Finally myself and by brother (Exos) have finished our recreation of the popular cs xbox map cs_miami. Its totally revamped, but keeping the original gameplay. Alot of time and effort went into this. Please review it in the map vault :) Completed maps :)

Why don't you set a link to that map? ;)

that would be too much trouble, he wants you to actually seek the map out

What's the point of these threads?
Bunch of advertising <censored>.

EDIT: The map looks nice judging from the screenshot.

It looks quite good but I just see HL2 in it...When are people going to use custom content!?

Tip: Don't make threads like these or it makes you look arrogant..."Look at teh best map evar!" Better than all of you puht tg3ther...

The yet unfinished works! Whats the use of this thread if you can comment on the map through the vault.

What do you mean elon? Commenting is on for the completed map vault version.

What's wrong with starting a thread for this? It'll get much more attention than in the map vault and at least here you can format posts properly...

As for the map, from the screenshots it looks interesting. The outside certainly has some unique parts to it, and that's a good thing to make the map stand out.
It does look a bit rough at some places though, caused by some blocky brushwork. Most indoor area's feel a bit empty - as if the area's are too large, too much repetetive things going on (all those computers and light fixtures on a row) while the floors and walls are otherwise quite empty. Carefully placed props could break it up a bit but I think those area's should be made a little more compact. They're a bit darkish for office rooms too, I think.

I'll take a run through this to give some more specific feedback.

I agree with you Captain P. It is a bit empty in certain spots, but I had to leave it so it matched the map layout of the original. Extra cover could change the gameplay. Thanks for the honest remarks. Perhaps I could find a way to make it more complex without changing gameplay.

Why match the originals map layout exactly? You're working with a different engine which allows more and sometimes different things. Besides, changing things could improve them (though I definitely agree that's not an automatic result).

Well, for the walls, using some paintings and such could help, and having some papers or other small props lying around on the floors might do the trick...

I really do hate to nit-pick but this requires some attention.

Thanx for the attention, BUT im in free look mode to get a better view of the map to show more in the picture. That is not visible on any part of the map you can get to normally.
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-30 02:05:30 UTC Post #171552
I havent played the map yet, but I can see in the outside screenshot that there's one of those almost-invisible barriers, with 4 of these props >> /-
Obviously, a normal person could walk between them. I've seen this in other CS maps (de_spirits for example) and I cant say I like it. There are a bunch of fence props for this game that people can use, or putting a series of wrecked vehicles on fire like in "Max Payne".
I'll add something else when I check the whole map, it looks good.

It's true. One has to model it, UVMap it and skin it :[

Custom Materials are not so hard.

That isn't true either, Strider. Not if you want some good materials as opposed to 'programmers art'. ;)

Well, technically it's pretty easy to compile a model or material and personally I find creating meshes not that hard either, but it's the texture art that keeps me back the most so far.

There are more than enough tutorials and free texture sites floating around the internet. Custom Materials really aren't very difficult, far less than custom models anyway.

Yeah, I'm with CP. The modelling process is easy enough, it's creating the actual textures where I get held up. (Which is usually why I leave it to a skinning artist, too.)

World textures, though, are probably much simpler.

Free texture sites, for the most part, suck. Immensly. Sometimes you get lucky, but most of the time, for Source related stuff, you don't.

The map looks awesome, I think you are just a touch little too optimistic about the map, posting it as a beta and asking for people opinions on what could be made better and beta testing wouldnt of hurt the map any. On the other hand the map looks excellent, although I havnt had a chance to play it yet (my computer is still broken) I look foward to.

I think it was an excellent idea to port a map from a console version to the PC version, people should do more of it. Are there any other maps for CS Xbox that would be good to convert?
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-30 11:29:47 UTC Post #171599
You know its funny you would mention custom materials and models. I actually just started learning XSI and creating custom textures. I think its kind of annoying to get the lighting and bump mapping right on textures. So far I have taken other reference textures from Valve and used their attributes on mine for practice. I plan for my next map (way in the future) to be all custom materials, and a few custom models.

BTW thanks for the honest opinions :)

Tycell: I would say de_Vostok would be another cool port from csXbox to Source. I dont think that will be my next map though.

I wish someone would actually play this map :( Its optimized very well. By yourself the average FPS is 100, and with about 20 bots its 85-45. I took advantage of every optimization technique here. If it was with players and no bots, the FPS would be constantly over 100. Some areas 170!
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-30 15:14:20 UTC Post #171629
Framerates depend on the user's hardware, but it's a good thing you've optimized. I doubt I'll get more than 60 fps. It doesnt really matter since my screen can only display 40 fps. I'm downloading it now.
