It's ileagal, but can be done using decompiling and stuff.

What are you planning to do, really.
Are you gonna remake HL2, for HL1?

Honestly, the point of that would be??
Just buy Half-Life 2... it will be in it's original state and not on a 1998 engine, thats 6 years older... And I honestly don't think you could pull it off either...

BUY IT!?!?!!? and do what? install steam!?!?

there is a problem with steam? i have none. matter of fact, the only problem you would/could/should have would be your PC. Steam has come a long way, and has found a place next to our hearts.

so can anyone get me the hl2 zombie model and convert it for me? person will (not! HAHAHAAHAHH!!!!!) be credited.

As mentioned above, converting Source models is illegal. It violates Valve's TOC, and even more so since you don't own Half-Life 2.

As for Steam 'screwing your Internet', I would think it's more a case of PEBCAK than anything else.

Steam has many annoyances, but whenever I hear someone say it downloaded a virus, downloaded cheats, or broke their internet connection, I laugh.

Modelling something as complex as a Strider isn't a simple 2 minute process. It takes a lot of hours and dedication to do something like that, and there would need to be some real motivation for the modeller to actually do it in the first place.

Unless you're Rimrook.

Is it just me, or am I getting the impression, that you're willing to do something as pointless as re-creating HL2 in HL1?
Sure, if it's a project to show off your coding/modelling/mapping skills so that others know you can re-create something from HL2 in HL1, go ahead. But from what you're posting - you want everyone to finish the hard part for you, an unknown modder, who didn't even bother explaining what his mod is about and hasn't shown any media to attract the coders/modellers.

You really have to try better than that to get some help.

You have to provide something, at least more info on your mod. Remaking HL2 effects on a 10-yr-old game engine is an amazing ammount of work, even for the most skilled people. No-one's quitting everything he's doing and suddenly sacrificicing a month of his spare time on a mod with no media, no story, made by a person he's never heard of.

i don't even know what the story is going to be yet. i'm too busy trying to get all the models, sounds, textures and anything else to my game.

Sounds to me like you're working backwards.

1: idea
2: story
3: concept art
4: ???
5: MOD!

let's say, HL1 was released in '98. It took (more than) 6 years for an entire company to develop, code, model, test, etcetcetc HL2 with their engine created for that purpose. You want to use the old engine, build up skills at coding, modeling and of course mapping, creating a mod out of it... by looking at it now, it can be released around 2070, the last mod today's TWHLers will see before death. Hold on, we'll be playing Half-Life 18 episode 4 then.
btw to even do some modding don't we need steam at all, like, steam HL? or am I mistaken?
Posted 16 years ago2008-01-03 19:53:48 UTC Post #242531
Hey look, ahem 'buddy'. There is a difference between working on it over a period of three days and working on it for an accumulated 72 hours. Rimrook is one of our best modelers here, and he'll spend as good 5+ hours on something of moderate complexity (that's more an estimate, ask him).

Strider? Extremely complex...

As for the whole idea of remaking HL2 in the HL1 engine I'd say don't bother. You would have to remake everything yourself for legal reasons and there would be far to much work involved just to take a great game and cast its technology back 7 years.

hey guys! you think i should write a tutorial on how to make doors open and stay open? (only you can't just press the use key to close them. they actually stay open.) i'm asking you guys cuz' a door that stays open just seems kinda useless.

EDIT: woa. i just checked out the stats thing. somebodys been looking at my profile more than 45 times.

You mean a tutorial on how to type "-1" in the "delay before close" field of the door's properties? No, I don't think that'll be necessary. ;)

Well, you realize you have stirred up quite the ruckus on the forums with your careless behavior, right? That's as good of a way to get attention as any.

"You mean a tutorial on how to type "-1" in the "delay before close" field of the door's properties?"

um, hate to break it to you, but you can still close the door. thats why i made a tutorial.
Posted 16 years ago2008-01-04 02:18:35 UTC Post #242553
No you can't...not without a trigger...unless maybe you've got the "use only" flag on. Anyway, I think you'd have a hard time convincing anyone that this is tutorial-worthy.

Also, learn to use quote tags please.
Posted 16 years ago2008-01-04 02:53:08 UTC Post #242556
Uh, that's why you experiment.. the tutorials are there to give you an idea of how the entity works and show you a general usage. To fix a matter as easy as that does not deserve a tutorial.
thats why i made a tutorial.
You've wasted your time.

Also, you fail to grasp that this place is here to 'guide' you in the modding process... and not do everything for you. We will not convert models for you, we will not code for you, or do anything without proper media to base our judgment off of. To say "um, hate to break it to you, but you can still close the door." just pisses me off.. Assuming you care enough about mapping to keep doing it, that is easily and quickly figured out. Mappers need to figure that out themselves, that's why it's not mentioned.

If you've come to twhl to learn how to map and not be TOLD how to map, by all means.. stay.. otherwise this isn't the place for you.

Also, like we've said. Do NOT ask for custom provided material unless we see some screenshots or something. If you're too worried about a half-made shitty map to show us, you're obviously not good enough to run a mod. Besides, you dont say you're making a HL2 mod and then say you dont know how the story goes. That's.. discouraging.
