And I was worried that I was the only one still using goldsource! I'm glad to see there is still an active community out there. I've been playing since '98 (Though it didn't run very well back then).
My friend, who actually drew my little HEV-suit avatar, and I were always tinkering with the game files and eventually learned to map. Ah the excitement when I made my first little box room! Over the years the maps got less and less crappy and I kick myself in the leg for not backing up those old files.
I enjoyed the source games and did some mapping and a even a little modeling but I was never able to completely tear away from goldsrc.
Now, with thanks to this website, I am venturing into the coding side. C is my native tongue but I'm familiar with OO concepts from java so I don't think c++ will be to hard to decipher.
Just browsing through the forum, I noticed that are projects as ambitious as rewriting the hammer/worldcraft editor so I am very excited to join in the fun. I have found my nerd-haven.

Welcome to TWHL! Goldsource is kind of slowly dying out, but there are still a number of us who stick to it.

I mapped in GoldSource for about 6 years, but I've been pursuing a level design career, so I switched to using Source and other engines like Unreal Engine 3 and Unity. I specifically deleted all my GoldSource files because I did not want to be sucked back into it :P, it's too addictive.
Either way it's nice to have you.

Welcome to TWHL and I hope you will enjoy it here :)
I also felt the same way when Chat Bear was closed, and to be honest its much more friendlier here.

I also still map for Gold Source, with interest on mapping for source, but i want to leave that for latter once my girlfriend gets a hang of it :)

I learned a lot from browsing here, and it improved my skills drastically, especially thanks to cool guys like Skals mon and other active members that share their knowledge.

I occasionally start a project or two, or add onto another one. But i have an tendency not to release anything unless it feels completed.
I recently started learning C my self on my own, got to pointers in this book i am learning from. Pretty fun stuff :)

So, welcome! And hope you stay and contribute in any way or form :D

Recently finished a CS:GO Map: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=181519108

Now I'm focusing on University work, UDK stuff mainly. Some level design and some animation.

The map looks great! I love the theme. How do you like UDK vs Unity?

Hey! Welcome!
I've used GldSrc, Source, Unity, Udk, GTK Radient etc etc.
Hammer = home for me, but in my opinion, the UDK is amazing compared to Unity.

What Tetsu0 said.
Comparing UDK and Unity is hard, because Unity isn't really a level design program, everything you do in Unity is through your own codes and scripts, 90% of the stuff I did in my case was just JavaScript.
Unity is way more open, since you can program pretty much anything the coding languages allow you to, but UDK is great since it already has all the code there, perfectly set up for you, just like VHE has.
I love UDK since importing custom content is like 10x easier than VHE, but capability wise the two are about the same; Source and UT3 that is :).

My friend is a pro in Unity. He said that one of the greatest minuses of Unity is 'you cannot create caves'. Actuall, I tried it too, but I didn't know anything of JavaScript back then.
