Minicompo time!

Compo type: map from base
Engine: GoldSource
Game: HL singleplayer (the base game, no mods)
Assets: Vanilla only
Deadline: July 19th

Your task is to detail and dress up a boring bland base map, provided by Rimrook. You are allowed to replace the textures already applied, you may NOT change the geometry/brushwork, however, you are allowed to cut into existing geometry if you want to add a window, a trim or whatever, as long as the walls you're cutting into are not exposed to the void.
This is a GoldSource vanilla HL mapping minicompo, so you're going to have to dust off your vanilla HL mapping skills.

There will be a prize, and ONE prize only.
The winner will receive a free Minecraft code! If you've always wanted to give Minecraft try, but never got around buying a code, here's your chance to win one. The winner will also be allowed access on my Minecraft server.

I'd like to announce the winner on July 20th, as this date marks the one year anniversary of my Minecraft server. You only have 18 days to submit your entry. The base map isn't that big, so there should be enough time to work on it.

Base map download

When you submit, name your bsp file as atomsminicompobase_<yourname>.bsp.
You can submit your entry via PM. Make sure you provide a working download link. If your link isn't working, too bad, I'm not going to chase the authors.

Good luck!

We have to pay to enter, huh? (Yeah, I know you meant "prize" :P )
... boring bland ... map, provided by Rimrook.
That's not a valid sentence. Rimrook and boring/bland can't used in the same context.
(I was gonna go with "YOU MEAN ANY OF RIMROOK'S MAPS HAHAHA", but if anyone took that even the slightest bit seriously... )

I'mma check this out now.

EDIT: When you say we can't change the geometry, you mean just the existing geometry, right?

K. Whatever you say. :P
When you say we can't change the geometry, you mean just the existing geometry, right?
Yes, the existing geometry may not be changed, you can only add your own brushwork to it. Cutting into the existing geometry is fine, as long as you don't change the overall shape of the geometry. So you can cut a hole in the wall for a window or whatever, but only if that wall is not in direct contact with the void. Hope that makes sense.

Looking good Atom! I love Rim's basemap, and limiting it to vanilla textures should make it fun =)

I always wanted to make a cartoony/goofy bamboo house or viking inn. The building in the corner of the map will be a good excuse to practice, if i can come up with a nice way to adhere it in the walls...

Ghost: what is your excuse this time? You can't detail a 1024 ^3 Goldsource basemap room with vanilla assets?

This is maybe the easiest mini-contest to join yet, AND there is a nice prize, AND STILL people still find excuses to do nothing...

Don't take my rant personally, guess I just miss the old days when people participated more :(

Assets: Vanilla only
So, I would take that to mean:
halflife.wad
decals.wad
liquids.wad
xeno.wad

?

@Ghoster: what's the problem?

@Tet: Only vanilla assets, the default wads that come with the game. I feel that when people are using custom wads, they could have an advantage over those that use vanilla wads. You just have to be creative with the good old vanilla textures that we all still admire in one way or another. I know I do. Hope you're OK with this rule.

Mapping for goldsource is basically the same as mapping for source, except everything is made of brushwork, the trigger system is much more basic, and you have texture lighting in addition to entity lighting.

Nothing to be afraid of - it's actually much more simple.

I might give this a whirl, assuming I can come up with a nice theme idea. I already have a minecraft code, though, so I would forfeit my prize to whoever gets second place should I win.

It's kinda stretching the rules a bit, but does the Half-Life alpha that was leaked count as "stock" textures? There are a few offices ones I'd really like to use.

I personally would interpret "stock" to mean anything you would have in doing a fresh install of steam Half-Life, and no more.

But then, I'm not the one making the rules.

Haha, seriously? There is literally no detail in the base map. I would attempt this but...

...was the base map intentionally made badly? There is a lot of evidence that... shudder... carving was used. :zomg:

The prize is literally useless to me as well... guess I won't bother after all.

You could dress and light this map in a couple of hours! Make use of the HL models for sure to help fill the space!

