I got the idea for such a compo, while watching the Half-Life Speed run from Speeddemosarchive.

It's pretty simple.
To win this compo, you just have to finish a chapter in Half-Life as fast as you can and film it all.

The first chapter: Anomalous materials
You have to finish it till' the room with the 2 scientists just before entering the test chamber.

My time is 2:28.
Video here (DivX 6.1 required)

The winner of this chapter chooses the next chapter! :)

Software:
Fraps - great app for filming.
Wax - Since fraps can only film 30 secs per video - you'll need some video editing software to pull it all together. Windows movie maker is good, but if ya dont have it, Wax is great too.

Go into your console and type "record <demoname>" then when you want to stop recording type "stop". the demo can be played back via "playdemo <demoname>" and it is stored in your Valve folder.

bad idea,you have to record the video with a full version of a video recorder.Fraps demo is only for free...unless you get it from bit torrent :quizzical: Then you have to compress your video in divx and bla bla...
bad idea...and its old..I know a video which a guy finished the hl1 in 40min.But they are pretty old.

Also, you need to specify an exact start and stop point. I suggest:

The record starts when you pass the main doors in Anom. Matt.
The record ends when you pass the small door that leads to the area with the two sci's, right before entering the test chamber. Also, levelchanges are not counter, so try to edit those our.

Do you agree, Daubster? With this in mind, you might want to retry your record. :)

Yea, I agree.. And I think that you can cut out 5 secs for levelchanges from your video, if ya want.. :)
And record demo files instead of filming it, it's really fast, doesn't use up any extra memory and takes up less space.

I've just recorded a demo, didn't beat my own record.. (2:36)

Yer fast, Muzzleh... :nuts:

I guess you could jump from the HEV platform back up to that console, and with the elevator ladder you could jump down and catch it just before you hit the ground. At least that's what I remember from another HL speedrun I saw once.
Not that I'll ever do it that fast... ;)

Well, I guess you were faster than me, Muzz..
Although you have to start in the room before the doors open and you must get in the room with the scientists, not just open the door..
I'd give ya a 3-4 second penalty, although that wouldn't change anything.. :)
And in the room with the 3 scis - you can easily get 1 scientist close enough to the door to get it opened and save a couple a' seconds..
Anywho - great work.

More speed runs, please! I wouldn't want Muzz to win by default.. ;)

I thought we both agreed on the fact that the record start as soon as you pass the main doors, and the record end as soon as you enter the room with the sci's. Or:

The record starts immediately at level start (c1a0)
The record ends at the moment you enter the room with sci's.

And yes, i removed the changelevels. I suggest you do the same. Alltough it might be hard for you.

I say we use Fraps for capturing and save the movie as an wmv file. I know crappy quality, but at least filesize is very small. Mine was only 3.6 MB.

At first i planned to make a DivX avi, but that didn't work. So thats why i now use wmv.

OOh, Ill try this when I get home. Muzz a suggestion.. why dont you bunny hop? Also any NPC can open a door, you just gotta push them to the scanners or doors.

I know there was no longjump module, but in almost every Speed run I've seen they Bunny hop and strafe to gain speed. I saw you moving the African American Scientist, and I just thought I would mention that it could have been done faster - As I have seen in other speed runs, but good job none-the-less.

I got the first one to 1:44, but didnt get a recorder on it cause I was late to do it :( , other one is too hard cause I dont remember where to go, and you gotta shoot everyone :(

like, "valve presents 'Source' - the sequel to half life"
for a limited time only it comes bundled with 'counter-strike 2' and 'day of defeat: the next one that looks all nice in the new engine' dont forget to get the expansion 'Source: the official expansion pack boy we need a different name for this' when it comes out!
now with HDR - high demand rendering - the really really big resource muncher! buy a $700 video card today and another one next year when the first becomes obsolete!

cant do the new chapter, no save files, no weapons, no suit, im not playing through again to get to that chapter, and cheats dont work for some reason

Meh, forgot about that.

Ok, lets change the rules a bit:
  • Cheats allowed (use of impulse 101 and longjump)
  • thats all.
Just get through the chapter as soon as you can. Feel free to pwn any enemies you encounter, as long as you do it fast!

To get cheats working:
  • Open the console and type: sv_cheats 1
  • Restart the map.
  • Open the console and type: impulse 101

You only did half of Questionable Ethics, the first two maps. You gotta run through the whole chapter until you reach the next chapter, which is Surface Tention.
