(4). I wanna join in on this one, I need a new project.

But, I vote to extend it to 2005, because a lot of early 3d was kind of shit, and I really want to do a level based off of Deus Ex (2001) or Max Payne (2001) or Thief 2 (2000).

It doesn't have to be a 3d game either, Dimbark; I would do a classic ScummVM game if #4, and a classic arcade game of some kind if #3.

If you really wanted to still make those maps for 2005 I say go for it, maybe we could allow for newer games, with the understanding you will lose some of your point score the further away you get from 2000, e.g., in the event of a tie, the pre-2K map would win over one from 2005.

That looks like a neat game Jessie :)

Current Votes
3 votes - #3(remake ANY pre-2K game)
2 votes - #4(remake any PC pre-2K game)

My vote is for #3 because it includes arcade games. FYI, both #3 and #4 include your own levels if you wanted to enter something as Then & Now ;)

I would also vote for Remake any pre-2000 game. Arcade for the win!

Just a question about the rules, wich I did ask earlier in this post, but didn't get a clear answer from whoever came up with this idea.

Would it be against the rules to remake a level from a game wich was made before 2000 for a game wich was released after 2000, but the map was also made after 2000.

Example:
The original map is from a game made in 1995. However, 6 years later in 2001 an update was made to the game adding an additional map. In 2005 a sequel was released, and I want to recreate that 2001 map in the 2005 sequel.

Would that be allowed, if the map itself is made post-2000, but the game it was made for was made pre-2000?

If I were making the decision, I would think that the 'date' we're looking at is the release date of the content... However..The official compo has not been decided yet.
When it is, there will be an official thread and list of rules and guidelines.

We're just tossing ideas around right now.

I'm sure it wouldn't be held against you by the judges Orange, close enough imo

I hope we get this compo or something else up soon, because like Brett, I only really map for competitons anymore. And yeah Doc_O, we just playing around, this is nothing official :)

Current Tally
4 votes - #3(remake ANY pre-2K game)
2 votes - #4(remake any PC pre-2K game)

Of course I know this is not official yet. Though that's a very loose defintion of "official". If you meant official in this thread, then it probably is. If you meant official on this website, then probably not. If you meant official in the overall Source and GoldSource engine world(?) then this website might not even be official.

I just asked becuase I was curious if these "unofficial" competition rules allowed it.

I think your overthinking your responses Dr.Orange. Of course when a TWHLien refers to a competition as "official" they only mean that it's hosted by a moderator and not just being discussed by us peons. ;D

Everything is pretty "unofficial" around here besides the Golden Rufee Coin and The Official Map of TWHL, which are officially official User posted image User posted image User posted image

Unofficially I don't think there is enough interest for a compo right now, as much as we're trying to get it off the ground... Maybe if Atom and Rim rebooted the mini/map-from-base challenges we could get something going that more people'd be interested in?

I suspect an official compo may be the only way to re-spark anyone's interest even in mini-stuff. More people seem to put in the effort to get an entry in rather than dropping out with official stuff.

And from a site standpoint, it'd help tide us, the restless community, over in the time until TWHL4 :P

Official minicompos? IDK, it seems to me it's way more likely people are going to participate in something if there's a basemap or even a texture pack included.

Texture Pack 2 might be epic...

Well, in recreating something, there's already something to directly work from, even if it's not something Slammer uses. (Sledge/Hammer)

Dude's, official mini competition is exactly what TWHL could use right now. I'm sure for relative ages, participation would be up in something like that.

One word. " " That's right! I'm left "speechless" after viewing such a divine creation, never saw that POS (Perfect Opportunity of Science) map. Thanks for sharing MCPoker's colossal heap of shibby Captain. Check out my mad accurate review on the brilliant masterpiece of craft.

Mini competitions could work, sure, but what's wrong with a regular competition? We haven't had one for about a year and a half.

Map-from-base compos are fun and easy because you just have to decorate and go. I agree remaking-a-game is just like having preexisting content, because you already have a blueprint of what to do.

WAIT.. How about a MCPOKER RENOVATION PROJECT Compo??

You've inherited the deed(rmf) to MISSION MCPOKER, and your job is to use the original mcpoker source files to make some sort of completed map or SP mod?

Remember when Hotdog turned this into this?! Maybe just a plain adopt-a-map compo might be fun? :)

Style: a distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles according to which something is designed.
User posted image
Found this cool image.

One neat idea for a competition would be to define a "style" to adhere to with a broad scope of interpretation.

This sample image could exemplify a certain style with a defining list such as:

1. Use cool tones.
2. Make textures somewhere between flat shaded and realistic.
3. Finally, make your level(s) reflect tranquility.

Of course this is only one example of an infinite amount of styles possible.

The set amount of stipulations could range from just a couple to many.

Oy, 31 Brushes maybe?
Well I'm late to the thread and don't have much input, other than to say I would love to have this type of contest. A nice trim technical limitation of 31 brushes, 20 brushes, whatever. Yes it's been done but not for a while, and I haven't done it.

what about making a limited but reasonable set of construction materials, prefabs like beams, pillars, pipes, lamps etc, pretextured probably, and giving everyone the freedom to build anything they want out of it

The winning Competition 34 brief/rules will be used for Compo 35 =P

Bruce
I like your idea. Maybe do it in stages, i.e., have a themed prefab contest first, and den use the submitted prefabs for the compo? Maybe instead there is a suitable prefab pack already out there, OR find someone to make/donate all the the construction materials for consistency's sake.

In competition 35 we will all draw from a hat a winner so that it's fair before deciding a competition brief. The winner shall in turn decide the next competition which I predict will be "guess the brief". Winner gets to buy the hat for competition 37's fair jurisdiction. However, if the hat happens to be racist, you will not be allowed to put your own name in the hat. Instead, you will have to provide the paper as well. If the paper's color reflects the racism of the hat you will be asked to donate a pencil. If your racist hat is directed towards a certain ethnicity and your pencil is a number 2 then you will be disqualified from using emoticons in the forums for X amount of years. X equaling zero. Since technically X can only equal X but it now equals zero, space and time as we know it will cease to exist and you will be perma-banned from the site since it nor you will continue to be.

Dr. C.T. why yes, being racist two times cancels itself out, but it also cancels the hat out so you'd have to provide a new one. If your second hat is out of season we will ask that you provide some type of spices and also we will require that the hat is baptized and finally it must pass at the top of it's class and provide identification and proof of ownership of its threads. Thank you.

I wasn't really frustrated but I do see this not going anywhere for some time and things seemed a little dry so my lame attempts of humor actually should point out that I don't do drugs and seldom even drink. I'm pretty sure poisoning myself wouldn't allow me to come up with any jokes.

The prefab idea is pretty cool, I remembered that someone had mentioned it before. IMO it might be kind of boring though but I could be wrong. Does anyone find any interest in the style idea? Perhaps the style could be applied to the prefabs we make.

A select amount of brushes would be a lot of fun to do again as it wouldn't require a ton of time.

I still vote for some type of remake though.

If we did the prefab competition it could be a series of unofficial mini competitions leading to the official prefab competition. It could be ordered in three segments. Everything would adhere to a style, let's just say the style in this example is "xen."

First segment is for people to contribute textures adhering to the xen style. Winner's textures are selected for use.

Second segment is using the winning textures to make the prefabs still adhering to the xen style. Winner's prefabs are selected for use.

The final segment or "the official competition" would use the accumulative winning content i.e. textures and prefabs to be used in the competition of course still adhering to the xen style.
