I have been mapping for about 5 years and i have never considered releasing anything online. Part of the problem is when i played HL and then one of my maps there is a cartain lack of realism. My levels are unbarebly blocky and i can't create outdoor areas to save my life!

Any help / links to tutorials would be greatly appreciated.

Pepper wrote a terrain tutorial, and atom wrote one on "environment".

where as me ive only been mapin for about 2 weeks - and i strongly recomend the environment tutorial - its very usefull !!!! Thats my 2 cents

I've seen many tutorials... such as http://cariad.co.za/twhl/tutorial.php?id=50 and http://www.egir.dk/index.php?page=vhe_terrain.php i've seen a few more but i dont remember them anyways if those dont help search google

GenSurf is how I do my terrain. It looks really cool in this one tram level I did, though it does increase the poly count somewhat, but that can be adjusted. Ill get some screenies.
