Google's "Material Design" could probably be considered one of the more "modern" designs that's popular at the moment.

So is TWHL 4 gonna be The Material Half Life?
But seriously that link is a good read.

Gradients actually give the site personality. I don't want flat colors slapped on there and then be called a site.

Of course you could also slap gradients on a poorly designed site and it will look just as ugly.

Given how the site is designed now, I'm sure the new site will look good with or without gradients. It's a matter of design.

a mix of skeuomorph and flat design would cater for all people, bro!

Even now TWHL looks very modern but since it's centered around a retro game I think it should look a bit retro as well. Please just don't fall for that new scroll down forever type crap...

Can we allow unicode characters in the member title?(can we fix that to work currently?)

Unicode is a no-go in TWHL3 but it'll work everywhere in TWHL4.

Oddly enough it seems nobody talked about the fact you can't see you're logged in, as well as if you have new messages, apart if you're on the front page (but still, you can't see your username).
Also, if you close a TWHL window in which you're writing something, there wouldn't be any confirmation message.
When it comes to the design, a modern style of design I like is like the one of this bank: http://www.halifax.co.uk/
You might want to kill me since it looks like I'm the only person loving this website's design, but it's neat, responsive, sober, perfectly adjusted :3
However, I think I prefer the current design for the HL theme. It's orange and retro, and I find it really more pleasant to use than modern responsive/bright websites like you one you posted.

You can see, at the top right of the page, under "Say hello to _, our newest member!" there's a button to logout. If you have any PMs or thread tracking alerts it will display an appropriate icon as well.

One thing that I would like to see is a sent folder for private messages.

Will you be able to edit your posts even if they're not the latest in TWHL4? So that an old spelling mistake, or even informational mistakes can be corrected.

Penguin is right, this would be great! a responsive website is what twhl would cheer up.

If you delete a private message, there should be an extra step, rather than it being done with just one click. I've just accidentally deleted a PM while writing a reply to it.

That shouldn't be an issue, I don't think you can actually delete PMs at all in TWHL4 >_>

There's no limit though either so it should be fine.

Only if it's less than an hour old. Otherwise the first and last posts in a thread are always editable.

What about writing something in a post that's in the middle of it all with updated information?
I just want to say that the (2) other forums I visit doesn't have a restriction on editing, so I would really like to know why one would be approperiate out of curiosity about this system.

Some threads, like community projects and such, seem like they would benefit from having the first post anchored to the top no matter what page of the thread you're on, to keep rules/thread context/etc. visible. Any plans for something like that?

More sorting and filtering options. Such as by uploader
Maybe, might be difficult to get a user filter in, but I'll see what I can do
There already is a filter by user in each user's profile, you'd just have to copy and paste that, right?

I had a few spare minutes and made a mock map vault layout.

There's only eight maps because this was hand-made. And don't fret over the stats, the numbers are made up.
Posted 8 years ago2016-02-08 22:59:45 UTC Post #328781
I think you may have missed the video I posted not long after the post you quoted. It's less of an issue with server-side filtering and more to do with the client side interface, but as you can see in the video it's been implemented. None of the TWHL3 code exists in TWHL4 so there's nothing that can be copy/pasted.

I do like your layout but it'd be more suitable to an MOTM list or something, my preference is to show more results on each page in a grid layout on the search page.

I had totally forgotten that. Never mind my useless post then. Been too invested in my studies, it seems.

I like the idea of seeing a bit more information because right now it feels a bit scant as it is. Also applies to what's shown in the video.

Perhaps rename the forum sections to better guide forum posts?

For example:
Instead of "Maps and Mods" how about "New maps and mods" or "Works in progress"

HL engine discussion can be "GoldSource help" or similar

Posted 8 years ago2016-02-11 19:32:36 UTC Post #328819
You don't always want help when posting. But while technically "GoldSource discussion" would be more appropriate, it's also redundant. What is a forum for other than discussing things? So at least from a philosophical point of view, the areas should simply be named "GoldSource", "Source", "General", "Meta", and maybe "Other"; although this might be a bit too minimalist for some people's tastes.
Posted 8 years ago2016-02-11 23:15:55 UTC Post #328821
I think that there are still some people still aren't familiar with the name Goldsource to refer to the HL1 engine and might not know what it means. Or am I worrying about nothing?

I don't think it's a good idea to combine Source and Source 2, they're pretty different engines.

yeah if we create a separate forum section for it, and we get some nice source 2 tutorials when the SDK launches, we'll probably see a traffic increase

I have an idea! I know some forums have more descriptive icons near the thread title. Like a question mark or an exclamation mark, maybe an emoticon... I realize TWHL has the different colors and then the Circle vs Triangle. But what if we had marks for posts that asked questions in a red question mark and if the question was marked as 'answered' the thread owner can mark it as 'answered' and the icon will change to a green checkmark or something.

To make that function even more useful, perhaps highlight the post that contains the proper answer?

Example of answered post: Texas Instruments Microprocessor forum

I think this will help a lot of people out if they actually use the search bar and can see that their has an answer or not before posting a new thread or bumping an older one.

I've thought about doing a question/answer format before (like StackOverflow for example), but haven't done anything about it yet. It won't be in the first release, but it'll be in the list of future features that would be nice to have (along with stuff like poll/survey threads and similar).

How about an additional attribute when submitting a map. "Singleplayer/Multiplayer"

Hmmm?

But what if a map is b-... Wait, can you make a map that is both? I know there's a "Not in Deathmatch" flag, but is there a way to do the opposite?

Posted 7 years ago2016-07-28 05:38:30 UTC Post #330998
In my long looong history of playing Half-Life, I've only ever seen one map that could be played as both a deathmatch arena and a single player level.

Posted 7 years ago2016-07-28 09:37:40 UTC Post #331000
You can flag a trigger_relay as not in deathmatch, then have that trigger something to set up the level for singleplayer, and killtarget an entity that sets it up for deathmatch. Trigger both, with the deathmatch one being triggered a bit later to have a level that supports both.
Posted 7 years ago2016-07-28 17:55:55 UTC Post #331006
Of course, you then have to figure out a map design that works in both deathmatch and single player...
Posted 7 years ago2016-07-28 18:05:58 UTC Post #331007
Not if the file you upload includes 2 map versions, one for singleplayer and one for multiplayer.

Or if you upload something like the Hotdog Vintage Map Pack.

@solokiller: That's so simple, I feel a bit foolish for not thinking of that :pwned:

@Urby: I'm curious to see it if you happen to know what that map is.

All in all, though... I kinda want to have a go at such a level now.
