Hey, I had a question about using music that's not yours in your mods. I currently want to use a few of those "big name" songs in my maps, but I've heard that that's illegal, and I could get in a lot of shit for doing so, even if I credit the artist.

What is the general concensus here of using big name music (ex. Linkin Park, The Prodigy, etc) in your maps? Should I just use the ones that came with Half-Life only? Is there a law I don't know about? Thanks.

If you're playing by the book, United States Copyright governs that distributing copyright content without the author's permission is illegal.

However, there are millions of people participating in online music sharing. Only a select few people have been targeted for the offenses, and the government seems focused on going after people redistributing movies instead. While it's technically illegal, the chances of them targeting you for the offense would be unlikely.

Just take the beat, and modify it a little.

Without the lyrics or haivng the "same" beat, there is no trouble. ;)

Thanks Rabid. Oh and Chow, I would think that modifying someone's song and passing it off as my own would piss them off even more than just saying "Yep, these guys made this song and I used it because I think it rocks..."

Then make your own beat totally. Just make it sound similar. But not at all the same. (If that makes sense)

Go to google, search for something like... e.g. crazy music download and look through a few sites until you find some free music that sounds cool...

I searched for scary noises and got hundreds and it was perfect for my old hl1 scary map :)

Slayer!11!!!1!1

I'd stick with HL music. I'd be deterred if some mod had music I didn't particularly like. I prefer listening to my own music anyway.

Or give them instructions to change the wav files to music they like and have them name it something particular? ;)

What's wrong with the HL CD music? It fits the game, but make sure you tell people that you're using it - some people like their mp3's in the background while playing hl, and not everyone puts in the hl cd to get it to work...

if you're going to use music like that in a mod, its best to have it instrumental. lyrics just get in the way.

Yeah, I'm not using Linkin Park. If I do, it might be 1 song, with no lyrics, that has never been played on the radio.

No lyrics, and if there is, it would be maybe a phrase at most.

My plan is to have different music play based on what path you decide to go.

ex. Crazy rock for those who run in guns blazing, sweet chillin' techno for those who sneak around.

Oh and yeah, I d/l'd FruityLoops a month ago, it's just a "trial version" tho so I can't save my work. Lame.

Lots of good cinematic music for half-life..
Just register, download, convert to wav, and then convert to 8-bit mono.

A Friend of mine made a little romantic comedy on 8mm for a class project, and he wanted to use 'Goodbye to you' by Scandal as the theme. For shits, he contacted the label and asked for permission to use the track in the film. Their answer was 'sure, but you'll need to pay us $3000.00.'

The moral of the story If you like a song, and it fits with your map, just use it. I seriously doubt they would ever find out.

Or If you want to stay on the level, just use IEMC's method to change the music a little bit, then your covered. Big Ad companies routinely do this--take some catchy, popular tune, change it like 15%, and presto!
