So much complaining about the time frame! As if we ALL don't have other obligations during the month...

If it's not enough time then aim smaller. Make a goddamn month-sized map and shut your mouths. You don't have to make the next Minerva for fuck's sake.
Posted 14 years ago2010-11-27 20:41:02 UTC Post #287401
Blitz is right guys. We're keeping the time frame small to keep you all focused. Work to the limit, it can definitely bring out the best in your entry.

...At the rate I'm working, I'll be releasing at least 2x the maps in my entry than the last one. I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

Hello there,
I'm so glad the Competitions have been revived, I had joined just after the map a dream, and sorely regretted missing out on that one. I for one am quite pleased with this topic.

One possibly dumb question, could you clarify what you mean by no mod format? Does that mean no dedicated folder structure or selection on the Custom games menu (HL1 specifically)? I ask mainly because I generally do all my mapping with Spirit and it would make a big difference for me. Thanks!

Posted 14 years ago2010-11-28 14:56:44 UTC Post #287426
correct. No individual folder. No custom code (if u use spirit it will be deleted by judges)
Posted 14 years ago2010-11-28 17:15:31 UTC Post #287437
We've changed the rules slightly to allow mod formats (so you can have an individual folder), but you still cannot have custom code. No Spirit, sorry.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. Still looking forward to this one however :)

Wait, so Mod format is okay now?
Score! I'm going to use this opportunity to practice making loading screens and menu maps, in that case.

Lol mod format has been the most confusing topic over the last many competitions.
Posted 14 years ago2010-11-28 23:26:08 UTC Post #287456
If no mod format was allowed, how would you add custom weapon models and custom models in general?

  • Your entry must NOT be in mod format. If you have custom content, the
content should be zipped in the APPROPRIATE FOLDER STRUCTURE.

It means only add the content that is needed, not your whole mod. And if you do then put it in the folders they need to be in and zip it up.

Simple actually....

pakscape.
Posted 14 years ago2010-11-29 08:34:18 UTC Post #287464
Or you could include it like a normal map using custom content, but in a lot of cases for something like this, the models/materials would replace the game ones.

I've realised that all the great entries I thought of require multitudes of NPCs and therefore are not possible in either engine.

I really should try to come up with other kinds of historical events.
Posted 14 years ago2010-12-01 01:56:03 UTC Post #287512
Just worry about that once you even have anything to put in such a format.
Posted 14 years ago2010-12-01 05:05:17 UTC Post #287513
So I'm making this map for Cs 1.6, I plan to make it story less due to the fact that much time is not displayed for this, but then again it works well this way, because what I am making, is the invasion of bay of pigs, so a Terrorist vs Counter-terrorist situation plays out nicely there.

'historical' is a pretty broad term so we'll limit it to stuff before 1990
boy that really narrows it down, doesn't it? All the significant stuff in the world has happenned in the last 20 years.

Question: by "historical video game context", you mean a video game reproduction of a historical location, meaning that the entry would be a video game reproduction of a video game reproduction of a historical location, right? Or am I getting it wrong?
Posted 14 years ago2010-12-01 23:51:17 UTC Post #287539
You're getting it wrong. It means that you may choose to represent a game that was released before 1990. For example, you may want to do Super Mario Bros. in the Source engine or something.

Well seems I don't have time to enter this one with the sem. coming to an end. Don't like the theme anyway. Good luck to the rest of you!

Edit: I'm sure theres great ideas out there, history holds, well... Everything that makes today what it is.

"I've realized that all the great entries I thought of require multitudes of NPCs and therefore are not possible in either engine." - discostu

Maybe we should clarify the parameters a little better. Are we making a working level with NPC's, etc. or are we just making architecture?

I was under the impression that more of the focus should be put on the map itself and not necessarily a whole working level. I could be wrong...

I think the idea and the actual brush architecture are the most important. Technically, to me, it could be void of NPCS all together.

Not that you couldn't...I just don't think it should be judged on that.
Posted 14 years ago2010-12-02 11:16:05 UTC Post #287550
It's up to you kdunivan. You can focus on a place, an event, a creation of the time... whatever. They'll each be judged accordingly.

Think like this. Every aspect of a competition entry matters. The architecture and level itself matters the most but the ambience, lighting, story, reasons make it that much better.

Edit: Maybe I could use this as an opportunity to recreate a piece of architecture. Hmm will it fit into my schedule?

teaser from me.

I'll give you a hint.
It's something incredibly historical, played out within the HL universe.

If anyone guesses which historical character is played by the elite, well, you're a genius.

On a side note, it's incredibly difficult to script those guys.
hah.. figured it out. It's cake now.

Well, shit. There go my chances of winning.
Which is to say, it looks fantastic. Though I'd replace the wall texture with something a little... less combine and metallic.

not so much historic on its own, but it is an iconic area of an area in its current state due to perhaps one of the biggest historical events in recent history.

who knows if i'll bother to finish it, or even if i'll ever open it again. laziness is a huge factor here.

Pripyat, I believe. Looks good.

Tetsu0's has me thinking of an assassination, for some reason.

It's the famous gym pool in Pripyat. You can play COD4 or STALKER to see it (unless you... you know... just look up pictures of the real thing).

i remember seeing that in COD4, there were some dogs down there. Then later those dogs helped me kill some enemies

I hope the judged won't be really strict on these. I'm making a cs map of the invasion of bay of pigs, I'm using modern day pictures of the area to help me map something according to the theme. I have the right trees and textures here, but of course there is no way I could map the place accurately and to what it might have looked like 50 years ago, unless I was there, so I hope it's alright if I map a cuban shore-like environment with some destroyed buildings and slap the name "bay of pigs" on top of it.

skals that should be fine, creative liberties are both necessary and good.

mine, for example, is an actual historical place set in a fictional alternate near-future :P not that it'll take a trophy anyways, i'm playing too many games on my new rig >.>
