Generally speaking, how difficult is it to port a map from GoldSrc to Source?

I ask because I have put roughly eight to twelve hours of work into my entry and have just now realised that I had been working with GoldSrc.

Not hard at all TJB!

Converting GS maps to Hammer 4
If you didn't already know, you can open .rmf in Hammer 4, and simply 'save as' vmf.(You can also do this in Sledge) ;)

Hammer 4 even has legacy entity support, but DON'T use them--they may adversely affect your map. Instead, change func_walls to func_detail, and illusionarys to func_brush with solidity to 'never'.

Note
Func_brush can be used for many things, but try to use them sparingly, as too many can cause problems in your map.

Note
ALWAYS func_detail non-VVISblocking brushes in your map, and most compiles should only last 5-10 minutes.

If you want your GS textures, export using Wally or rip them by decompiling a wadincluded bsp. Then, convert them with VTFedit, and use 'replace' feature in the texture browser to apply the new materials.

Note
GS textures are scaled to 1.00, and in Source, the default scale is .25

Note
Transparent materials, i.e., a grate or railing textures don't block VVIS nor seal your level, even if they are world brushes, e.g. place a toolsskybox brush behind a window, to seal the world.

Tool textures
Replace 'null' with tools/toolsnodraw, 'sky' with toolsskybox, 'clip' with toolsplayerclip, etc. All the new tools materials will show up in the browser if you type 'tools' in the search box.

If you have any questions, feel free to post them in here and/or pm/steam :)

Before I port it to Source, here is a screenshot of the in-Sledge view of the centrepoint of the 'room', which for the purposes of the screenshot I have separated from the rest of the map.
User posted image
I am doing a half-timbered house, as that is an architectural style I have always admired.
I feel it still counts as a 'room', as while I am making the inside of the house for the sake of completeness, the main focus of the map will be the outside and yard area.

It shur is a sexy style.
I kind of want to build a tiny cottage somewhere on the property in the style because it seems to be fairly simple, but I think mapping it is a lot more realistic.

So many ideas for this; I may also refit one of my original Rooms:S maps.. Decisions decisions :P

My map is definitely gonna have some combat, interactivity, and/or puzzles this time around, and is probably going to turn into a bit of a tribute map to twhl members, past and present.

Note
Gameplay is not required for your room, though it IS absolutely encouraged! :)

Horrendous attitude rufee! Don't be like that.

When I first joined TWHL my name was "Mr. Good Map". This was, hilariously, not the case. But I was shit and still contributed to the community.

You're making yourself the opposite of this case and instead of being stupidly arrogant about your work like 8 year old me, you're putting yourself down when you really, really shouldn't be!

Everyone here would love to see a contribution from you rufee, even if you don't think what you have will be up to par - because whatever you make will be!

Ditto!

Patience is my worst enemy. Sometimes you just need to put in the time to fully realize your idea, and sometimes it's simply scaling the vision down to a more workable challenge, that makes the magic happen ;)

Sometimes you know exactly what you need to do to pull something off, but simply lack the will.. If it's not one thing, it's another..

Sometimes a project should not continue past the planning phase, because of an obvious flaw or conflict you discover.. Start with a bunch of variations of your original idea, and then move forward with only the most promising ones.

Mr. Good Map is correct! we are all here for you for questions and/or to brainstorm ideas :)

^ Indeed!

Why is that though? Why do new mappers have so much energy, and where does it go when we finally start to figure out what we are doing?

My energy comes and goes. It reflects my lifestyle though.

The more I exercise my body and mind the more energy I have.

My attention has been divided though as I spend most of my free time designing things to build and make rather than maps to play.

I think school wore on me as well as it taught me to procrastinate my time away.
Posted 10 years ago2014-05-04 01:53:17 UTC Post #319187
Possibly interesting fact. My interest in level design dwindled when I worked in web design full time. It would take months for me to get inspired to map for about an hour.

Now, I'm managing support, meaning I do a lot of problem solving and much less design work and I can now quite happily map for 6 hours straight.

It's scary how much your creativity is affected by trivial day to day shit.

Back on topic

Some good looking stuff popping up in here guys. :D

Posted 10 years ago2014-05-04 10:26:12 UTC Post #319189
Sure ;)

Also no reason why it shouldn't be judged. Depending on what the model is, you could build a little presentation room for it, or i could help you with that if you aren't a source mapper ;)

In the game I am only triggering 4 env_lasers, however in game this causes the middle lasers to turn on and point at some random position, and it's really pissing me off. I've no idea why it's doing this as there is certainly no I/O problems.

If it's not an I/O problem, possibly there is something parented that's being fussy?(If yes, try parenting it a different way) If you can't sort it, post/pm the vmf and I'd be happy to troubleshoot it
Captain Terror Captain Terrorwhen a man loves a woman
Posted 10 years ago2014-05-04 11:45:37 UTC Post #319194
I've tried making one set of env_lasers and another of env_beams. They're all parented to the central func_rotating ( but other things have behaved incredibly odd when parented to a func_rotating ).
If I parented it to a train or something that went around a circular path, I would, but because it's not exactly circular at some point the lasers would go out of sync.

Try adding a orgin brush to the func_rotating(I know it's not needed, sometimes it helps fsr).

Source entities are pretty flexible, if not a little buggy. (If something doesn't work one way, try another) TopHattWaffle has some great entity tutorials, i would definitely recommend his channel for some unconventional examples/ideas ;)

It appears that the door arches are walled off. I don't know if any of that is accessible.

Textures could be smooth stone, good trims along some stuff, bricks maybe, idk.

Yeah I'm thinking large stones that are chipped and weathered away at the corners. You will be able to use those doorways as portals to get around.

Made some soul-like pickups you have to go around grabbing to unlock barriers.
