Restart Steam and play.
Discuss first impressions and whatnot here.

Just read that TF2-esque microtransactions made it into the co-op campaign.

Ew, Valve, ew.

Yeah, I love sticking TF2 hats on my aperture science drone and buying gestures for 2$ a piece, but... Isn't valve known for FREE dlc? And shouldn't TF2 stuff, stay in TF2, I mean, just simply recycling it all seems a bit cheap to me.

Can I at least spend 2$ on something remotely useful like a upgraded weapon, or a new map at least? I mean, paying up 2$ to wave at my buddy doesn't seem very sensible or logical.

Remember to keep TWHL spoiler-free. This means that you cannot talk about the plot elements of Portal 2 AT ALL. This also includes gameplay screenshots, links to youtube videos (without a big spoiler notice), and so on. This is a bannable offense, you will not get any warnings besides this one.

@Crollo: Then DON'T pay $2. It's not like you have to. If anything it'd be worse to offer better weapons for cash, then people who didn't want to pay would be at a disadvantage.

And what about say, first impressions or such?
I don't own it and I personally also would appreciate it if it could be without some fucktard spoiling the finale, but just wondering exactly how far that goes.

Impressions are fine as long as they don't contain spoilers of any sort. Stuff like (previously unknown) gameplay elements and maps are off-limits, and obviously you cannot talk about story elements.

I restart Steam and nothing out of the ordinary happens that allows me to play. Do I have to buy the game first?

You're right, I hadn't really thought about that, I still am disappointed as to the thought of 'extra' gestures which you have to pay for though, but whatever, let the people with the money enjoy the extra novelty items, so long as they don't hinder those who can't afford them.

It does feel incredibly cheap having to buy animations and hats. I know you don't have to, and I don't intend to, but it's still a disappointing move from Valve. Ah well.
I want to read some impressions about the updated engine(is it still source?).
Yes, I don't think Valve will move on from Source anytime soon.

Stuck at work for the next two and a half hours. Balls.

So as for the engine, it is modified, but not a new engine. There is NOT dynamic light, but some very, very cleaver use of projected textures.

All in all, id say its worth a play. Just try to rewind your mind before this whole potatoe/ARG fiasco, reduce the hype, and play the game you fell in love with years ago.

It is visually stunning, as for gameplay... I'll let you decide. It doesn't seem as difficult as Portal, but then again, I am only to chapter 5.

But source supports dynamic lighting :. Lazy asses from valve didn't perform any optimizations on that? :o

Haven't stopped grinning 4 hours in. The plot, humour and character development are nothing short of what I'd expect from Valve.

The engine is nice, runs smoothly and has some incredible visuals. Way to many loading screens but they only last 3 seconds or so. No biggy.

I for one have stopped getting hyped up about games anymore, I learned from HL2 on that front. Waited 3 years after seeing a demo and the final result was a bit shite. I just pre-ordered Portal 2 and watched the trailers. None of this ARG crap or whatever.

The mini-transactions thing is a bit crappy but then again that's exactly why I hate TF2 now. I won't be purchasing anything extra like hats and animations because there is simply no need for it.

tl:dr; Portal 2 is awesome.

The plot has really picked up where I am. Aperture Labs has a lot of history. Good stuff :walter:
To be honest, I really don't like working with that white portal gel, though.

I sat down with Portal 2 and a mug of coffee. I forgot to take a single sip. I played for six hours, some single player and about half of the co-op. So good.
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-20 17:58:32 UTC Post #293744
So I am not the only one who finds himself staring at the shadows on the wall like a befuddled idiot.

And the ceilings . . . don't forget to look up. The ceilings are so much more interesting than the sterile and flat ceilings of the original Portal.

Once again, incredibly beautiful levels.

This is me standing as close as I can to a wall and zooming in on it. How the hell the textures are so sharp is beyond me, but this is literally the only texture in the game that's this sharp.

SPOILER ALERT
[i]Censored.

Dimbark has been banned for ignoring the 'no spoilers' warning. DO NOT POST SPOILERS OF ANY KIND, EVEN IF YOU MARK IT AS A SPOILER. You are, however allowed to link to screenshots (NOT EMBEDDED) or videos as long as you very clearly state that they contain spoilers. It's best not to post them at all.

I'm assuming spoilers that are marked by strikes are fair game, ya?
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-21 04:02:48 UTC Post #293757
For them to be fair game, I'd say you'd have to add several spacings of some form so that you can't go on to read the spoiler while you're brain is still processing the previous line which would probably say "!!SPOILER WARNINGS!!", and then the strikeout would make it so you can't 'accidentally' read the spoilers for say, skimming the page to see if you missed any new posts, but that's all up to PB to decide.

Or maybe PB could just code in a 'only visible highlighted' text color, or [hide] tag and that would work too.

Seriously, how difficult is this to understand?
Penguinboy PenguinboyHaha, I died again!
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-21 06:01:24 UTC Post #293764
Very.

I'm sorry that you don't trust anyone's better judgement when it comes to determining what is and isn't a spoiler. I'm also sorry that you don't trust people who see clearly marked/hidden spoilers to not read them.
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-21 06:13:28 UTC Post #293766
Spoilers posted in plain text are very difficult to avoid even if they are marked as spoilers. It's far better to keep TWHL completely spoiler-free so people do not have to avoid the site before they finish the game.

Obviously you are able to discuss the game, and gameplay that had already previously been revealed in trailers is fine to discuss. And if it's not a spoiler, of course you can talk about it. I don't understand how "anyone's better judgement" comes into it. Just don't post spoilers.

The ban on spoilers will be lifted after, say, two weeks. That's enough time to ensure that most people who care will have finished the game.

Posted 13 years ago2011-04-21 06:30:19 UTC Post #293767
Then clear this up, because it sounds a lot more strict than you're letting on now:
This means that you cannot talk about the plot elements of Portal 2 AT ALL. This also includes gameplay screenshots, links to youtube videos (without a big spoiler notice), and so on. This is a bannable offense, you will not get any warnings besides this one.
I'm especially concerned with what constitutes a spoiler in your eyes with regards to screenshots. I'd be afraid to post anything at all, because a screenshot showing anything from the game might be considered a spoiler to you based on what you said earlier.

Edit: Fuck it. It's late, I'm tired, this shouldn't even be happening.
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-21 06:52:11 UTC Post #293768
Soup Miner, you're a privileged forum member. Nobody is going to ban you :P.

And what's all this fight about? I think you can freely post about characters, the world you explore, engine, etc. As long as you don't make any references to the plot(ok, small ones, but just not do it directly as Dimbark did).

Got up at 5 o'clock in the morning two days ago to get it literally the second it came out. All I can say about the story is holy fucking god it's good..As in Portal 1 , this game has an amazing ( if not better) amount of humour in it.

I'm really interested in the map making side of P2 now as I've literally stopped myself from playing CO-OP anymore as I'll just waste time. There's a new entity which.. well , ever heard of warp zones in Unreal? It's pretty much them.
