Well, the camera wasn't in-store even though it should have been [The website listed the product as available in the local store's stock], so I instead just got what was next down on my priority list: HD Camcorder.

The video quality it shoots is quite great for a sub-150$ camera, but unfortunately if I want some good shallow DOF, I'll have to shell out over 600$ for one of the DSLRs they had in stock. I do not have over 600$.

It probably doesn't look too great as a individual screengrab due to some slight compression, but at 30 frames per second, the quality is pretty nice.
Plus, it's got 60fps 720p capabilities for some fun slowmotion videos.

I expect you to make some films now, and not post images with that camera. Because if you bought it for that, I have nothing left to say...

Yeah camcorders are not good for photography at all, they have very poor [if at any] manual controls for settings, this one fortunately has a ring on the lens that allows for some relatively precise focus [Being 'normal' and 'macro'] so it's still pretty useful for video.

Also, are you seriously suggesting that I would ever have a camcorder with slow motion capabilities, and WOULDN'T use it? Don't speak such blasphemy!

How did you get that from anything Striker said?

I was not referring to the slow motion, I was referring to the camcorder as a whole. A camcorder's main function being video I'd have assumed that whoever reads it would come to the conclusion that I was referring to the video, and not the camcorders capability to shoot video and take images. As Striker stated that he hoped that I'd be shooting video and that I shouldn't buy it just for taking images.

Just because I said it has slow motion capabilities does not mean I am suddenly referring to the slow motion capability from that point on. Moreover I would not refer to slow motion capabilities as "It", don't you think it would be odd if i did?

My comprehensive skills are not at fault here, it is either your poor reading of my writing, or my poor wording.

EDIT:

The cd one is ok(I like the half-reflection), but I don't like the motorcycle one. It just doesn't look right in contre-jour, and it appears that there's a flare on the lens.

What is that, exactly? Or rather, what was it originally? Because I can tell it now is a macro adapter. And how did you attach it?
Posted 13 years ago2011-08-06 05:27:55 UTC Post #297466
It's the lenses from a pair of binoculars I've macgyvered into a usable macro lens suitable for pretty much anything that it can fit over. For attaching you don't really 'attach' it at all, you can tape it to the lens [Not recommended] or just hold it in place, which is a lot more convenient then taping it and removing the tape every shot.

It was never my intention to make a macro lens actually, I made it by accident.

Although, if you saw it [attached] while the Kodak had it's real lens extended, you'd probably think it's a zoom lens attachment and not a macro attachment. :P

Crollo, I appreciate your work and all but... I think you bought a good camera for filming and you're mostly shooting photos with it, which is quite wrong.

Also a good enough tripod is around 35$.

I intend to shoot some more videos but first I have to get off my ass and find something worth shooting instead of small test films.
When school kicks back in would probably be a good time to start, for now all I'm doing is dicking around with the camera because I don't fully know how to use it, what it operates best in. Right now I'm only just getting into the world of video but I've been doing small photography for a good while now so I don't have to 'experiment' beyond the basics because I've already done much of it before already.

Also while it's alright if you feed it good settings and conditions, I'm still finding myself disappointed and annoyed by some of it's letdowns, Full HD 1080p seems to be as Archie stated, upscaled 720p and what's more is that it's cropped down, effectively rendering the pretty decent wide angle lense to a claustrophobic zoomed-in image unless you intend to be at a distance from what you're shooting, and the low lighting is pretty bad, getting noisy and unusable if it get's too dark, but is worked around relatively easily. Overall it's okay for vblogging and some small filmography, but I wouldn't consider it the most ideal camera for filming. I mostly got it because this kind of camcorder would have been great to have with me when I went out to mount Washington, could have shot some good footage there, not so much for actually doing some films or such, but I'm trying to make something soon.

Also on the subject of cropping: I've heard the RED EPIC also follows this bizarre method of shooting 1080p. Why the hell do cameras do this? I would use 1080p but the cropping makes it completely unusable.

EDIT: Actually I've just attempted to upscale 720p footage to 1080p then compared it to 1080p footage and the 1080p footage is in fact a lot sharper then just upscaling. Still, not the most sharp.

Crollo, if a $100 camera happened to be a "most ideal camera for filming", anyone wanting to take it seriously would be just wasting their money on one of these:
