I am a complete Noob to mapping and growing more frustrated at my inability to construct a simple room. I've followed the tutorials to the letter, but still sucking...Does the console have to be enabled to work with Hammer 3.4?

This I understand, but I mean to set up my editor config. I mean..this seems silly but my rooms only appear in two dimensions e.g. Is it my basic config or compile config?? Do you suggest the Zoners compile tools or the compile tools woth 3.4?

You may be at a position in the 3d view to make your room invisible, or may be in the middle of a solid brush....use WSAD and arrow keys or the space bar and mouse to fly around in the 3d view and see if you can find your room.

ok..first, i really appreciate everyones patience with a total beginner. My so-called solid brush has only four walls ...no floor or ceiling. I set up my windows, select block tool, top view for a square, right click and create object and then hollow and thus the room with only four walls only...certainly like the pics on Andy's tutorial. Thanks again.

Whats also strange is when I create the initial square with the dotted lines in the top view then try to use the selection button on the left it makes my square disappear.Am I missing or overlooking something obvious? thx

i myself hate hollowing and use my own form of creating brushes, i make the floor one brush, the walls and then the ceiling manually, no hollow, and a tip: Never use the carve tool.

you need to reinstall windows...just kidding. my approach if i was having trouble this early on would be to delete all your half-life stuff and vhe stuff, and start over. i realize this is long and protracted, and probably overkill, but i donot what to suggest with the info you've supplied. it sounds weird.

place your cursor in one of the windows (x/y,y/z, or x,z) and hit enter when your brush tool makes a dashed line. If your cursor isn't in the window, it won't create it. Also, if you select another tool, the dashed lines disappear. When you re-select the block tool, they return. Just hit enter.

You might want to download the example map and have a look at it. It might shed some light on this...
Don't worry too much about the frustration, that is just a part of mapping. Each and everyone of the people here managed to push through this and come out the other side not with their sanity I am afraid

that happened to me too everytime i opened hammer it asked to set up in options and it annoyed me loads so i downloaded 3.5 beta and it seemed to work fine but i still kept the hammer 3.4 cause it has those premade items like furniture etc but my 3.5 doesnt weird isnt it!
