I got some NEWB questions about CS mapping. I learned making rooms by carving..and right now i m making some zigzag hallways in my map. Which brings me to my questions: :)

1.) Do leaks in my hallway REALLY matter? I mean i m really going to stick my whole map in a big box, making it a room. And can u have things floating in a map? like my whole map in a huge box.

2.) Is there a limit to how big a map can be?

3.) Is there a faster more efficient way of making rooms connect without carving? :badass:

4.) Are these too many questions?

Thanks in Advance! :D

Yes there are limits and incasing the map in a big box isn't a good idea

1. Really bad idea. This confuses HL and you'll get odd lighting and poor framerates.

2. Yep. Zoom out all the way, the gridlines stop :)

3. No. There's a better way though - make four brushes, one for each wall :)

4. Nope, feel free to ask more ;)

all the questions got answered but...
carving out anything is not a very good idea, it creates leaks and invalid structures. Use the clip tool instead.

What I do to make rooms is to make individual brushes for walls, ceiling and floor... It may seem harder but ends up being easier and you have more control about what you?re doing.
If you are connecting two rooms with the same floor and ceiling style you can do 2 things:
-Make a big room and creating walls to separate them (the differences in rendering speed should be minimal).
-Make the floors, walls and ceiling separated and add a little floor, ceiling and walls for the doorway (a little harder, but you can get better looking results).
You can have floating brushes in your map, of course... They will cast shadows (unless they are brush entities) and behave as real brushes and so on. They may look strange (I mean, unrealistic) but there?s nothing bad about it, just be imaginative.
One thing you can?t do is to have point entities like items, weapons and monsters floating in the air. They must be over brushes or func_brushes (monsters behave strange with elevators and trains)... If you need to do some floating thing you could make a floating func_wall entity, texture it in blue and make it invisible (I don?t know if a Func_illusionary would do the trick).
And make as much questions as you want, it?s the way we all learn.

All the half-life maps are exactly as wide as the grid.
Wonder what the compile time is on THAT...

I find that by building a flat brush for the floor and leaving it at that helps me get a visual for my floor layout. Once I've duplicated the original, moved them to where I want them, then I go back and add walls. Then all you have to do is group your floor, raise it to ceiling level and there you have it. I also like to carve cubes to make rooms, problem with that is if you decide to change the room size becuase you had a new idea, then floor/ceiling thickness changes too.

Ignore these dumbasses from my school. Sorry. Looks like they're worse off since they don't even map, they just seem to abuse people who to
