Black Ops 2, Wizorb, Planetside 2, Diablo 3

Oh and I made the roster of Reddit's Battlefield 3 team. Pretty damn stoked. They we are undefeated 11-0 in all matchups, but we focus on 32v32.

Played some Hitman Blood Money for the first time in years. I think the first time I played it I didn't really plan anything out and blasted my way through it. Taking my time this time around and enjoying it a lot more than I remember.

Also, despite not having any money to spend on it, the summer sales have netted me Dota2, Civ V and Arma 2 + Arrowhead (for DayZ obviously)

My friends are awesome.

You like Far Cry 2? I don't understand...

Do you like the bit where you're driving from one side of the map to the other and nothing happens or the bit where you kill every single person you ever meet because fuck friendlies?

I'm in the process of buying Arma II, mainly for Arma II itself tbh, and I'm getting it now because it's cheap. I might end up getting a new pc in two years or so, so maybe I will be able to play it eventually.

And I quite liked Far Cry 2. I didn't actually mind all of the driving and stuff, and I liked the weapon mechanics. If it were up to me however I would make it so that weapons degrade a lot slower, and do something to stop it being so easy to just go in and get a new weapon. Maybe closing the arsenal as well as the gunshop during missions. I don't think there was ever a single time during that game where I used a weapon that wasn't in perfect condition.

yeah the driving didnt worry me because the worlds were full of detail and atmosphere.
The weapons were cool, with degrading and jamming and stuff
sure the driving past checkpoints all the time was a bit dumb too, but i thought it was good. atleast it had a decent story and some good characters

And it kinda reminded me of Apocalypse Now, so that was cool.

I just couldn't get into it. Tried it first on 360 when it came out, found it boring. Years later, bought the PC version because I figured it would at least be full of eye-candy, being a cry-engine game that came out after Crysis... big mistake. On max settings it looked like garbage compared to max settings Crysis, and surprise surprise, I still found it boring.

I guess everyone's tastes are different though. I'll probably give 3 a shot once it's on sale on Steam, considering the good reviews some of you are giving the series. Maybe impressive visuals will allow me to remain interested for five-ten minutes longer per mission and get farther in the game.

Not until standalone, which will use both VAC and in-engine anti-hack measures (of which arma 2 has none whatsoever).

Until then, play on a private hive. Most have whitelists to get on, and hackers are perma-banned on first offense by real living human moderaters. That's what I'd be doing if I still played, but I'm waiting for the standalone.

Either scan the server browser for the word private and visit some sites you see, or check out http://www.reddit.com/r/DayZServers, where server owners make craigslist-style posts looking for more players. (minus the kinky sex stuff)

It's not for everyone. Rocket built a game that he wanted to play, (kinda like Notch did, rocket just has more niche tastes) he's in the military and he LOVES wilderness survival. The zombies were actually added after the fact, a suggestion by his friends, to spice up the survival gameplay. The game is essentially a social experiment. Turns out that like 95% of videogamers are complete sadistic assholes. The 5% that aren't are what makes DayZ fun for me. Without those murderous assholes, finding friendly survivors wouldn't be nearly as exciting.

Offering someone who's about to die of thirst one of the two cans of soda in my backpack genuinely makes me feel good about myself, considering my other option, and so few games can do that. Maybe that guy is ten or twenty hours into his character. Maybe he's fifty hours in. Imagine how good he feels after being saved when I could've just put a bullet in his head and taken his gear, causing him to start all over? And when someone does the same for me, I feel just as great. Really no other game I've played feels the same.

To make the most out of the enjoyment, playing in a group is best. There's safety in numbers. If you're alone and you encounter a douchebag with a gun, you're probably going to be shot in the face for a can of beans. If that same douchebag encounters you and three of your friends, he's going to be begging you to you to allow him to pass unharmed.

I hope that's sufficient explanation!

While I admit I got some enjoyment out of it, I couldn't get immersed because of how clunky everything feels in the Arma 2 engine. Doors which work when they feel like it, laggy zombies running through walls and the worse movement I've ever experienced in a player avatar.

There was one moment when I was walking along the coast and I spied a police car coming down the road, followed by another blue car. I hit the dirt and didn't move. They stopped not far from me and as far as I can tell they were looting a body. Then they headed off back the way they came. I reckon the corpse was a friend they were communicating with over TS. Seemed kinda cool, saving his gear for him and everything and I can only assume that they had some kind of base further down the road.

Then I stood up and ran a few feet before a shot ripped though my back and out of my chest. Fell to the floor unconscious, bleeding out at a rapid rate, then someone ran over and put a revolver to my head.

Yeah. Sounds like a third party was watching your entire little encounter unfold from a distance. After the two vehicles(cop cars aren't in the game, so, must've been two blue sedans) left, they sprung on the opportunity which presented itself(shooting you for your gear).