Also there is not a thing wrong with the basemap, wth? :o

Maybe working on the Core for 4 years(or however the fuck-long it's been) has made you even more snooty than normal, Urbles? (being British already, of course) :P

Minicompo question
Atom, am I correct in assuming we can add as much brushwork as we like (including structural stuff, not just props/prefabs), or would you prefer to have NO new walls/catwalks etc added to the map?

Hmmm. Ok. I feel those textures are "stock enough" to fit well with the vanilla HL textures.

Correct.

To be fair, I did notice doors placed with horizontal cuts in the walls, which is generally made by carving. It's possible Rim tossed it together as quickly as possible, since, you know, it's a small base map for a detailing compo.

I DO admit I would have liked seen some light fixtures and maybe a few other peripheral things, but this is nothing I can't add myself in 10 minutes.

That said, I feel the map looks very cleanly made, and I've not a single issue with it so far, in-fact I like it a lot; It's WAY better than I could have done, especially in the timeframe! ;P

A little progress on mine, started today:

Not being snooty, just observing as a somewhat experienced mapper that the carve tool appears to have been used.

The first thing I learned after joining TWHL was that the carve tool is the Devil's work and people who use it go to Hell. :P

Posted 9 years ago2014-07-07 09:32:00 UTC Post #320154
The carve tool can be acceptable in some circumstances, considering it's just a shortcut to clip a number of times. Of course you wouldn't do it with cylinders and so on, but it's not something to be deemed "evil" and ignored entirely. It can be misused, but so can pretty much everything else. You wouldn't disown the VM tool simply because it can allow you to easily create invalid brushwork, would you?

@ Ghost, don't be afraid to lose :) We're not going to make fun of you for not making something incredible. This is a chance to flex your brain muscle. All the limits imposed in these competitions are exercises for creativity. Give it your best shot and you might win. I can GUARANTEE that you'll lose if you don't submit an entry. Start with picking a theme for the walls, texture everything in a certain area, and make trims and details by clipping existing brushwork.

@ Urby
There is a lot of evidence that... shudder... carving was used.
I've been replacing the existing geometry to suit my needs. The wall size, location, etc hasn't been changed, but I've been reorganizing as i go. The first thing i noted that drove me crazy was the little guard booth on the bottom floor near one of the doors. The floor is split into 4 sections and the walls are just crazy nuts. So I replaced that whole floor with one 5-sided brush and it satisfied the OCD section of my brain.

Do you even realize what a fgt you sound like? I swear you brits moan like fucking women...

So what if some of the brushwork is redundantly clipped? Inefficient or not, I don't think anyone is going to run out of brushes on this little map, so it's completely immaterial if fucking carve was used or not!

If you can't be fucked to participate or simply don't have the time, maybe just say that next time rather than making meaningless excuses :|

If you don't like the way how some walls are clipped/carved or whatever in the base map, feel free to fix it, but don't change the shape of the brush, from a visual standpoint, it should be the same, ie, look the same as before the fix.

I played a bit in Sledge with Rim's base map over the last weekend, but i got carried away and F-ed up my entry. I'm still going to finish it, but not as a comp entry. Either way, going a different theme since i realized my only map uploaded here (catacombs) is pretty similar to the viking inn i had in mind...So oriental/bamboo theme it is.
This is what i got so far, i hope this weekend it'll be 75% done.

Edit: Ok now this is going to be fun, I've been wanting to play minecraft for some time now, just been too lazy to try it.

I have an idea for my entry, wip.s on their way soon.

My only complaint is that the stock textures are poo and have no blending but I will go ahead anyway, will save me time anyway...

ZHLT.wad should be permitted simply because they are used for optimization.

Minecraft is a fun game if you're really into the theme of it. If you're not, there are only a billion mods for it. My favorite right now is Pixelmon. Completely overhauled the game and made it something new.
Rimrook RimrookSince 2003

ZHLT.wad is allowed, as it contains no actual map textures, only useful tool textures that you can use for optimizations.
