Try to ALWAYS keep your head on a swivel. if the attacker get the jump on you, you won't get a chance to pull your side arm. =(
A friend of a friend of mine got jumped from behind. they bashed his head in so bad, he now is saddled with permanent brain damage and physical disabilites from the attack, for life. I don't really know him but i've seen him a couple times. he is really fucked up. =(
if you're carring i'd also recommend a small hammerless 38 or sum such for a backup(usually an ankle holster) Once you wear them for a while you don't even notice.

And I guess you could bring pepper spray to a gun fight, if you prefer that method...
@luke, that was my plan. I'm 22 now and haven't gotten my own pistol yet but revolvers are a nice choice because of their lack of jamming and simplicity. Also they look sweet. I'd recommend atleast an eight shot though.

I seriously don't get why you're getting a firearm.
Recieving professional SD training is not a substitution for having a firearm as protection, but having a firearm as protection doesn't substitute for professional SD training. If you seriously think you can 'figure out' on your own what proper training can do, then by all means go ahead mister NSA agent. I'd love to watch you fail and get shot, because that's what happens to idiots who think they can train themselves the same as somebody who's trained their entire life every day all day by a instructor who actually knows what he's doing.
If you're receiving professional training on how to point a gun at a target then that's all you're doing. You're just building your ability to bring up your sights and fire. That's it.
Also your supposed friend who knew karate is a complete idiot, here's to hoping he got the arrogance and ignorance beaten out of him.

i dont know about you, but i doubt i could/would actually shoot someone if i ended up carrying a gun or needing to use it to defend myself or whateve
you guys play way too many computer games with guns in them
in any case, in Australia the only real firearms a citizen can hold is like, single shot rifles and shotgun and you need like a full licence and police check, reason to own one etc etc.
even then, shops arnt allowed to sell flick knifes, knuckle dusters (or weapons like that).
therefore if your in a part of town where you feel like you may be in danger one night, or whatever, then you're simply told to "get over it". incidentally the ammount of assualts arnt very high (unless you live in sydney or melbourne where people allways get knifed at train stations)

Why not just get a taser gun? I believe they can be purchased in the US, and they aren't considered a firearm, so no need for all the licensing stuff. Although I suppose that would vary from state to state.

At least swords were a fair fight. If you had some skill and experience, you could defend yourself fairly confidently. I can't imagine any situation where you'd feel safe at all when someone pulls a gun on you.

Tazer is a decent idea too. Either way i'm buying the gun just to have at home.
This things smaller than my cell phone and carries 6 .380 bullets. They're almost the size of 9mm's. And I can get this gun for $300.
Compared it in the store to the taurus tcp and fell in love with the ruger. People made it's trigger pull look too hard on youtube but it was very easy and much nicer than the taurus'.
