I could've done a much better one. If I get some better ideas till tomorow I'll remap it.

PaLO, what do you mean by prop specs? Dimensions, w-polys, #textures?...not sure what you mean. Whatever y'all want to do for judging is fine with me. Regardless, I agree the easiest way to make them accessable--for judging or otherwise--is to throw them in the map vault under unfinished.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-26 06:27:26 UTC Post #69461
Exactly what it says on the tin: Map > Map Info, go there in hammer and take a lil' screen shot of it, so teh judges can compare the amount of detail, and there is a record of the prop/prefab's info.

Just a thought, and it's a bit late to insist on it, but it may be interesting for the judges to see (without having to open it in hammer) how the prop has been made.

I still haven't made mine yet lol, good thing we have till 9pm =/
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-26 06:47:22 UTC Post #69465
Check. I never saw that in hammer before. 9pm GMT it is.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-26 06:51:31 UTC Post #69468
Map Info? Is that Hammer 3.5? Couse mine is 3.4 and there's no such thing.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-26 06:57:47 UTC Post #69471
In mine, it's Map >Show Information. I have 3.4 too.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-26 07:02:18 UTC Post #69472
Yeah, 'Map Info' doesn't exist, I just have an incredibly bad memory.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-26 07:12:30 UTC Post #69480
You were right too, when you pull it up, the dialog box says 'Map Information'.

Holy shit! Man, would you believe that I was going for a computer as well? That's very funny - we all think the computer is the most complicated and most beautyfull object in our existance... We have to get a live, man...
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-27 03:23:07 UTC Post #69680
Okay:

Gold: PTS with his Nazi Eagle.

I just had to put this first as it was almost perfect and so detailed. It would've been a good idea to tie the entire eagle to a func_wall, though, to prevent face splitting and ease up on VIS doing needless calculations. Also, the Swastika should've been rotated forty-five degrees, Google for reference pics and you'll see what I mean.

Silver: rowleybob's open computer.

If it'd been slightly more to scale, had whirring fan noises, no big green random things (lights? They're already on the texture) on the keyboard, and a better monitor image (that really let it down), this would probably have won. Pity you couldn't use stuff, but hey, y'can't have everything. Really well-made with superb attention to detail.

Bronze: Peace and LOve's Playboymachine.

This was a really nice neat little computer on a well-made desk, but it was kinda missing something. Perfectly to scale, and, er, nice and stuff, but not as impressive as bob's little fans.

Let's have another, I rushed that PC so badly it isn't even funny.
I had a little CD tray that opened when you tweaked the keyboard, and a little reefer with smoke floating up, but I got errors here and there and not having the time to fix them I just deleted shizzle and compiled it.

I'd like to check out the winning and 2nd place entries to see what beat my wonderful homage to internet pr0n. =)

And seeing as tehre were only three entires, I lost kinda bad, huh :P

What's the next compo, perhaps another useful 'fab that peeps could use, what about a large room, decorated and fully functioning with lights, and detail, teh location is your choice, the theme is your choice, any textures, but must be wad included.
The size limit is 400 units by 320 (that's 25 x 20 in the 16 unit grid size)

Sound good?

Perhaps we should even have to include our entries for this compo somewhere in this new one :D

lemme know your thoughts, if it's all good and we get replies by 9pm the compo will be due in next wednesday 9pm gmt! :P

If we can have Andy or SlayerA do it that's be great, I say mods should judge if they have the time, until some reliable and honest mappers can take the time to judge.

Thanks for doing this one 7th.

Room decoration? Sounds good. But if we four make someting there's noone to judge. 7th, would you be so good as to mail Andy or some other moderator asking for help with this one?

As we're going to start another competition then we have to pick the rules. Here I'm making a collection of all proposed and my own:

1. Room size is no more than 400 X 320 height is 256
2. Custom textures, sprites and sounds allowed
3. No models (we might have to talk about this one)
4. The room doesn't have to represent a box
5. No polylimit (except for the engine-crashing count)

1. Right
2. Good
3. Fine
4. Good
5. Hehe, good-o
LOL 3rd place outa 3 entries haha N000000B!

No models means no monsters, right?
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-27 07:43:35 UTC Post #69752
What are you implying?
I'm implying alot of teh reg's have a lack of unbiasedness (man I spent ages trying to think of the right word for that, but all the weed has taken it's toll...)

