So considering half of my Steam friends list is at any given time playing Skyrim, I assume some of you will have it.
What do you think so far? Do you have any cool stories & screenies to share? Try to keep spoilers to a minimum!

Because I'm on really long-day shoots all this week I've barely had a chance to play it, but the intro was pretty rubbish which is especially disappointing considering how spot-on they got Fallout 3's.

Urby assures me that it gets much, much better once you leave the tunnels so I'll definitely keep playing.

The absolute worst part of it is the interface, though. It's atrociously bad. Clearly designed with consoles in mind over PCs and I eagerly await a mod to fix it.

So far very disappointing, but I can't wait to get into it properly.

Are there any kind of competitions featuring a game prize with Skyrim yet? Because I saw videos on youtube with it, and it looks absolutely gorgeous.
I can't afford it though.(although I do think this is a good thing, this year I should be busy studying, not playing :D)

I jizzed myself at the bit after the first dragon kill. Having a lot of fun so far. Amazing grafix, stunning environments (the best I've seen in any game so far), great fun and immersing game-play, a lot of character build choices.

Why does there have to be entire threads/journal posts, and soon to be news posts dedicated to it, is it really that special? This very easily could be a journal post or could just go into the gaming thread, but whatever.

Why does there have to be an entire thread about Minecraft?

The thing with games like Fallout / The Elder Scrolls is the freedom element. Your character is unique in that you level up the skills you use most. I'm playing as an archer and sneaking around a lot and through continued practice I can now pretty much snipe anything and get a 1 hit kill.

There is also the crafting side of things. I'm currently wearing some leather armour which I have kept working on to the point where it is now tougher than some of the steel stuff I come across. The best part is, it is entirely my work. I killed a sabre-tooth tiger and skinned it's hide, I turned the hide to leather in the next village and then crafted some armour. Whenever I get a new hide, I reinforce it. :)

In other news, I am a huge nerd and I love it. :D

I hate to say it but, I have the same opinion on it as Dimbark but a slight difference, I really have no interest in the game whatsoever.

Not really, these games are fairly standalone. I'd imagine you won't get some of the lore and references, but there's not really a continous story being told with each game.

I'll give it a shot when it's cheap, but if it's anything like Oblivion and Fallout 3, I probably wouldn't enjoy it. Those RPGs are way too aimless and clumsy for me. Infinite freedom just means infinite distractions instead of an engaging, well-paced adventure.

Yeah, the begining wasn't particularly stellar, but once you get out into the open world and are in your first town, it really picks up pace quickly.
As for me, I'm pretty much going for every sidequest I can find. I'm a glutton for the stuff.

@Dimbark: Not really. I never played any Elder Scrolls games prior to Oblivion and I can't say I missed much of the story. Surely there must have been a few references here and there that I didn't know about, but no experience killers. Could have been the same without them.

The biggest issue is that the game explains absolutely NOTHING to you about how anything works.

What a coincidence. Me too.
About to leave Whiteridge after getting a bodyguard. Not very far in, but I'm definitely enjoying it. Can't wait to see what the rest of the world has to offer.
The interface is a bit different, but I'm starting to adjust to it. FO3's pip-boy was much simpler to use.
EDIT: It's significantly harder to go on a murderous rampage in Skyrim than the Fallout titles. This is likely a good thing. Unless you seriously want your character to go on a murderous rampage for keeps. Bethesda seems to have taken themselves more seriously as well, but fortunately not 100%. The end of one of the Lockpick skill books in particular made be laugh my arse off. The one thing the game is missing is the ability to pick things up. Once I get a house, I foresee having difficulty decorating it with random books and items. Also I have to shout to get corpses to fall off bridges.
Now for some less review-y text: So far interesting things I have seen:
*The ethereal form of the Headless horseman. I swear it's true. I would have caught him too, if I hadn't gotten attacked by a wolf.
*A speaking statue.
*A flying horse with a rider. 95% sure it was a glitch.
*Ridiculously overpowered giants. I can kill a freaking dragon with no problem, but two hits from a monster under half the size with no fire kills me and sends me flying literally into the stratosphere.
*Hours of fun

Criken's videos of Fallout 3, New Vegas and now Skyrim show the more glitchy elements of the games. You can watch it here.

I personally find it very entertaining more than anything else.

Archie: Thanks. I'll try that next time I play.
Skyrim has Aurora Borealis. It's almost as good as the real thing, but with a smaller range of colours and movement. I urge you guys to look up at the sky during night in the frigid northern half of the map.

It's pretty cool so far. It's basically Oblivion but better at this point, and that's all I really wanted.

The interfaces are so counter intuitive it's ridiculous, though. It's clearly geared toward consoles. It sucks, but oh well.

