Ok, i think i know what im doin, but im missing some vital information, how can i make the circular gate? I looked at the vertex manipulation tutorials but im not sure if that is 100% compatible with my ideas.... Anyone got any instructions or advice?

When creating a brush you can choose the type of it on the right.
Use 'arch' for this one.
It'll create a 'pipe' around the z-axis.

Read part two of the VM tutorial.

I think theres a prefab of a gate somewhere. Maybe ejoop?

Isnt there already someone making a Stargate mod? And I'm sure there are other Stargate maps out already too - do a search for them/that mod and see how they did the gate.

I've seen a prefab of a 'gate.

remember, you can make any shape, unless it is too small or define, with Vertex Manipulation. you can also take more than one brush, by ctrl clicking, and tie them together to make one large entity.

i hate vertex manipulation :badass: after 2-3 hours of hard work you just have "invalid structure or somethin" and you have to delete it, shut down hammer, windows, doors, open widndow and jump :x I'm glad that it's only 1meter to ground...
BTW- i to wanted to make stargate mod, becouse i thought it could be original, lol

You shouldn't spend two hours VMing a brush ;)

I'd personally go with the 'arch' option from the create brush tool.

Building on what Hazardous said earlier, Stretch the lined box out on your 2d views untill its roughly the shape you want it then hit 'enter'. It should bring up a dialogue box, in this you should find angle. Type in 360 in the box and hit the preview button which should be on the left under the 2D drawing. if this looks like a ring hit 'ok' or what ever's there. You can udjust the number of sides if you feel it doesn't look circular enough. You should have a ring in you map lying flat and probably not in the possition you want it. Hit Ctrl - M to bring up rotational options, in the 'Z' box put '90' and hit enter. This should rotate the ring to an upright possition. If not hit undo and try again in either the 'X' or 'Y' boxs. Then its as simple as moving the new circlular gate into the possition desired.
Sorry to drone on but nobody really went into detail on how to do it :P.

The Vertex tool may be hard to master but once you've done so it's a very powerfull tool. Nowadays, I nearly never get errors from it and when I do, I've fixed them in no-time.

Some basic rules brushes should apply to are:
All faces must be totally flat. If they aren't, either make them flat or split them up into two triangles.
A brush must be convex. Let's put it this way: all angles between two neighbour faces must be less than 180 degrees.
No two faces may lay on the same plane. In this case, you should make one face of them.

Some things about the tool:
Selecting two vertexes (the yellow dots also work) and pressing Ctrl + F creates an edge between them.
Vertexes can be merged together. When you place them at the same position, you will be asked if they have to be merged.

I use a mnemonic to remember the correct word.
Concave reminds me of a curve (same pronunciation) or a cave (obvious) and this is what we don't want.
So convex is the correct word.
Maybe a bit stupid, but it works for me.
BTW: You also have concave brushes without any errors.
But this might give you 'leaf portal saw into leaf' errors when you don't tie it to an entity.

wait, isn't convex the opposite of concave? it still works if it is right in the middle.

No! Then you get coplanar faces.
Convex: When you draw a straight line though a convex shape/body, it will cross it exactly twice. Unless you draw it onto an edge or a peak.
Concave: You can draw a straight line through it which intersects more than twice.
