4GB of RAM is completely useless. Almost all 32-bit motherboards have 4 slots and 1GB modules are hard to find. 9800XT is a good card, but not great. And Pentium 4 3.2's usually suck (if you are talkin about the Northwood series). 3.0's are much better overclocking-wise. If you are talking about the Prescott series then it's a good overclocker but a generally crap chip.

oh yeah, and by the way, 4 gigs is completely usefull to me, I render the shit out of some 3D graphics using such soft ware as Lightwave, Mya, 3DS max, poser.......so I need the extra storage

For some reason I think you are full of BS. You say you have 4gb of RAM, then when I say how stupid your decision to get that bloated amount of RAM is, you say that you "need" it, then you call me an idiot for pointing out your own stupidity. Rendering does require lots of RAM, but someone of your intelligence could never construct anything that requires more than 128mb of memory.

768MB runs fine for me, I would go ahead jump that last 256MB to 1GB, but I don't think it matter that much.

Oh btw Odin, 6 CCFL's!? you need a monster of a PSU for that, which a doubt you have. Rounded cable's, bad data transfer. DFI LanParty = trash (except from the NF2, NF3 and NF4 series). Your the kind of guy that buys tons of shiny lights and doesn't know what to do with them. As for my case layout:

2 black delta 80mm intake fans
2 black delta 80mm outtake fans
1 PSU fan (my PSU has superior heatsinkage)
1 blue CCFL

I have minimal lightning provided by my CCFL, and my powerful (but noisy) delta's are overvolted and provide excellent airflow. All excess cables are hidden behind the mobo and my ribbon IDE cables are packed in a neat method. My waterchiller's 1/2 tygon tubing goes through the 2 holes neatly cut in my sidepanel, and all of the pump, waterchiller refrigeration kit, res/evap are in an insulated container sitting in a metal box under my desk. Meanwhile my modded Mach II sits underneath my small, but nice PC-65 case :) Beat that! I need to take a pic at some point.

500w is nothing. My modded PCP&C puts out a peak of 750w. Eat that. Anyway, I'm stopping this little fight now. You can continue if you wish, but that will make you look like the kid. What stepping/week/revision/ecode is your P4? M0 stepping's are pretty nice if you are using a Northwood. You can tell if they are M0's simply by looking under the PCB. They have 30 caps like Gallantin's, and are in fact rejected P4EE's with no L3 cache. If you have a Preshott, then I don't have any clue since I haven't used a Preshott ever (except from a Engineer's Sample E0 S775 recently).

Athlon XP 3200+
1 GB PC3200 DDR
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
200 MB Seagate SATA HDD
17" LCD

But no one should envy me. I can't run any 3D game or even an OpenGL screensaver. The computer crashes within minutes of running these apps. Heck, I can't even run the original HL on this machine.

However, it cured my gaming addiction. There goes my two days worth of salary. Oh well.

satch: have you formatted, tried a NIX live-CD, or have you already determined it to be a hardware problem?

I'll post Source benchmarks on the laptop tommorow or the day after (probably the day after, doubt I'll be able to sort it all in a couple of hours tommorow evening).

PS: my ?28 Q-tec PSU nominally provides 650W. That's not all that matters, y'know.

The PSU is often the most ignored and underpowered part in most systems.

Try to stick with the main quality distribitors; Antec, Cooler Master, and PC Power & Cooling.

satch: have you formatted, tried a NIX live-CD, or have you already determined it to be a hardware problem?
I brought my computer to my friend's house over the weekend, and he solved the problem (rebooting during Far Cry) by turning off dual-channel mode for the PC3200.

I can't explain it, but I don't care. As long as HL2 runs, I am happy.

Still tweaking the timing for those PC3200. Probably have to relax the timing to 2-3-3-8. Also, I am considering tweaking the voltage to a bit higher. Any ideas?

The computer reboots a lot less frequently, but it still happens every now and then.

No more rebooting. I just needed to downgrade the FSB speed from 200 MHz to 166 MHz to accommodate the Kingston PC3200 memory.

Far Cry demo loop has been running all day so far without a problem.

And I woke up at 3 am this morning and played Half-Life 2 until my eyes are blood-shot. HL2 played as smoothly as HL1 on my old machine, with framerates around 80-150 fps.

How can life be so sweet?