Shit luck, but look on the bright side, you were a fresh spawn (if you weren't, what in the living hell were you doing on the coast) so you didn't really lose anything. Imagine if you were 30 hours in.

"could've been worse" - DayZ official motto

Far Cry 3.

It's fucking good.

[edit] Maybe I should elaborate.

I had just bought a bow and quiver of 5 arrows. Since I've just started the game a few hours ago, this bow replaces my only existing weapon slot out of a possible four. I decided to walk rather than drive or fast travel to my next objective, probably because I desired to try the bow out. I'm walking through dense foliage and come to a clearing when I hear someone way ahead yell "Shit! Dogs!"

Rabid dogs are a problem on the islands. I sprint to a very large rock in the sand and duck down. Automatic gunfire erupts ahead of me. I hear at least two men yelling. More gunfire. After a few seconds, silence.

I peek around the rock to see one man with an AK-47 walking slowly towards his two friend's bodies in the sand and a few rabid dog corpses strewn about. I duck back behind the rock, draw my bow tight, peek out and put an arrow through the last mans head. I walk up, retrieve my arrow, find they belong to the terrorist faction who kidnapped my friends and I don't feel bad. I loot them, decide not to skin the rabid dogs, and move on back into the jungle.

4 minutes later I am attacked by a tiger that I didn't see. I hit him with one arrow, he pounces on me and grabs my arm, I slash him with my machete with right arm as his jaws are clenched on my left, he lets go and staggers back, and I get up. I draw and fire an arrow as fast as I can. It misses. He pounces again, mauling me, and goes for my throat.

I've checked out a few user reviews on metacritic (Which I now find far more reliable than official reviews)

There are currently 105 positive reviews and 32 negative which is a nice gap in my eyes. What puzzles me is a lot of the negative user reviews, and even points made in the official reviews, complain about how they've stripped out a few of the systems seen in Far Cry 2... What exactly are they missing about it. The complete lack of wildlife other than zebras? The absence of ANY friendly AI? The buddy system? FUCKING MALARIA!?

These were all utterly shite features! Why would you ever want anything to do with them ever again?

Regardless, I will be getting Far Cry 3 (for Christmas now, I'm poor). If it holds on to some of Far Cry 2's good features and adds more wildlife, RPG elements and weapon customisation, I say that is a very, VERY good thing.

(I'm gonna customise me a sniper rifle. :badass: )

In other news, BF3 Aftermath was unlocked yesterday. Not tried it out yet but I've heard good things. :)

Well, definitely use a program to render the footage into a compressed file firts. I use sony's movie studio. It's prettty good and offers everything I need and you can get it for around the price of a videogame. It lets you choose what resolution to render at so you can throw in any image or video file you like. :D

Incidentally, that 6 minute video took 2 hours to upload. I live in a field.

It's nothing to do with their nationality, it's because the "incident" happens before you even start playing. You basically watch a 3 minute video of people you don't know having fun and then you are told they are kidnapped. When the game actually starts you are already in a cage. I know nothing whatsoever about the characters and have no connection or feelings for them. I might as well be rescuing strangers like on a cs_map. Even that's more engaging though because hostages actually would be strangers.

At least I'm not being forced to rescue some dirty, communist, drunkard Europeans. (c wut i did thur)

Do I relate to this character? I don't think it matters.
Posted 11 years ago2012-12-15 00:37:14 UTC Post #311584
It's all about the story.

Ever seen the film American History X? This film is especially powerful to me, from a story-telling perspective, because of one particular scene. The main characters are neo-nazis and white supremacists, but much of the film is spent showing the connection that the older and younger brother have with eachother, and their friends as well. Their father was a racist, and he raised them to be racists of course, but now that he's gone they just have eachother.

A bit into the film, a basketball game takes place between the group of white supremacists and a group of black guys roughly the same age, and who are also clearly friends. The winner of the game will get rights to the court. The game is tense, and when it was over, and the skin-heads won(a group I normally would instantly hate, because racists are scum) I was excited. I realized I was rooting for them to win the game the whole time, not because I like white supremacists, but because by that point I had gotten to know the characters and saw them as human. Then, at the end of the film, the hardship and climax has happened and the story completes.

Farcry 3 fucked this up completely. The hardship happens after a 3 minute video of some dumb kids partying.

Quality of story telling is everything.

I guess I am not the only one who noticed that steam is promoting a recent release called the War Z?

It is basically a standalone version of the Day Z mod, developed by a different company.

Apparently there are some big discussions going on and many have bad things to say about the game, like it being p2w, lacking advertised elements and generally being a rip off.

From first glance it looks to me like it could have potential though. The p2w claim doesn't seem to have any ground, but regarding the rest, I guess you have to buy the game to figure out if is true or not.

Do any of you know it?
