Hello TWHL, thank you for hosting such a great source of information and community, I am very glad to have found you, and to have started modding my favourite game of all time (only now ...).
Someone said in the chatbox to make a WON thread, so I did.
How about we stop complaining about the poor port which is vanilla Steam HL and play singleplayer maps and mods on the older (better) half-life, which had much cooler menus, better loading times and less bugs and problems. When I first played HL steam I only liked it because I didn't have music on my old cracked hl, and I was glad to have bought it, until I played Blue shift and I realised the attention was moving towards Half-life 2 and it's new familly, and all the other new games.
I started playing half life multiplayer late, long after won died, on WON2, playing hldm on some bulgarian server (I thought they played so fast because they had their mouse sensitivity up, and tried sensitivity 50 and got used to it, and got pretty good actually ...). It was fun, especially tfc. I continued playing tfc on steam on conc servers and si and th and other mods, mostly mp. Whenever I wanted to play an old mod, I installed the sierra version of HL, and I encourage you to do so as well.

Wall of text TL;DR: Hi, I'm new here, nice to meet you, use WON hl if you don't like steam, much cooler, maybe we could play/set a server there for nostalgia's sake.

Welcome, nice to meet you.
That sounds like an interesting idea, maybe we should :)

How exactly is Steam HL a poor port? The engine was updated to support transparency on models which makes it excellent for using the new HD models available.

All I know is The Core won't run on WON HL and we have no intention of working on a way to make it. Same reason we don't support IE6 at work when building websites. It's outdated.

WON HL is in no way better than the current HL (besides the 2013 surprise from valve) period.
That being said here's why:
I really dont like the non window type ui's anymore, i feel very enclosed and a window server browser is godsent.
WON is full of non-steam hackers.
Steam integration.
Its OLD and very horrible (comparing cs 1.5 to 1.6).
Adding to being old nothing custom works on it, even maps break.
You are one of those people who got left behind by valves generational gap's. I hate that valve does this, keeps updating their old games to better fit steam, that's where the gap occurs. For example Quake II, when i first played it it was v3.20, 10 years later its still v3.20, valve does not get that they are breaking the games we like (about the 2013 update).

Actually, Urby, I believe the transparency will still work on WON HL, seeming as how the only thing that was updated was the hw.dll and sw.dll, so quite literally, you could just drop those in and they would work just fine as far as I know.

You have valid points, I know. You can't argue with better load times and menus. But it won't matter for many, plus there's cool UIs in steam mods as well.

After valve fucked away with steam HL by appeasing to the faceless penguins, I have already transferred a copy of WON HL to my computer. I love me some old software mode HL

Sure, the menu's had more style, but Steam's are smoother and easier to navigate. And I honestly can't say I ever noticed any difference in load times.

Basically what Urby said. No point using outdated software.

Load times ? You tend to forget them after you install an SSD

Maybe. Either way, The Core will not run on WON.

This is like patching Wolfenstein3D to run on Windows 7.
Posted 11 years ago2013-02-18 01:17:19 UTC Post #312675
But Stu, they actually did that.

You can buy Wolfenstein 3d and even DOOM on Steam....

Actually, model transparancy was one of the last updates they did for WON, then the last patch came only with Steam and was never made for WON. From my experience, having just installed WON Half-Life for my brother who doesn't have internet at my parents house, WON has problems. Most of the mods I've made just crash WON Half-Life to desktop when you try and play them, but not on Steam Half-Life.

I honestly see no difference in either version of Half-Life and nobody here has really explained why WON Half-Life is better than Steam Half-Life. So feel free to explain why you think this.

Thanks

I have one reason: It doesn't need Steam. Less resource intensive.

@Dimbark: ...what? for reals? checks Steam store DUUUUUDE.

If you're worrying about Steam using resources, then you need a better computer.

@2muchvideogames
So it's broken at the moment, which nobody has given them much time to fix I might add. It's a huge jump to work on a completely different operating system, especially one as alternative as Linux, you probably didn't notice the problems they had with Macs for the first few weeks? Did you?

What's more, that doesn't really answer my question as to why WON is better than Steam? I'm still unconvinced that they are any different.

EDIT: Just updated everything and all my mods seemed to work fine, except for Sven-Coop, which has been broken for me since last year.

I have a better computer now, but I have a leftover concern from my old computer :P
