Straght down to business; I dont have my main comp up and running at the moment but I am considering downloading World Craft onto this comp to do this map.

The idea is very simple; I make four large hollow blocks and connect them at the top and bottom of them. Then I cut the map into four and send 1 peice to each person who wants to sign up (I need 3 people to sign, 4 maps parts and I am making one).

The simple idea is that you have to map what ever you like to connect the two ways in and out of your quater, then when they are all done I connect all the maps and bingo, we have a very quick and simple community single player map.

I have a few thoughts to put to you; Should we make this for Opposing Force (My preference because it has more things we could use) or HL1.

Each quater of the map will have a theme, be it fire, water or whatever, you choose (if you sign up and get accepted as one of the lucky 3). The enemies in your map must fit your theme, I dont want this to turn into one big grunt fest. EG if you use water your monsters should be water orientated (Itch, barnicle, bullsquid etc.) Fire and fire monsters (Controllers, gargs etc.) Of course you can use other monsters, but you should try and stick to the theme.

So; what I need to know.
  • What do you guys think?
  • Is this worth doing IYO?
  • Would you sign up?
  • And finally if I do do this, should it be HL1 or Opposing Force?
Personally I think we should do it in Opposing Force, because there are more monsters and entities to put to use.

Reminds me of what Dr. Glass tried on the Snarkpit - the Mosaic Map. As far as I know the succes rate of such projects is fairly low so sticking with a small motivated team and keeping the map small in terms of time is best, methinks.

I'd say, go with HL. Less entities, but more people who can play. Also, it keeps you more focussed, keeps things smaller so more 'change of survival', hehe. :P

I wouldn't sign up though, got other things to do (and you know what ;)).

Yeah I know :)

This project is small, each person would only do 1/4 of a map.

OK, I am going to go ahead and make this.

Things you need to know:
  • This will be for Opposing force, so you will need a copy of opposing force and the latest FDG (link below) in order to map and play this.
http://dev.valve-erc.com/projects/fgd/documents/103463128026140000/attached/halflife-op4-fgd_3x.zip
  • I need 3 people willing to work on this, each will recive one quater of the map in a large box to map out your own theme. This is single player so dont go crazy with the R_speeds, but you do have some freedom.
  • YOU CANNOT BUILD BRUSHES THAT CONNECT WITH THE OUTER BOX! This is mainly to save of vis and brush cutting but also because it fits the theme, you can build walls and such to within one unit of the walls though (so no real dampener there).
  • Each quater will have a theme that you have to stick too, EG Water, Fire, energy etc. So if you pick the water area for example, you HAVE to incorperate water obsticles and water enemies into your quater, you are not limited to only these but you have to have them at least somwhere in your map. This is to flesh the map out a bit and also to stop it turning into a four way grunt fest.
  • There will be a weapons strip after every quater, so remember that you need to re equip your character with weapons / health / armour at the start of your box.
Thats it, well who is interested? I am already working on my quater, I have decided to do water. So the spaces left are; Energy, Fire and Mechanical.

Further details on each theme;

Enemies you should try to include / theme information:

Fire: Alien Controllers, gargantua's, zombies (because zombies LOVE fire) and hapless civillians for toasting.

The fire theme should have various fire obsticles steam should also be used if possible, perhaps a rocket engine and a tenticle enemy?

Water: Bullsquids, Pit Drones, Headcrabs, Itchies, barnicles and zombies (because zombies love water).

The water are will feature (I know this because I am doing it) various water hazards, a lot of swimming and a touch of horror.

Energy: Alien Slaves, Shock Troopers, Voltigores, hound eyes.

The energy theme can be like anything you want, I had in mind somthing like a laser maze, with floating platforms and strange machines with lots of pretty beam effects.

Mechanical: Grunts, Alien Grunts, turrets (tanks?), trip mines and so on.

The theme I had in mind was somthing like a large factory area with lots of moving noisey machinery with crushes, cutter, convayorbelts and so on.

Just another note to say that you are NOT restricted to using just those enemies in your quater if you sign up, those are just the enemies that fit the theme, you dont HAVE to use any of them but it is reccomended.

So common then, whos interested?

I want to try! Pick me,pick me. Opfor is better.

Edit:

WHAT? I can't build stuff that touch the outer box? This sucks. I can already see how this will turn out- many floating objects in a big box.

Edit #2:
The mechinery sounds nice. If I wont be able to do that then fire is good enough for me too. I can't see how will it reduce the poly count if all the artitecture wont touch the box. More visible faces you know... nulling wont fix all the problems that it will cause.

Edit #3:
On second thought I think that spirit is better then both. The mechinery area will need it. After all it will be easier to make working mechines with the move with option.

Edit #4:
I have an idea for anyone whos doing the energy part- Place trigger_pushs in many places so you'll fight usally during you float.

Edit #5:
Shit I love all the ideas! I prefer the mechinery(I just really like the idea and the ideas I have for it), then water, then fire(You'll need someone who can make terrain thats not too fancy(I know how) and costum textures) and the last is energy.(although it's still a very cool idea I'm just not such a big fan of high technological lazery stuff)

Edit #6:
I have another idea for the energy section- Make the goal of that section to reach the top of the room and destroy the core!

Edit #7:
I finally decided I'll make the mechinery area. Can I use some of Quake2's textures they suit me well.

Edit #8:

Oooo... lots of edits! Maybe I'm starting to abuse it. :

Edit #9:

Yeah I'm certinly abusing it! :P One more thing- Can I make a mod with four areas like these ones after I'll finish this map?

Bloody hell thats a lot of edits, I think its a new record.

After you have done your part, you can make whatever you like.

One thing though, I am not to keen on custom content, rather making full use of the availble content.

Ok, I will allow brushes to touch the edges but please dont go mad with it, remember that all the boxes will be linked so if you have a mass of triangles touching one box, the splits could work their way into the others aswell.

Elon, your in. You can do whichever part you like, alright people, only Energy (My first choice) and fire left... actually, I think I will let the others get picked and then I will do the remaining one. So if you want to sign you can do either fire water or energy. Keep em comming.

Cool, thanks. I'll send you the idea for my layout, I want to see if it's legal.
