I think we could come up with something clever that TWHL can still stand for. I'm with Soup, I really think we should keep the name.

Even if it stands for nothing, keep it TWHL. I feel like you're losing out on the history with a name change.

The Withering Here Lies?

You're forgetting that the TWHL part is what's presenting the problem, not the meaning of the acronym.

Oh I know. My wit has been doing it's damnedest, and there's not a whole lot of options.

Just make it TWHL, standing for nothing.

As I mentioned, it's not really an option to call it TWHL because there's no domain names we can use.

I'm with PB: we need something memorable and relatively short. Something that's catchy and easy to remember, particularly with regards to the domain. Again, look at Rust as a good example: easy to remember without shoehorning it into something specific.

twhl.info and twhl.eu are also available
There are also .se, .nu, .me, .biz, .tv, .dk, .be, .pl, .cc, .org.uk and probably a whole bunch of other TLDs without a "twhl" domain.

We would like to expand the games the website focuses on. This means that we kinda want to drop the whole explicit 'Half-Life' in the site name. Also, I would prefer a first-class TLD like .org, .net, or .com. They're much nicer and appear more 'professional'. I think that even to this day potential new users are scared off by the .co.za in the current domain.

Idk I think changing the site's name is a mistake.

I don't think it much matters if u want to represent other engines and games, since. Whenever I think of twhl, I'm not thinking "the whole half-life," but just a great community and level design site.

As far as having a .com, .org, or. net attached, I think is largely unimportant these days, at least for a site like this. I only pay attention to premium names if it's like a bank's site or something where I will be entering personal/financial info

Who suggested this? I didn't see it anywhere.
With that said it sounds dumb, if we keep half-life in the name, we need to take out the "whole" and plus when saying acronyms, W's don't roll of the tongue. BOO.

But I do think catering to other games and engines would be better suited with a site not mentioning half-life or such.

Hmm... Dunno... Of course, there is an easy test.
A sentence like:
"I found this tutorial over at Polycount." just flows off the tongue.
Same with
"I posted about my vtf problem on Interlopers."

"I found this map over at Worldmakers." It doesn't seem as nice.

What makes "The Whole Half-Life" such a good name is the fact that it matches well with the subtle physics puns that were used in Half-Life, such as the chapter headings (e.g. "Surface Tension").

I do like the idea of "MapVault." It does preserve an aspect of TWHL, the only thing about it is that it seems a little too specific, and by default not generic enough.

As of this moment I can only think of a few, and most of them are just variants of each other. They aren't particularly good and probably unappealing in that they include some generic terms. I've annotated the ones that I sort of like and aren't terrible.

[Science/Pun]

Ground-State

Ground-State Game Editing (GSGE)

Ground-State Game Modification (GSGM)

Ground-State Level Design (GSLD) This is O.K.

[Roots lie in HL to preserve history, not indicative of HL]

The Lambda Map Bunker (TLMB)

Lambda Level Design Collective (LLDC)

Lambda Level Design Reactor (LLDR) I kind of like this one.

The Level Design Collective (TLDC)

The Level Design Reactor (TLDR) harr harr, and this one

Why are we so intent on coming up with new titles for TWHL?
Just because twhl.com is taken doesn't mean we have to change the name of the whole community, just the URL. "Map Vault" and "The Grid" sound great and everything, but the TWHL title is really a lot more than just a title to me.

Maybe I'm just being a grumpy old man, but I've been here since late 2003 and the actual title of this community has a special place in my heart. If it absolutely must be changed, I'd strongly encourage the admins to keep the idea of playing on the Half Life name as a fraction in mind. EG: 2Half, HalfSquared, etc.

As we've said countless times already, keeping the name Half-Life related and then branching into other makes no sense. We're trying to build the community, not keep everything small-scale and sentimental.

As well as this (not that this has a massive bearing), in a purely legal matter, we do not own the name TWHL. This is atom's brand and IP and it's not ours to simply do as we wish with it.
