Recently, I bought vista, and in combination with my ATI catalyst control center, Hammer 3.5 won't work as it did before. What happens is when I click in the perspective view ( To select an object ) it crashes. My guess is that I need to run it in D3D mode ( If thats possible ).

Anyways, does anyone know of a fix?

Funjob, never ever buy new versions of Windows until they're stable and the programs and communities have moved.

I know, it was a bad choice, however, I am looking for a solution. Any ideas?

No. It's your bad luck. If you still have Windows XP or a restore disk, use that. Otherwise, just get a "totally legal" version for free.

Half of Vista's sell was DX10 (the other was the new transparent UI). Why would Microsoft waste time writing a decent OpenGL (what Hammer uses) solution? Save your Vista discs/ serial number for later and re-install XP.

The problem you have is tricky. Valve won't update Hammer 3.5 so it works in Vista, and Microsoft won't update Vista so Hammer 3.5 works... :(

Listen, I am not going back to XP because it caused more problems than Vista ( Steam wouldn't start, random lag spikes.. ) Even when I replaced half of my hardware and formatted. When I migrated to Vista, all of that stopped, and it also looks like Hammer also decided to stop too... I'm thinking someway to run Hammer in a different render, or maybe get 4.0 to work with HL1.
Posted 17 years ago2007-03-18 23:35:13 UTC Post #216322
It's sad, because if nobody can get it working, HL1 mapping is going to die right alongside XP.

Still, it's gotta be something you did to your computer to make it so bad. You don't just get random lag spikes from doing nothing. It was probably a virus or something. And Steam not starting... Well, I dunno about that, but again, I usually tend to blame these things on the user. I've never had problem with Steam like that, and most were cleared up long ago.

And if all else fails, I'd go to Windows 2000. I've heard it's great, and it's pretty much compatible with everything XP is.

It was actually when my internet lagged, I had a wireless type N card, that goes around 300 mbps. However, when someone on my WLAN did something on the internet, my internet lagged, and for some reason caused lag spikes. I used lan cables, bought a new router, bought a new processor, formatted, bought new ram... The problem finally stopped when I switched to vista. Steam would just dissapear to my processes when I started it back in XP. All of it is now fixed in Vista.

Maybe I'm just being stupid but doesn't Hammer 4 have support for HL1 mapping...?
I mean, it has options where you can load WADs and stuff.
I've never tried it but maybe it works?

Well, it works fine, just the textures just seem short of showing up.

Are you using the halflife1 fgd?

Yes, but for some reason, the WAD loads in, but it never makes it to the 3d screen. I just see it on the side window when I select the brush with the face tool.

arent the complile tools totally different??
And funjob. I have vista as well, just try running the 3-d window in shaded-poly mode.
you know. click the camera button and see all the polygons. It takes an hour or so to get used to, and texturing is a bitch, but it works.

Windows 2000 is a good choice, but I found it was actually less stable than XP for me, strangely enough. But yeah, if you wanna map, you will have to drop Vista, period. -.-
m0p m0pIllogical.
Posted 17 years ago2007-03-19 11:14:21 UTC Post #216366
Well Tetsu0, I can just export maps and just use a batch script. Even in wireframe, it will crash. What kind of graphics card do you have? It's funny, hammer 4.X works fine, but I don't have textures. Though Hammer 3.5 works with textures, but without a perspective. :(

Simple: XP runs natively on dual core Macs. No emulation required. Vista runs now as well. Why you'd want to rape a Mac with Vista is beyond me.

Besides being a shitty "IDEA!!!", it's also completely pointless, and beside the point. All you're doing is telling him to go back to Windows XP. He could do that with the high end laptop he has now, why buy a Mac for it?

In conclusion, your logic fails.
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-16 15:06:16 UTC Post #219235
Why on earth would any one buy vista? Newer isnt always better...
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-18 19:27:14 UTC Post #219472
Pointless bump: When I said that he had a high end laptop, I thought this was the same thread Tetsu0 started, when he had the same problem. I have no idea what this guy has... not that it matters. Ugh. :zonked:
