Should you split up brushes, or when would it be needed? Like so:

Would this be better in one large brush? I usually make my brushes large, and extend them, instead of making individuals. But i see a lot of maps using small, individual brushes. Is this just a mapping style, or does it help performance?

well,

It looks dull to have large brushes like that. Most good maps will have a variety of small brushes, so that it looks better. If you really want a big gaping wall sticking out like that, then use one brush. A variety of brushes for one wall will actually make it worse, as the engine must process... well... more brushes. Instead of one side to light, it has to light two...

The game engine will auto-split a brush face every 1024 units. Making more brushes will make more faces, and as a result, more polygons.

The difference in performance is probably marginal at best (of course, as long as you don't turn a 1-face wall into a 60-faced wall ;) ). I wouldn't chop them up, as it's a waste of time that will only marginally decrease performance. Really, the only time you should split a brush is when adding variations to a texture, like windows in a wall.

I like my answer better...

But we agreed :D

And I was about to edit out my type-os!

I like Bratty's answer better too, since it was far more correct. As I've explained before, cutting up a single brush into a bunch of pieces doesn't make any difference once compiled, because it just melds them into one face, as long as all the textures are aligned together.

The game will merge faces together? I didn't know that.
