1. Just use multiple brushes.

2. This site perhaps? ;)

2. Definitely. Lots and lots, read 'em all while they're hot.

u could use carve to make holes! but people will say that it just makes things worse well it does if u dont use it right! ;)

Uh, you should read the Introduction, then all of the beginner-level tutorials. Posting questions before you've done that is a complete waste of time as you won't understand the answers.

when i first got hammer i thought my god this is just too hard and even though i couldnt get the maps to work i still made maps for fun, then well after my maps didnt work i just gave up but later on i thought ok im gonna read tutorials slowely and folow each step and presto it worked my first pink cube and i was very happy!

since i practiced even though i didnt actually try the maps i got ok at it but since ur different like the rest we suggest u look at all the east tuts first build small maps as they come then expand research on how to make water or how to make doors as u practice more the better you become

let this be a lesson to all the new people around!

lol, photographic images turned into 3d levels with the power of hammer... imagine what mapping would be like if this worked! we'd be up to our ears in people playing de_ games in thier houses!

ya or you could code your own hammer and mod, and just blast a hole in the wall or youre foot... lol

Carve is bad idea for wall holes, clip and then use vertex manipulation to make your hole.

Vertex manipulation isn't necessary here. It'll probably take more time and is harder for beginners to use. You'd rather copy and resize some brushes. Fast, easy, and does the job well.

Oh, and when someone finds a program that creates levels based on mind-reading, contact me please.

yup, and dont carve, clip.

Treat Hammer like a little kid. You shouldn't be fighting it, but you can't trust it too much because it doesn't know anything.

once you get into the flow of mapping you will be able to use the "seperate brush" method. simply create every brush individually.

Clip works fine if you know what you're doing with it. However for beginners, yes, I suggest the seperate brush method.

theres the carve.. to do it u have to first make the wall.. then take anotehr brush, and put it in the wall.. (for whatever u want the hole to be)
then with the second brush (the "hole" brush) selected, press control+c
then delete it or move it somewhere else.. and ull see the hole in the wall

Yes, but more experienced mappers will highly recommend you not to use the carve tool. This may seem strange at first, but once you get to work with bigger and more complex maps, you'll see that clipping, vertex manipulating and especially, the habit to create shapes from individual brushes rather than with carving or hollowing, gives you much more control over the map and makes it easier to maintain.

A problem with carving is that with nearly any shape more complex than a cube, you often get vertexes not aligned to the grid. During the compile process, these vertexes are aligned to the grid. This can cause really thin leaks in your level. Or, should you have a brush behind this carved brush, it'll add several w_poly's, and it decreases compiling time somewhat.
So, really, individual brushes combined with clipping or VM'ing is much better...