1. Right
2. Good
3. No Talking, we're allowed models :D
4. Good
5. I say a poly limit must be applied, other wise the maps may get out of control, 1500 w poly limit, 7000 e poly, sound good? I mena, those are BIG lol
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-27 07:46:59 UTC Post #69754
Change of heart, 2000 w poly, 8000 e poly, it 'll interesting if we can go nuts, but there has to be a limit on what is created, and how much sh*t we cram into it... or we may spend too much time on it and forget about teh Real World compo :P
Just so the entries can be judged on their sticking to teh rules.

As for the models, I think we should be allowed to use whatever we want, and the rooms have to have some kind of purpose, not just static nonsense. Whether it be a computer room, or a torture chamber, something must be happening or can be triggered etc..

The rest is undefined and up to teh discretion of the mapper.

All Agreed?
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-27 07:59:58 UTC Post #69764
2000? That's ridiculous. 1500's alright.

I don't think we should be allowed custom models.
Seventh-Monkey Seventh-MonkeyPretty nifty
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-27 08:05:53 UTC Post #69766
:( lol

Well, I can agree with 1500 (2000 was my attempt to compromise, gald you agree it's rather high - not that bad though, considering it's just an SP room)

But the models, argh, I really LOve to use models, so I'm never gonna agree with this, but yes, models have no place in a Hammer Mappign Comp, as we haven't made them, and they show none of our work, but what if we made the models our selves?

I just had an idea for the next comp, everyone gets a certain model/prefab, and we have to make a scene around/based on it, see what our imaginations can do.

Posted 20 years ago2004-10-27 08:39:16 UTC Post #69772
PaLO, seems like you're not getting it right. 7th said no custom models, wich means we could use the stabdart ones. And 2000 is virtually the game-crashing limit (unless you've got a very stable system and some antifreeze programs).

Trapt, when you're not keen in mapping then I'll be happy to have you as a judge. And since no one else is willing I guess you are hired.

There are no models in HalfLife...

None that are worth a shit in the bushes for anyway...

What was your reasoning for not having models?

And which models do you think we should be allowed to use?

(not being argumentative, just want it all to be clear seeing as we're making up the rules as we go along :P )

I guess trapt is the judge of our second comp. What do you think, new judge each compo, only one judge for each? Could be interesting..

You just can't use then for anything good. May be just these book and soda can ones.

There you go, if we can't use custom models I say we can't use any models.

Solves any problems in teh future.

So are we agreed? Shall the compo commence tonight at 9pm, and finish in a weeks time?

I guess you never heard of bodygroups? I've seen someone using models in a very handy way... There are some that are worth a look... and there's more than just soda and books in there, I guarantee you.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-27 10:38:52 UTC Post #69826
Yeah for sure, but they are 6 years old, and generically ugly, I'd rather not have the option to use those models if I can't use custom models, which are so much nicer to look at.

I never doubted that there weren't models in HL, just not the kind I'd probably be inclined to use.

What is this "special way" you speak of? :D
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-27 10:44:11 UTC Post #69829
Sure, I'd rather have custom ones, but I'd also rather have custom textures, custom 'almost everything'...

This 'special way' means, using the right model in the right place. I was amazed that those models were actually from original HL, I hadn't really expected them. Not because they were of such good quality, but good enough, and I haven't seen them being used a lot.

So in situations you can't use custom models, it doesn't mean you should completely throw away the use of prop models... in my opinion.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-27 10:49:30 UTC Post #69830
Yeah, point made and taken, but for such a small compo like this, I feel that rather than say we aren't allowed custom models (remember, I'm a CS mapper, I have virtually no experience with teh ins and outs of HL, all teh models hidden away that were used once, or not even used in the game), I think we should either use models, or not use models.
To differentiate between custom and not, is pretty petty imho, but I still don't know why, or understand the reason for not having custom models?
They won't make the file size that much bigger, and the only add to teh beauty of teh map.

We can use custom textures and sounds... so why not models... you get where I'm coming from?
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-27 13:41:10 UTC Post #69877
Fine, if you feel that strongly I'll go with no models at all. It's a mapping competition!

This is completely uninfluenced by my inability to model :) Sounds and textures are easy for anybody to do to a fair level, but modelling's more complicated, more of an art in its own.
