Sup,

I'm trying to test my map on a dedicated server. It's done, but I need to make sure I don't bust the entities limit error (I already cleaned it up and shouldn't), strip stuff and retry if necessary. Also, some things aren't the same when you're hosting on your PC, versus when you're on a real server. E.g.: The damage amount of trigger_hurt entities differ.

I tried creating one on my PC using both the HLDS exe from SteamCMD and the one from my half-life folder and tried to join it. It works, but after a while I get a "Steam Connection Lost" error. Fair enough I guess.

Do you guys have either:
-a way to fix the "Steam Connection Lost" error?
-a dedicated HLDM server I could test on?
-a way to get a dedicated server for cheap?

Thanks

I think the "Steam Connection Lost" error was happening because I lost internet connection at some point. The game connects to the internet just fine, but if steam hasn't been restarted, the error occurs. Good to know I guess.

Edit: Thinking about buying a new computer and recycling my old into the awesomiest HLDM server. Probably will do.

I've hosted servers through gameservers.com and had better luck with eoreality.net

Just launch the server, will cost you around 10-15 bucks and then cancel it before the month is up so you only have to pay for one month.

They're pretty easy to set up and test. From what I remember, it basically gives you a online portal to host your level and level information such as .bsp file, sound files, WAD etc. There will also be a section to edit the server's settings such as the map cycle and stuff.

"eoreality.net" doesn't seem to offer HLDM server services. I emailed them to see if they do that.

If the price is the same as their counter-strike servers it's pretty much inexpensive.

I can either pay them 25$ or so per month
or
DIY: pay extra for unlimited internet to my ISP + electricity for a 24/7 machine.

I'm actually considering launching a full time server of my own brew.
I'm undecided between these two options. The second would be a good idea if I want to use the server for something else also.
