Is there a better way to put this thing onto grid, except to go 1 by 1 piece?

haha awesome mecha! Ok a couple things:

Is this something you built or downloaded? (pm me link to rmf and i can give you more-detailed evaluation)

I wouldn't worry about things being off-grid, but you can always try selecting the item and hit CTRL+B to "snap to grid".

You can prevent hammer snapping your geometry to gridpoints by using Jed Smith's HLfix. Even better, using Atom's Compilator, you can easily and quickly enable HLFix.

I would recommend ANYONE who maps for goldsource to use Compilator and Hlfix.

Yeah its very cool, i want to use it in my DE_ map...

Well, i tried to built one robot, it looked very very crappy, than i searched the net and found this, i have sent you a PM with the 7z archive.

Yeah, well actually, the error was in me moving the whole thing off grid, than i fixed that, but it also had some very very bad cylinders which i also fixed, plus i fixed some inside stuff and added a door opening mechanism.

But it still has work to be done.

Thanks fore reminding me about CTRL+B :D
And yeah, compilator + hlfix = ownage.

the upper arm cylinder was giving that nasty "brush ouside world" error, and i basically func_walled the whole thing by groups.

If you want shadow--and why woudn't you!--, place a few simplified and nulled worldbrushes around the arms, legs, missle launchers, and torso to approximate shape for vrad.

Thanks a lot Captain T! And thanks for all that neat stuff as well!

Especially thanks for showing me the shadow-works

You rock :o

Slightly off topic, but:

Here's the original design of that robot.

Heck ya! I would havequit mapping goldsrc ages ago if not for hlfix... seriously.

Func_illusionary superb too, or lately ill just throw a clip brush over it, which yields same result afaik, in terms of performance and compile time? (I wonder if the lighting would look better or different either way?)

I use illusionaries for lights and such on the walls... also REALLY complex stuff that i just put clip brushes beneath.