Combat is fucking awesome, as well.

And the sounds are astonishing. Most of the time it sounds like you're literally there. That's with the quality, the ambiance, and the effects of certain rooms (echos, etc).

I agree with trapt, I kept expecting them to start explaining how to use all the new features, but it never happened. Like I stumbled upon the magic panel by mistake, and I still have no idea how to enchant items.

Overall it's fun so far, problem is I'm way too lazy to do any side-quests.
Posted 13 years ago2011-11-15 14:12:31 UTC Post #300783
Yep the interface is great on consoles...which is what I'm playing it on.

Although the trade off is the PS3 version has a memory leak problem so long hours = crappy framerate.

Anyway I have a story.

I was doing one of the companion quests and had an NPC with me. As I approached the area I noticed a Dwemer structure in a mountain. I went inside and was greeted with a Khajiit skooma addict. As I went further and further in I discovered a huge hollowed out mountain with Dwemer structures winding down and down and down a spiral staircase.

I was intrigued because the journals mentioned treasure. I must have been in there for a good hour. By the end I had to fight two giant centurions and then there were two imperials who were fighting over the treasure.

Anyway to my surprise it was another one of those "You lack the item" altars so I'm going to get that item today and discover the treasure. Can't wait.

You're missing out on mods by playing it on the PS3, Habboi. Foolish mistake! I can't imagine I'd have played 200 hours of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: NV if it wasn't for mods making them endlessly replayable.

Hunter I keep telling you mah PC is freezing all the time. I need money for a new one.

Besides even if it wasn't I'd stick with the console version. I'm sorry but a 40 " TV, 5.1 surround sound (properly placed around the room unlike my PC speakers) and a comfy sofa is too strong a decision for me. Besides everyone is moaning about the interface but it's incredibly handy with a controller.

I never really used the mods anyway. The only Oblivion mod I used was the one that added exterior meshes to indoor sections and that was a "pain" to install. Using python scripts and plugins to even get it working...what a nightmare.

For about 650€-700€, you can make a very good rig for gaming that would include the Sandy Bridge Core i5 2500k and an AMD Radeon HD6850.

That's what "I'm after" right now, without any money( just dreaming about this configuration...). Imo, even if I had the money, it wouldn't worth it since my pc runs pretty well a lot of new games. The new Ivy Bridge will appear next year anyway, using the tri-gate(3D transistors) technology that will bring a big energy efficiency and performance boost.

[Spoilers]

I've just wrapped up the Dark Brotherhood questline. Very fun, except for when I had to rush back to the sanctuary after the betrayal. I arrived outside to find several Pentalus Oculatus agents who attacked me and the ghost of LaChance, then their horses suddenly started attacking me, probably caused by a stray arrow of mine, then some stupid Spriggan, and then a Dragon dropped in and started burning shit up. What was supposed to be a simple surprise attack on some agents turned into a battle royale.

It was the most hectic and funniest fight I'd ever been in, if very difficult. Fucking Dragons.

[/Spoilers]
That mod would be such a tease if it increased the breasts of the men and not the women.
That would be the most epically hilarious thing ever.

Decided to try my hand at enchanting items tonight. Took apart my Imperial Bow of Burning to learn how to make things do fire damage, then enchanted my more powerful (and upgraded) ebony bow. The way I did it it only does 1 extra point of fire damage, (I assume it's ongoing, haven't tested yet) but it'll do that extra point for over a thousand uses.
I might enchant my sword when I get a chance, too.

I finally got my blacksmithing up to 100 so I made dragon armour and was annoyed at the fact that I can't choose daedra until I unlock the weaker armour perks. So lame.

Also I'm loving the hand made dungeons. Found another one with a necromancer who would kidnap women and turn them into his ghost slaves.

Oh yeah and I can't equip my legendary glass maces in the quick menu as the game seems to get confused whether they are the same or separate. If I equip to right it hides the other one so I have to manually equip it >_>

Warning: The following post contains spoilers, if not explicitly stated.
I went to bed one (ingame) night in my home, and woke up to a rather lovely lady sitting on a cupboard in a blood-covered shack. She informed me that I had infringed on one of her jobs, and for compensation, I would not be able to leave the shack until I killed someone. She laid three potential victims in front of me, and told me to go ahead.

As it turned out, she had really nice enchanted gear.

I also attended a rather nice party where I saw a few familiar faces. Luckily, one of them owed me a favor from when I saved her town from vampires, and I was able to slip away and get some food from the kitchens. As well as a few interesting books and some sword wounds.

(Okay, I did kill one of them, but that was me going back to a previous save to see if I could solve the puzzle. I didn't want to join the DB, at least not in this playthrough.)
As for the party, that's part of the main storyline.
