Hey TWHL, I'm putting a competition out there, with a pretty decent prize I'm sure you'd like.

If any of you are familiar with the games Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, and are an experienced Source mapper, this competition is for you.

I want you to map a Fallout wasteland; one with all the dirt, the ruinous structures, the Vaults. You will be bound to the following rules:

1. No grassy plains, no living trees.

2. It must have a 3d skybox that seamlessly makes the map looks as if it goes on to the horizon. (Detailed, at that.)

3. It must have a Vault, but it doesn't have to be connected to the map or accessible.

4. Custom content to a minimum.

5. It must have HDR.

The prize will be the $20 game package of The Ship, The Ship Singleplayer, and The Ship Tutorial. Also, (I'm not sure if this is a limited-time deal that will pass away soon,) when you receive it as a gift, you will be given another pack to send to another friend. The Ship is a really fun and original multiplayer game on the Source engine.

So, anybody interested in the competition?

I suppose a due date would be December 24th: the night before Christmas.

Thanks.

I saw a gameplay video of the ship. Bunch of people on a ship, you try to kill somebody, somebody try to kill you. Repeat as necessary.

A hunt; lots of people on a ship, you have to kill one specific person and one specific person has to kill you. Kill other people to lose money, or be banned for doing it with repetition. Pull out a weapon in front of a guard to be arrested. Weaker weapons can give you much more money for kills. All the meanwhile, take care of yourself like you're a Sims characters.

I love it. It requires a lot of thought and investigation.

Seeing the title and part of the above post only, I came in with the following post in mind:
"So, The Ship then. But good."
Then I realized you were talking about the ship and not a similar concept in a Fallout 3 mod.
I tried the goldsource "beta" of TS. It was alright at first, but then it quickly got boring.

That said, the compo itself is interesting. But why is custom content kept to a minimum? Surely you don't want brush-based vault doors using stock HL2 metal textures?

There's a specific reason for that, Jeffy mah boi.

Where you would use a Vault door, just keep it blank; leave room for a Vault door, but just don't do anything with it.

This is called post apocalyptic, not Fallout.
As far as I'm concerned, Stalker presented a barren wasteland much better than Fallout. The original Mad Max also did a great job.

But why would such a map have to have a vault?

I have to agree that The Ship was a jolly good time back in the day, though.

I could give it a go, but I already have The Ship. It IS kinda fun. But you definitely need a lot of people playing. Any size limits? Are we allowed to make the inside of the vault, too, because that would be interesting and you didn't exactly state otherwise.

I think he genuinely means that he wants a map based on Fallout, not just any post apocalyptic setting. :P

I'm out though, for two reasons really.

1.Source
2.The Ship

To make people more interested I will up the ante and donate a prize for the runnings. The winner will receive a copy of Bethesda's hit new fantasy game, The Elder Scrolls: Arena.

Pffftt.... HAHAHAHAHA. Bethesda's tools don't work.

Seriously, though. I'm not sure whether to resent them for having such unstable, unusable tools, or respect them more for being able to actually make such good games with them.

I understand reason nr. 2, but 1? I thought you were making efforts to learn source mapping.
