Prefab crates should be removed from Hammer.

Crates are good for a consistent experience in competitive multiplayer games. I'm not trying to be the worlds most creative and innovative mapper here. It's an aim map. Gameplay first, aesthetics second.

I love all the beautiful SP maps you guys make... and the fantasy deathmatch levels that are always so stunning. But when it comes to Counter-Strike, there isn't that many options. Especially when it's "CSPromod" and the players are very much utilitarian when it comes to what's in a map. A lot of players think that the barrels and milk crates in CS:S do not belong in the game that really launched e-sports.

Pillars, Crates, Walls, Windows and Doors are predictable, and this is a good thing. Objects with straight edges and right angles (or 45 angles) lend themselves well to a game like Counter-Strike.

Certainly, I would not use crates as my primary source of cover in a full blown bomb/defuse map. Maybe when I'm done making maps for aim training then I'll continue my quest to make the ultimate London map. That, my friend, will definitely have no crates at all. Probably because I live in London and I've never seen an actual crate in my life. But these are the hanging gardens of csp_aim_babylon, and there's a plaque with my name on it, a button that plays music out of nowhere under the bridge (Babylon by Splash), and fuck of great floating sign in the sky. Oh and some crates...

Funnily enough, I live next door to a small car parts imports company, and about once a month a huge truck comes by and drops a few dozens of crates and pallets on the sidewalk.

I think people underestimate (the pure awesomeness of crates and  ) how many crates there actually are in the world. Sure you don't see them very often, but who knows! Maybe the scenario from 'Too Many Crates' is actually happening!!! I think we all better keep some crowbars handy... :^_^:

Replace your crates with trees and some of these things.

I find that when I don't have a good reference pic, then I'm screwed when it comes to painting... its like I don't use the right color palette whenever I paint a face without reference.. ah well.. heres some paintings I'm working on
the other one with a painting of a face I actually used Hugh Laurie as reference but looks nothing like him... ah well;

So don't make maps intended for the majority of players. Make maps that you like, both in gameplay and in asthestics. Chances are, if you make one you like, it will be quality by the time you deem it good enough to release.
Most CS:S players don't have a sense of what made CS great in the first place; realistic gameplay, good looking maps, and a balanced weapon set.

Unbreakable: Face looks great, even though it's nothing like your reference!

fsr, i much prefer prototyping in hammer 3.x rather than hammer 4 fsr...

I plan on adding piles of dirt, construction vehicles, props like ladders and tools, and a trench around the foundation. Only problem is the wpoly are so high because each piece of wood is individually brushed, rather than modeled or mask textured..

Unbreakable: Nice work on the wolf though the old man seems very strange to me.

agreed. maybe some nice goldsource displacements for dirt mounds here and there using PB's Twister 5?

Essentially its the reinvention of 6D. Its waaaaaaaay better, more stable gameplay, better physics, nicer graphics, easier controls, and higher flexibility for puzzles.

Fullbright because I can't seem to find a skybox that looks nice and has lighting settings that work with the map. They're all either too yellow/bright or the pitch is too shallow and/or the XYZ lighting is coming from behind a larger building, blocking 90% of the light for a section.
Notewell NotewellGIASFELFEBREHBER
Posted 14 years ago2010-03-07 20:28:51 UTC Post #279543
If the light is coming from behind a large building, but you like the skybox, can't you just take all solids in Hammer and rotate 90/180?
Posted 14 years ago2010-03-07 20:55:40 UTC Post #279544
It would be very impractical.
Hammer would likely crash, and all my decals might be lost.

Hammer would likely crash
Why?
all my decals might be lost.
Why? Use overlays. They're actually assigned faces.
Archie ArchieGoodbye Moonmen
Posted 14 years ago2010-03-07 21:23:17 UTC Post #279546
It would crash because I have a shitload of solids and ents, and the map would take a 3840x3317x820 block to fully encase.
And overlays are expensive compared to decals, so I've only used one or two of them.
And I'll find a skybox that works. Or I'll just let the alleys and some streets be darker. The HEV suit does have a flashlight.

I'm sorry, but that is a pretty barren map from the screenshots. There is no way there's enough detail there to crash hammer when it's rotated.

You're more used to 4 than I am, so you're probably right. It's probably more powerful than 3.X was.
Still, I don't want to rotate it. :P

I know, that's why I am trying to learn from my mistakes.

Besides, this layout is really bad for a single-player game.

Well, i've been working in a map here, a containment facilty.

There's a background even:

During the nuclear war , earth turned into a wasteland,
soon containment facilities where build for keeping survivors,
guarding ammunitions, and conducting researches.

The map will contain:

-Cell Blocks.

-A High Security Storage Building

-Data Control Center.

-Subterranean Research Facility.

well here are the screens
