Help with Carving: Don't do it.

Tick 'Don't Run The Game' when compilling and load the map manually through the console.

What do you mean don't do it?
Then how do you make the shapes you want in hammer?

(as for the gamedate.txt error... I was getting that too)
When you compile (F9) click the checkbox at the bottom about not running the game when finished.
Make sure your .bsp file is saved in the game directory <maps> folder of the game you're making the map for.
Start that game...
type ~ to open the console
then in the cosole type "map <mapname>"

I suck at this too but I'm learning as I go.
This is day 2 for me.

Carving isn't needed for making maps. It's quite dysfunctional and I recommend using the clip tool or Vertex manipulation instead.

How bout Half Life 2? Is there still a console? If there is I cant open it. :zonked:

Yes, it has a console.(You mean in hl2 right? Not in sdk)
Do the same thing you did to hl1 to ''short cut propierties''(whatever it is) write -console

So do you mean the "~" key? So in the actuel game you press it? Which Part?
Does it matter?

Activating Console:

If you created a shortcut to the desktop when you installed Half-Life 2, right click on the icon and go to Properties. At the end of the "Target:" command line, just add in "-console" and run Half-Life 2 from there instead of double clicking it on the Steam panel. However, I bought the CD instead of pre-ordering it on Steam so I'm not sure if Steam Purchasers had a chance to put it on their desktop or not.

You can also activate console and developer under Options in one of the submenus under 'Advanced'.

Blackravent,
Open the game and go into options.
I believe there is an option to block the developer console so you don't open it during play.

Carving is a "no-no" if you're on Day 2... even Day 6 or 7. Day 400, maybe, but hopefully, by then, you'll have enough skills to not need it. If you're familiar with art programs, like Illustrator or CorelDraw, then Hammer will seem backwater to you. You can't "knock-out" a shape from another in Hammer, which is what carving is. You can't "unite", "subtract", "exclude", and all those other great functions that make those programs easy.

Here's the tutorials you need

Clipping tool instruction
Vertex Manipulation
Vertex Manipulation2

Read all three tutorials before you start, but practice with the clipping tool before you get to the Vertex stuff.

I disagree about not carving, guys. I've developed a technique I call Non-Destructive/Firewall Carving, and it takes care of most carving problems one can come across. I'll write a tutorial on it soon, but it really is very simple and it saves your brushes from becoming fragmented to heck.
