IIS 6.0 is not 'silly' its a damn good webserver if ya ask me, your jus slating it cause its made by windows arnt ya 
The benifits of my own webserver is i can support any language, theres no bars on security settings or dir permissions and it can support unlimited concurent connections, and i dont have any caps on downloads from the site

my website is hosted on servers at streamline.net. its great, ?40 a year and i get unlimited webspace, unlimited bandwidth (how the hell that would work i dont know) and 5 mysql databases. they have loads of packages. oh and my domain name was free with the host!
for websites i make for other people, i use a comapny called web-mania. for ?20 a year you get 500mb of webspace and only one sql dbase, which is plently adequate for their requirments

Freewebs...Yes I am aware it sucks with a thousand passions but until time has passed there is no way I can afford 10 MB and hosting at the same time.

You need to get a webserver. They come in many different forms and flavours, but I personally recommend Apache, which is completely free and is what I'm using to host ZLDB.be. If you hop on IRC I'll help you set it up when I have time, seeing as how the documentation is harder to understand than it should be.
