LOL It's me again!

The problem I have is that whenever I play Half-Life in Single Player, at some point or the other it just crashes, with no error dialog whatsoever. It happens most often when changing maps.

What could be the problem?

If it's the official singleplayer levels then you might want to try reinstalling. Do you have any custom model packs or anything installed? Sometimes they can cause issues, though it hasn't happened to me for years now.

The only things that were installed on top of the Half-Life valve folder is a map.
I forgot to mention, but it happens more often after I save my game and later reload it.
I could get to the part where you launch the rocket/whatever (sorry, don't remember the chapter name) in one play without dying, and everything works fine (needless to say, this was in Easy mode). But if I save and reload even while on the first chapter, it crashes.

Any clue?

EDIT:
This does not happen ALWAYS, but quite often.

I would try reinstalling then. I'm not sure what could be causing that.

Dude, pirating games and software is looked down upon in this community. While some of us have used pirated copies of software in the past, most/if not all of us have bought half life. Especially since its dirt cheap and has been on sale for as low as $1.

maybe twhl needs a larger sticky to discourage the really dim ones searching for tech support of an illegal game.

And as mcrich alluded, why don't you appear more desperate, pirating a game you can own for few bucks, my god :aghast:

Yeah, whatever.

Anyway I have my reasons.

You said you did it once, and now you condemn me for doing it.

Sorry, but it sounds a bit hypocryte if you ask me.

I would take that as them saying they did it before, when they didn't have the means to play those games otherwise. The same can be said for me, I used a copy of a friend's WON HL disk for two to three years before I was given a copy of Steam HL by Archie as a prize.
Although it's entirely possible that kaeza doesn't have the means to purchase things over the internet, just as I didn't. I wouldn't consider that to be looked down upon.

Anyway, I don't have any help for you kaeza, apart from trying a reinstall.

Thank you very much for your understanding TJB.

Someone once said "If you don't have anything nice to say, better don't say anything at all".

I'll try a reinstall later, thanks again.

people pirate FREE mods, let alone 5 dollar games. Anyone trying to convince ppl not to pirate is a wasting their time.

How about no. Also, I facepalm not at the fact you've pirated it, but the fact you expect it to work properly.

I didn't say anything about your facepalm Scotch, but sorry if I did. I was saying about other users who stand by the motto "Do as I say and not as I do". You get the picture.

Anyway, we are wandering off-topic and I may have found the root of my problem: I installed a fresh copy of HL and compared it with the old one. As Urby suggested, there was indeed a model I didn't remember being there so I consider this topic solved.

Thanks.

I got the same crashes as before.

As I said on other thread, I run HL on Wine under Linux. I had no OpenGL support on my Linux distro, so I switched for one better supported, and voilá! Not only it doesn't crash anymore, now I have better graphics!!1!one!!

Thanks for the reply anyways platoon.

By parts of it, yes. Parts of this community also look down upon homosexuality or religion or the very idea of evolution. Not everyone will agree with you on any particular subject. Please try not to judge people.

The important thing that is that piracy is looked down upon by the admins and moderators. :P

@rufee Sorry, forgot to mention :P Ditched Windowze way too long ago ;)

@potatis_invalid The games I really, REALLY like, I have legitimately bought them. For the rest, I considered them a DEMO; just played for and hour or two after downloading. For HL, it's just that I had this friend of mine who had bought HL, and copied it from his HD to a CD for me. Also, whenever there's a good free alternative to a game (not necessarily Open Source), I ditch the commercial one. I like to support free software (though I think GPL is a cancer in the a$$).

Linux has gotten pretty good over the last years in terms of general usability even better now that steam is on the way. I would switch myself probably, but it doesnt cut it for me just yet. I have a linux distro for playing around though.

What about GPL ? Doesnt it say that you have to give credit to the original author ?

What I mean is that by using GPL'ed software in your own soft makes it also GPL. IMHO that is not freedom.

I mean, if you don't want to disclose your sources, fine with me, but don't force your users to do so. At least DJ Delorie (which you should know if you are a programmer) shares this view [citation needed].

Don't take me wrong! All the software I created is Open Source, but I released it in a license that basically says "Do whatever you want to do; you are not required to make your app open source, but give credit where credit is due."

EDIT:

rufee, why don't you install the latest Ubuntu? If you install Wine in it, you can run your favorite Windows Games in Linux! I have Max Payne, GTA IV, HL (of course) and a bunch of free games. There are also cool alternatives, and if i'm not mistaken, there's a port of the Quake engine that can actually run HL and mods natively, though I cannot confirm it does the job perfectly.

EDIT 2:
There is a Steam-like platform on Linux, it's called Desura.
