Our 1st community challenge, let's see if you have what it takes to get your work in game.
User posted image
Please post your WIP here or on the forums you are from. All voting will be tallied up and displayed in all threads. If you have a question be sure to ask, failure for knowing the rules and requirements are on you!

Let your limits be your imagination. Any kind of melee; knife, machete, axe, pipe, dog leg? Whatever you think.

Keep in mind the weapons we have make sense mechanically. No useless gears or gadgets will make the cut.

Good luck!

Questions
  • where can we view the current weapons for the game?
  • can we submit more than one weapon?

I haven't modeled anything yet, but here is some quick WIP i sketched in ps a couple days ago, all based on common gas pipe:

I realize they need more styling/flare to match the eloquence of your current weapons, these are only the bare base ideas ;)

Went to home depot today, and spent a little time with off-the-shelf gas pipe fittings to build my pipe saber:

User posted image

It is surprisingly well balanced, and doesn't feel too heavy despite it's looks. I was kinda aiming for a civil war saber, in pipe, tho this definitely needs some refined styling and some brass/wood added to match your theme.

I wanted to build some variants like a club or hammer, but i was starting to get some funny looks using the gas fittings like legos(LOL), so i got out of there. All told, about $50 for all the fittings.

The pipe saber also doubles as a nicely balanced walking stick/sheleighly:

Now, to model it, and play with some variations =)

Edit
Whoa those look great don punch =)

It could definitely use more styling up, but i'm running out of time, leaving everything to the last minute like i do.

I'll try to finish the brickhammer variation before the deadline!

I think that is awesome, but to be in the contest you need to go by the rules.

1024 textures: Diff, normal, spec

3k poly limit

If you can make that happen I'd love to see that in the contest!
Posted 11 years ago2012-07-16 00:57:57 UTC Post #307884
okay =)

what does 1024 textures mean? i'll propper it up now and get a poly count ;)
Captain Terror Captain Terrorwhen a man loves a woman
Posted 11 years ago2012-07-16 01:05:36 UTC Post #307885
resolution of the texture needs to be 1024x1024
Posted 11 years ago2012-07-16 09:57:09 UTC Post #307887
Well ok, here's what i was able to finish:

DOWNLOAD

It meets the texture requirement of one 1024x1024 texture, but i have no idea how many polies it would be. it's 1497 faces in hammer, but i know you said that doesn't translate)

Everything is included in the download. If it turns out not to be eligible i understand, and i had a blast working on it either way.

Thanks for hosting the competiton, 'twas fun :P

Edit
After the deadline, i was able to run it through propper, and i think i'm under the poly limit if i'm reading this correctly:

DOWNLOAD model/materials included with packbsp

Again, i understand completely if this is still not eligible. Cheers and good luck to all who entered ;)

If you are good at max and don't have to work today, i would say get something in soon as you can, and who knows, maybe he'll accept it?

I would have thought Rim would have entered this as well, he could have swept this easy i bet ;)

Voting is corrupt as shit, and we don't even have forum poll functionality here. You should judge the entries instead. Anyway, I'll vote Captain Terror.

Everyone seems to love that machete by Z3RO...

Is it just me who thinks that one is the worst?

Same, the machete by ZERO is nicely crafted and has some really quality textures, but design-wise it's really plain.

CT's pipe blade looks far more original IMO. :)

Agreed Urby/daubster.

I think people might NOT be voting for the Steamy Stabber because the design is just to weird for them, and they are picking Z3RO's machete as the next-best thing ;)

How is voting corrupt?
To put it simply, basically members from more popular sites will generate more votes for popular members of those websites.

How many times do you see people asking for people to vote for them without judgement, hell, Rimrook did it the other day!

But at the end of the day, it is your competition and your game, run it how you please.
Posted 11 years ago2012-07-17 21:49:21 UTC Post #307976
There are a ton of active members on these forums though.

Just like any election you have to get out and vote to make a difference.

I can't change the rules at the end of the compo either, that wouldnt be very good for anyone.

@Jeff: hey thanks man! =)

If you've any ideas to improve it, and/or make it more steampunk and less Mad Maxy, plx let me know, as i'll be redoing this in 3dsMax ;)
Captain Terror Captain Terrorwhen a man loves a woman
Posted 11 years ago2012-07-17 23:26:33 UTC Post #307986
actually you have it dead on, Mad Max fused with BioShock is the art style we have.

Practical steampunk instead of fantasy steampunk.
Posted 11 years ago2012-07-17 23:51:56 UTC Post #307988
CapT: The blade itself seems a bit too pristine, and a bit wide at the sharp end. Maybe a bit of rust and a few notches? The hilt is awesome, though. Maybe a couple of scratches or something on the texture to make it look a bit more weathered.

Also, I don't suppose you have a schematic and parts list for the real one you made, do you? I don't know when I'd get the time or money to build one, but I'd love to have one of those babies.

...Minus the blade, of course.

jeff it's very easy to make, and you could probably just take the image on your phone of the real one to home depot, and just put it together there. (cost about $50 with a mix of steel and galvanized pipe just for looks)

That said, i would be happy to write up a schematic for you if you still would like it ;)

Doubles as a home defense weapon, lol. That thing looks like it would weigh a fair bit when put together.
Posted 11 years ago2012-07-18 00:19:52 UTC Post #307991
you know blitz it does have some heft to it, but it's very balanced and swings around nicely. It would actually make a good real-life melee weapon imo, and man let me tell you if any part of your body got hit with this thing it would be shattered, cuz of that aforementioned weight/heft.

Jeff if you make one, maybe add some joint compound and/or teflon tape, again purely for looks ;)

Posted 11 years ago2012-07-18 00:26:58 UTC Post #307992
You could also add the appearance of rust by using a trick I picked up painting Warhammer 40k models. Use ink, not paint. INK.

Ink doesn't go on even and then dry, it stays liquid and fills cracks and clings to meeting edges, accents texture, and then dries there. The water's surface tension causes it to cling before it can dry.

Using a rust-colored ink, like Burnt Umber, creates stunningly realistic and totally harmless rust. Getting orange ink and red ink, and doing red first then orange second would probably look pretty damn realistic, because the orange would cling around the outside of the already dried red.
Posted 11 years ago2012-07-18 00:29:14 UTC Post #307993
Wow blitz that sounds like an amazing technique, ware do you by all the inks?

I've got the image, but if you wouldn't mind doing a schematic for those of us less mechanically-inclined, that'd be great.
Are you planning on 'copyrighting' the concept/design, or is it fair use? I can think of a couple of fictional-world applications off the top of my head.

I'd google map search for "art supply".

I think the blade design is pulling people away from it. But it has way more quality than zero's thing.

Voting for CT.

Alright, I get it. We have no poll functionality here, and you said they'd be tallied up from those threads when voting began.

I'll go see if I can dig up my 'Lopers account. Assuming I can remember the password.

Just to let everyone know, there will be more community challenges soon, and we have decided the next one will be voted on facebook via likes.

As far as facebook voting, i think it's a neat idea, but maybe also include voiting on the osirus page as an alternative for those facebook holdouts out there?
