Maybe Kissker could supply us a gif or video, but he explains how it moves in his thread, and you can kinda see how it works looking at it closely.

Yahoo Muzz is in! = )

are you doing it in Hammer 3.4 or 4?

Yeah me too, but hopefully someone will do it in source to help out Kissker's problem too. Is there a stand-alone version of Hammer 4 (and the HL2 model viewer for that matter), or do you have to have the SDK still?

You need the Source SDK to use those apps.

heres a link to youtube showing the intro movie

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3PXiV95kwA

Skip to the 2 minute mark to see the 'inner' door open (not pictured) then it goes to the hall- inside view of the door- then you see the outside and it open up.

FRAPs wouldn't record for me or I'd of cut a movie down to just it myself, sorry bout that, and the Youtube linked is NOT mine, so thanks to them for the movie.

I think its rather funny that Muzzle pretty much got the whole thing done exactly how it is in the real game, on his first shot none the less, and never played or seen the game before! lol. That's some talent right there.

That looks amazing Muzz! (downloading now)

Here's my entry. I haven't made it openable yet, and I'll TRY not to cheat to see how you made it open! = )

Um no. Your entry is beautiful in form and in function absolutely... simply great : O (and the small liberties you made in design made it look better actually imo)

My only question is how long did it take you and can it be "closeable"?
Captain Terror Captain Terrorwhen a man loves a woman
Posted 15 years ago2008-07-26 13:40:28 UTC Post #252994
It took me 2-3 hours to make the entire thing.

You can make it close, but you'll have to use a little "magic".

Did you get yours to roll open?

I haven't tried yet, but that's my next step. I'm either going to try a train with angular velocity, or some env_render tricks perhaps.

I can't believe you completed that thing in such a short period of time... just excellent. I hope nobody is scared to make an entry looking at yours! = )

To recap for everyone, we changed Geometry Challenge 10 from build a robot to:

Geometry Challenge #10 - Recreate this Door!

Build the door described in Kissker's thread. You can do it in hammer 3.x or 4 (Goldsource or Source).

Rules:
-The challenge will end when we want it too.
-The winner will be chosen by voting in this thread
-The winner gets to choose the next challenge.
-Have Fun! = )

It still renders weird changing from one door to the other, but i've exceeded my personal time limit for this challenge. Same goes for making a nice map for the door.

Heh, beveling rounded objects is always a challenge. Took me ~45 mins till I got mine right.

I really liked the door, the sequence was fairly simple, though it did the job. Too bad there were some problems with viewing the door from its back side - some faces wouldn't render properly.

Captain, you can see the transition from where it changes from the rolling door to the sliding door.

Whoa Daub... tis sex! = )

Hey btw i figured out the problem why my entry was rednering weird. it was nothing wrong with the geometry, but my mistake was for the env_render when making each door "appear", i made it texture, 255, when it should have just been rendered normally, or normal, 255. I guess i din't know solids rendered texture/255 were not totally solid-looking for every angle! = P

Muzz: after the compo is over you might share some of your seekrits, though i think you might have a problem lining up the textures in the "rotating" door, transitioning to the "straight-moving" door, if you had to start with the door open? (maybe not, but i can't think of a way to do it unless you mono textured the door, but even then...)
Anyway, great entries so far. Anyone else gonna join in?! = P

yes...i am joining....btw...you can also use SoHL said captain terror
Posted 15 years ago2008-07-29 10:38:10 UTC Post #253133
Captain: Its very simple:

There are two doors, both func_trains. Door1 is the sliding door, door2 is the rolling door. Door1 is in its closed position, door2 is inside an unreachable room somewhere in the map.
Door1 starts to slide. When it reaches the position where it should stop sliding and start to roll to the right, its teleported to the unreachable room. Door2 is then teleported from that same room into the main room at the same location where door1 teleported out.
Then door2 starts to slide to right, but to make it rotate while sliding, i used an angular velocity value: 0 0 -32. This will make the door rotate on the Z-axis with a speed of 32 while sliding, creating the illusion that it is rolling!
Thats pretty much it.

Here's the RMF for you people to have a look at:
http://www.themightyatom.nl/stuff/muzz_rolling_door.rmf

Using SoHL is fail, because it makes this compo too easy. I know this is about geometry, but in this case, geometry alone will not get you a winning position. This particular minicompo also requires you to use entities, and using SoHL would be way too easy. But whatever. I think mine really shows the power of angular velocity on func_trains.

Half-life Genius: It makes no difference to me! People will vote for the map they like the best. Muzz is right using SOHL is less challenging, but who cares?.. go for it! I'd love to see another interpretation of the door, regardless. = D

Muzz: Ya my door works exactly the same way, except mine started open, and i didn't use a teleport. It's also set to passable. (For an actual game, i'd make a blue door rendered invisble to act as the actual barrier)

what i really want to know is how you "hide" the rendering from one door to another; i can always see the change in the angle of the texture when the rendering off/on happens.

If you're starting with an open door, how do you make everthing line up? a closed door is simple because everthing is already lined up before the rotation begins)

I don't really know, the transition was perfect on the first try. Guess i got lucky. :)

well like I said, you don't have to worry about your textures lining up it if the door starts in the "closed" postion, do you? :P

The problem comes if the door is starting open; after the rotating door stops, the textures are at an odd angle, and don't line up with second, straight moving door, ya know?

Any ideas for that problem?

(btw here's a slightly updated version of my door minus the rendering errors:

Would it be acceptable to modify the design slightly, provided it keeps all of the original elements? I can't see anything that actually pushes the door out of it's hole, or makes it move along, which seems silly.

TJB/Daub: Absolutely. While the original door is really cool, it does have some design/function aspects that just don't seem plausible. Feel free to make any improvements you can think of! = )

I told myself i wouldn't spend any more time on my entry, but i have some extra free time poping up, so who knows. (probably won't though = ))

I'm happy to see some of the original participators in the the geometry challenges still around. We've spawned lot's of quality maps with our challenge ideas.

Let's keep them coming and make this one of the most popular geometry challenges in a while! = ) (GET YOUR MAPS IN OR ELSE... = D)

I guess #10 - Remake a door is done. Out of the entries i think Muzz's is the clear winner, and i guess i get second since Daubster never submitted his very-beautifully-constructed door (pictured in a screenshot above).

If you guys want to do an 11th geometry challenge, I'm in, but Muzz has first dibs on choosing the next one. I might submit a source entry since i have a source capable machine now. = )

Your job is to remake this picture as closely as possible in either Source or GoldSource. I would choose Source in this case cuz it offers more detail.

It can be anything you like, as long as you maintain the original point of view.
