2muchvideogames suggested we make another community project.
I agree.

Initial thought: Final Fantasy style game where each member maps a house or area (initially thought to be your own house but this can change at a later date) and those individual areas are connected via an overworld of some type.

We can think of a basic (or complex) plot and each members area will unlock an ability or key or new area that would be needed to get to the next area.

This thread will serve to be a discussion thread and as such, any and all ideas are welcome!

This might be a bit complicated for me as I have never played Final Fantasy.
I have seen Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within film tho.

@KB90: Doesn't sound like it's too important to have played them, just think of it as a hub world connected to multiple maps and you can play each map in whatever order you like. If I recall, the 'Issues' mod does a similar thing.

@Dim: I think it's been well established that any Source projects are doomed to fail here, so Goldsource is the sensible choice :P

Hell, if there were a community project to map mine house, I might actually finish one of those! I keep trying to map 'em, and stopping partway despite success.

I disagree. Source is a better option nowadays unless you really want GoldSrc. Anyway, the core concept of a team mapping project is getting things done before the world ends.

I've never played Final Fantasy either. You guys have to keep team projects like these a bit tidier or something for the members that don't have much time like me. I don't even know how some of you adults from here summon the time to map!

We can go source. EP2 is the latest and greatest so I'd prefer that over any other flavor of source.

And if we really want to split down the road, maybe we can expand the storyline between engines. Have part 1 be in Goldsource and part 2 be in Source?

@Themaster12234, you can of course participate! Everyone is welcome regardless of skill.

Honestly, i don't think it will be that complicated... once we settle on a storyline (if any at all) each map will be one idea, one single player goal to accomplish. Then you're just teleported back to the overworld.

Maybe i'll make up a quick demo for you guys.

The only reason I'd prefer source is for entity work, otherwise I'd prefer goldsrc. If we were to use Goldsrc, could we use the spirit engine aLa twhl tower?

Yeah, despite being a bit of a mess, Spirit has too many nice functions and entities for me to not want to use it.

As for the engine, I have to say goldsource. It's what I know and am comfortable with.

You don't have to know anything about it. It gives you extra functionality if you need it. Otherwise, it's just like vanilla.

I took most of last night figuring out level changes. I think i got it figured out nicely.

Who has a storyline? Simple, something in the HL universe.

Maybe a proyect of Black Mesa to use a portal that let you go to another world (Xen) after the incident, but something go wrong and the player starts to travel to a lot of worlds and dimensions..

I don't know, if nobody like it, i'll think another thing :V

So: After the resonance cascade, Black Mesa continued operating under the radar working on portals? Each portal takes the player to a different world / dimension.

That could put Black Mesa as the overworld / hub map. Each member then would have their own world or area that is accessed via the portals.

This almost makes me think of Startgate now. Maybe our objective is to help out other worlds that have been taken over by the Nhilianth? But the leaders are still operating as rougue in his absence?

Tet, what if we made this a sort of competition between Goldsource and Source? Same idea, but with different teams working with different engines working on a similar idea simultaneously. All I need are the people willing to work in Source.

I'm totally willing to go Source, and there's no reason why we can't have 2. Why make it a competition though? What if we just tie in the storylines somehow?

O I said after, i want to said before, but now, I don't know what is the best option, because in Half life Opossing force Black Mesa explodes by a Atomic Bomb (if i'm not wrong), but maybe some part of black mesa doesn't take any damage, and the scientists of that part tried to create a portal to left Black Mesa, the player is the first volunteer, the machine explodes, and the player starts to travel to a lot of places, he see some vortigaunts that they're not slave, and he start to help them for rescue the planets that Nhilianth had took...

Yeah, the idea of use goldsource and source its great.

Black Mesa surviving the nuke seems unlikely. How about a small intro map set during the events of Half-Life wherein a portal experiment is damaged and teleports the player and a gaggle of his or her colleagues (and a couple of Barneys for good measure) to a hitherto unknown alien border world. This border world forms the hub as the story sees the scientists urging the player to travel through various rifts in the hopes of finding a way home.

Story idea: Black Mesa was experimenting with portal technology (duh) and accidentaly sent one of their employees to another universe wich is actually a linked multiverse to a bunch of different universes. However, this same thing happens in ANOTHER parallell univerese wich is using the Source engine.

Nah, my idea takes place before the Black Mesa incident. Completely different things.

I think that's because people are afraid to leave their GldSrc comfort zone and give Source a legitimate try. It's definitely harder to create custom content.

Love this idea - It's along the same thought process we were discussing and it fits beautifully with the overworld / hub idea. I'm picturing chunks of wall, floor and computers also being teleported in

My vote is Goldsource, even though I'm not not likely to enter.

Source is clearly superior, but demands a much larger amount of work to create something that doesn't resemble HL2.

You're talking about SOHL. Why not Sven Co-Op? It would be great to play together on a map we created together! Moreover, this mod's future is quite promising. And SVen Co-op is very easy to handle as far as I know.

You can start working anyway. 95% of Goldsource mapping is the same for any mod. But I expect it'll be SOHL since Sven changes a lot of the expected gameplay mechanics, and it'd change the original idea too much in my opinion. Unless everyone decides to scrap this idea and do a Sven map instead :P

I do like the idea of a community Sven map pack though. Sven is great fun, there can never be too many maps for Sven. Something that progresses in a more linear fashion is better for Sven. Maybe the next event? SC5 is coming out soon after all.

I've been totally waiting for something like this to get back into mapping. My vote would be GS SOHL, because I find EP2 tedious to map for with none of the improvements of CSGO SDK.

I do like the idea of a community Sven map pack though. Sven is great fun, there can never be too many maps for Sven. Something that progresses in a more linear fashion is better for Sven. Maybe the next event? SC5 is coming out soon after all.
And then we can use AngelScript, which I'm really looking forward to trying out. I love this idea.

I'm not voting, because I'm not sure if I'll finish an entry or not. But I'll at least start working on one if you choose GS.

I thought of stargate only from a storyline perspective and not so much a gate effect. Though I LOVE the stargate franchise, stargates themselves don't fit in with the mod. We may be able to create a stargate-like teleport effect though.

Shall we start fleshing out the storyline? It seems as though this mod has been voted to be a Goldsource mod featuring the benefits of Spirit of Half Life.

That's the beauty of it. A lot of the standard entities have some new fields, but you don't have to do anything with them.

The whole 'master' thing is a lot easier in Spirit for example. None of this trigger relay crap. Take my boarded doors in TWHL Tower. 3 breakables, all named 'plank' and one door with the master 'plank.' As long as 'plank' exists the door doesn't work. Break the boards and the door unlocks. So simple.

You've also go env_model, which just lets you place a model in your map. No cycler crap, and of course, lighting properties for brush entities. So if you have a block with a light texture, set it to a func_wall and you can make it flicker / toggle and so on.

One of my favourite things is the NPC control. You can chose different models and skins for every NPC. So if you have 4 grunt models, you can use them all together. :P

But yeah, otherwise, you can just stick to what you know.
