Remember when I had to uninstall half life and wipe out my entire mod collection on steam after some update or another? Turns out that steam is the reason for causing the blue screen I mentioned as well. Even after switching computers, steam once again fugged up the computer and caused a blue screen, on a different, brand new computer. If valve is not gonna shit out an update pronto within the next 3 days, expect steam to be wiped off this computer permanently.

I think you're doing something wrong.

I've used steam for 9 years and I've never had it Bsod me running on a wide variety of hardware configurations over the years.
Hell, I don't think it's crash at all for about 4 years let alone a Bsod.

Anyhoo your loss if you choose to remove Steam for not patching an issue that no other Steam user is experiencing. Not a single mention of Bsods on their forums and google results are more game and hardware related bsods than Steam.

Try sending something to Steam support. It's a place you can confess without facing judgement.

What do you mean "wipe out"? you could have backed them up and pasted them to your new steam install no problem.

Also, i'm seriously doubting the problem you're having is valve's fault, just my opinion.

I 'wiped out' my mod collection on this computer (hereby known as Computer A), meaning that I have relocated it entirely to another, brand new computer (computer B). Before the update, I never had problems with HL1 on steam. However, after this update, Computer A crashes with a Blue Screen, and HL1 and all mods do not work as described in the journal entry. Then I relocate everything to the brand new computer (Computer B), and, under the same circumstances, crashes with the Blue Screen. --> This is a brand new comp, mind you, so there is no other reason for it to have a blue screen.

Valve has in the past released unstable updates on steam. I'm just hoping that this will be fixed ASAP.

I'm sure you've already mentioned it somewhere and i'm also afraid to ask, but what os are you running? specs on both machines also?

Computer A: crappy laptop that can barely handle TF2. (Win 7)

Saying you 'wiped out' your mod collection when you in fact just moved it is very misleading.

Did computer B run HL1 successfully before you added the mods to the HL directory?

I didn't run HL1 with computer B yet, but this thread was referring to the blue screen having occurred in computer B, which made me kinda irritated.

Oh so it's not actually related to Goldsource, it's just Steam that is BSoDing? Right, that's very different. I thought the HL mods and Blue screens were related.

Ok, you really need to let us know the circumstances of the BSOD then. What are you doing when it happens? You haven't actually described it at all, merely saying that it happens on both computers since the Steam update.

Incidentally, disabling the in-game overlay will allow Goldsource to function properly for the moment. It's a D3D issue relating to certain video card drivers.

I think the update caused both the blue screens and the breaking of the HL1 mods. Before the update, the crappy laptop can play HL1 and mods in D3d without problems. After this update, HL1 force quits as described in the journal and these blue screens start showing up (neither computer has ever had a blue screen before.) In both cases it was just after booting up from like a standby mode with steam running. Basically, about 10-20 seconds after booting up from standby, the blue screen appears.

Do they occur repeatedly? Every time after booting from standby? Have you tried running the PCs with steam off?

i will never use ati/amd products again for the months of my life i will never get back, dealing with hardware conflicts directly attributed to both ati gfx cards and amd chips back in the day.

I seriously doubt steam is causing the issue. I'm not a whiz when it comes to PC's and hardware but if it's BSoDing it is more likely a hardware issue. My new PC is a beast, though it has thrown the BSoD in my face a couple of times and it came down to the second NVidia card overheating.

Like Archie said, try running the PC without Steam. Fire it up in safe mode and mess with the settings (like which programs launch with windows).

It is an issue with Steam actually. And Valve just pumped out an update today.

Lately steam has been freezing for me, when it never has been before. Not bsoding but definitely noticing some hiccups with some recent update.

You could probably say it isn't Steam but the game itself.
I close CSS, and most of the time steam freezes, I look in task manager and hl2.exe and gameoverlayui.exe are still running but at this point steam is frozen even if I end the processes, so I'm forced to restart steam.
I still say it's related to steam, perhaps the ingame overlay is fucked up.

Try disabling the in-game overlay. It has been know to cause problems, especially with non-source games.

EDIT: Speaking of which, Steam just released a patch:
