How would you get the ambient_generic to play a sound at a random time? i didnt see any options for it in the properties.

You can't play it randomly in HL1.

You can, actually, if you use an env_beam/_laser, give multiple entities the target name, and tick "random strike". Try looking it up on the VERC and our Entity Guide.

i know they had random sounds playing in "Surface Tension" on HL1. like the artillery, the planes, the shooting and all those other random sounds that would play to make it sound like a combat zone. i wanted to know how they did that.

chow, it's the only way to produce randomness, to my knowledge.
