GOD DAMN! Leave it to Valve to make revolutionary gameplay advances! (ALthough PREY did this before, not with a gun, but they must of got the idea from them.)
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-18 16:17:40 UTC Post #190677
Ah glad someone made a thread about this.
I thought about this earlier and thought well what happens when a player makes a portal on a wall where there is nothing but the void behind it...

I'm guessing you just end up on the opposite side...Realistic...

I am just speechless, that is incredible. :o

an impressive addition to the source engine, but you could never put that gun in a game, its too open to exploitation in the same way as red factions 'destroy anything'. Also shameless motion blur, use real footage ya bastards!

Its for a puzzle game called 'Portal' thats coming out / you have to buy with Episode 2.

I agree with Jobabob. It couldn't really be implemented into a game as it would just leave the game completely open and non linear. Players would escape out of maps and it would probably end up ruining game play in the long term.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-18 17:18:38 UTC Post #190688
I dont know what this talk is about: "Going in the void, and escaping the map". IF you watched the video, you would see it requires you to create an entrance and an exit WITHIN world geometry. There is no way to get out of the map. And how could one make such an assumption with just a video anyway?

Also, is this a seperate game, or just a part of Episode 2?

Cool! Someone code this for HL1! NOW! :P

It keeps saying "Attempting to reconnect" after saying "Playing" for me :nervous:

Its a mod made by valve thats being released with episode 2 along with Team Fortress 2
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-18 19:06:21 UTC Post #190712
it could work as a multiplayer fun mod, but itd still be so comically exploitable, just because it looks simple doesnt mean its not immensly comiplicated coding and liable to break
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-18 20:02:10 UTC Post #190724
Have to break it to ya, but "portals" where used in Quake 3.

Not too new :P
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-18 21:08:53 UTC Post #190729
Xyos : I mean, in Half-Life 2 say, there are plenty of places you can see, but you can't get too.
Now if you could just create a portal say half way up a building that you can see, but not reach by normal means, then you'd just be breaking the game play and escaping the map, and basically be runing around in the backstage of a map.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-18 21:36:16 UTC Post #190730
Thats where the new coding for portals comes in G_KID. Dont forget they have software enginners of the highest calibur working with Valve. I would suspect either they design the map to avoid such occurances, or place brushes similar to player clips in source, but it would be "portal clip". No portal exits/entrance can be made behind one.

Valves technology is very good when it comes to glitches. They dont usually have any bugs related to code.......
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-19 03:47:33 UTC Post #190753
Valve are great programmers - thats why halflifes installer deleted your c: if you put it in c:halflife and why hl2's installer doesnt work if you dont install CS:S. Stop being such fucking fanboys, jesus.

You cannot code for every eventuality and something like this puts immense strain on mappers as well. Imaging trying to make any kind of challenging puzzle where the user has this kind of power.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-19 03:53:07 UTC Post #190755
i'd imagine that portal takes place entirely indoors to aviod that kind of thing.
and you gotta admit that trailer looks good. (but im sure you will find some reason that it isnt, jobabob)
valve are geniuses. installers have nothing to do with programming. look at steam. the best content delivery system out there.
pull the pineapple out of your ass kthx.

(PS it comes with ep2 hahaha oh it all comes to the surface now...)

Actually, i'll probably buy episode 2 because of TF2 (if they get this crazy new style right) not because of OMGPORTALZ.

Valve are good programmers, but saying they can do it where everyone else has failed 'becuz they is the best' is a bit silly.

Steam is the best content delivery system I'll have to agree with you there, but I'd still rather buy a boxed game that doesnt require the internet to work thanks.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-19 04:34:14 UTC Post #190759
true, offline would be good
also, its based on this game, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narbacular_Drop - valve employed some of the people who made it, its pretty good (short) for a 25mb download.

Yeah, I want Episode Two for TF2 tbh, the new style looks awesome. I also want Ep2 for...Ep2. ;)

i want it for all three.
ep2 = awsome ourdoorish gameplay and hunters
tf2 = killing frenzy yet again
portal = innovative gameplay and puzzles! yay puzzles!
Penguinboy PenguinboyHaha, I died again!

I'll give that narbacular drop game a try, its annoying when an innovative concept is only innovative because its in a mainstream game

Portals looks uber cool.

tf2 looks uber bad.

Ep2 looks awesome.

Verdict, I wanna play portals and ep2.

Seconded!

I think TF2 just looks...awful. It just looks cartoony. TF was awesome, grizzly looking and things didn't look like plastic.
I mean if this is what it is gonna look like:

"Have to break it to ya, but "portals" where used in Quake 3."

Before that they were in Prey 1997 (I think thats the correct date)

g-kid, TF2 isnt supposed to be TF/C. If you want that then you should probably wait for FF.

Ah. FF does seem..better.

I look forward to EP2 because with it comes the floral rendering system, which is basically a system that uses long draw distances; meaning you can have huge outdoor landscapes (as we all know this is one of HL's current downfalls).

Posted 17 years ago2006-07-19 11:35:23 UTC Post #190812
you can still fake large draw distances quite well though with skyboxes, unless you are talking flight-sim-in-halflife
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-19 11:43:36 UTC Post #190814
TF2: IMO the Pixar Toy Story style is much more interesting than the gritty realistic look we've seen hundreds times before. Thumbs up to VALVe for being able to make dramatic artistist decisions, both in the good and the bad.

I watched the teaser. Those animations were great but I doubt most of them have much use beside the odd idle animation or taunt. Impressive never the less.

I wonder if it will have a crosshair...The older game didn't because you can hold the left mouse button and see where the portal would be before it fires.

I'm sure more people will map for this due to the demand for hard puzzles and the fact that it doesn't require too much detail.
