I can do this quite easily, But it's time for you guys.
This is another Sphere challenge.

Geometry Challenge #4:

Make a 12 sided hollow sphere that compiles without error. :gak:

Happy Mapping. :hammer:

Same problem here: disappearing faces...

Looks like a Hammer bug.

EDIT: (Can't join the upper ring of vertices to finish the sphere...)

Yeah. I've tried at least 6 times, and i kept getting the same error, i just don't think the editor is build for it. IMO.

and i just noticed:
Tetsu0: lol nice photshop!

Yeah for # 3 I don't think it's possible (with hammer anyway) to make it without error and only one brush... I'll try it again later maybe, but now on to number 4! Hollow sphere here we come... = )

Tetsu0: your avatar, or is that a mask!

Muzzleflash: that seriously sucks. I hope you figure it out without reformating!

Oh no Captain Terror, I think you might have misunderstood what i meant by the challenge. That's a big fault on my part as well. :(

To explain better, i quote redka :
Create a sphere from one brush, which looks like as a 10 sided prism in the 2D views.
My challenge is a lot like Redka's only instead of one brush, it's multiple brushes, and instead of a 10 sided prism, it would have 12 sides.

I do apologize Captain, as your dodehedrathingamawhat was well crafted.

Crap. = ) oh well it was fun to make anyway.

Here's my new #4 entry: (the sphere is hollow, you just have to noclip inside)

A lot easier than the dodecagator fo sho! : P

It is not fully symmetrical, from the side views it looks like as a 18 sided prism and is not a perfect circle. BUT I need to shut my mouth, because I just cant create it with Hammer. My vertex points in game were not in the correct position or I got many errors in my compile. With Quark it is just takes me 5 minutes or less, I wonder how to make you guys it with Hammer. :o
Posted 16 years ago2008-01-14 14:20:07 UTC Post #243415
Very Well done Captain, Although it is not 12 sides, you did do that other... thing... before so you deserve this win.

Your choice for Geometry Challenge #5 :hammer:

Redka, If you go to my youtube channel, i Explain how (with a video) to make a dome with hammer using all valid brushes. The same thing applies to spheres, only you basically make 2 domes and join them at the middle with another group of brushes... kinda like this:

{ + [] + } = {[]} = Sphere.

Kinda..

Posted 16 years ago2008-01-14 18:26:58 UTC Post #243434
Tetsu0: Yay! I followed your dome tutorial so thanks to you! = ) Do you use HLFix on your dome?

I don't really know what you mean by 12 sides tho, I mean at the top where the slices of the sphere come together, there are 12... that's what I thought you meant (or 3 wedges per 90 degrees).

I'll come up with a compo 5 in a little while!

Redka: Yeah like the first one is how i did it too. I can't get the sides to line up after compile perfectly without using HLFix (I would highly recommend anyone using hammer to use it).

Someone said in mapping tips you can use the arch tool to make domes, but i dunno... actually I think there is an old VERC tutorial about it : /
Captain Terror Captain Terrorwhen a man loves a woman
Posted 16 years ago2008-01-14 18:48:10 UTC Post #243436
No i don't use HLFIX for anything i do. If i can't create a valid brush, then i don't. :crowbar: I have not tried making a dome with the arch tool. But i think i might know how to do so... in-fact. I'm gonna try right now.

Redka, the way i do it is..thusly: Since a 12 sided cylinder has 3 wedges per 90 degrees, as captain terror mentioned, one of those sides HAS to be a 45 degree angle.

We all know that Hammer doesn't like anything that's not a 45 deg, or 90 deg angle. So i only make the 45 deg angle brushes at different angles at either end. If that confuses you... here's a pic explaining what i mean.
User posted image
You can see from this pic that the top, bottom, left, and right sides, when flipped, will all be facing in a good direction. And as for the 45 deg angle, as long as you make the sheer in each direction symmetrical, there will be no errors in your map. :hammer: :hammer:

So. 8, 12, 24 sides.. are all good to use for curves and domes and spheres and such. Anything that's going to be hollow, anyway.

Geometry challenge #5: Make a hypercube.

Since nobody knows what they really look like, you can really make it whatever you want, but it should look super fancy and exoticly cubish. (If you're struggling for ideas, image search "hypercube", 4-dimensional, or check out one of the many web pages dedicatated to them.

Tetsu0:It's amazing you can do that dome without HLFix...

Imo hammer is flakey enough with brush errors to have to worry about seams that look fine in-editor, and then mess up (overlap inexplicably, look jagged) after compile; HLFix eliminates that annoyance!

So my Hypercube is totaly different from Tetsu0's one. Mine looks like in the 2D views as a drawn 3D cube, but it contains 8 pieces of brushes, and two of them are perfect cubes. I know that my cube in the 2D views is not symmetrical, because the lenght of the edges are not the same, but I have found it out after I finished, and I dont feel like creating another one (too lazy).

Zombie: I guess you say it's "great" because you tried the tutorial and made one?! Please post your sphere so we may touch it! = )

I'm going to give it a try but I'm guessing it will be filled with compile/HOM errors... we'll see!

Was anybody able to find the VERC sphere tutorial? (maybe it doesn't exist, lol).

Verc tutorial without pictures I think it is the same as Snarkpit's tut.

No one else is interested in these challenges or are they just slothful? This is a 3 of us challenge, I mean there are plenty of good mappers here, where are they...

For the geometry challenge #6, hmm:
Create a fancy column, just the decorated one, no more obligation given, it is up to you how it looks like; can be greek, roman, any modern one,... anything which needs a little brushwork. The winner is that who gets the most votes, because beauty comes from a subjective aspect.

Hammer desperately needs a Snap To Face, Snap To Edge, and Snap To Vertex.

EDIT: and some kind of renderable spline (or path based geometry) for easy trimming, railing, wires, and so on. VM-ing all that is a pain in the ass.

At least that's what i think Rimrook means.

Having angled edges snap to faces so the face becomes the plain.??

When I upgraded my computer I just copied the directory structure from one comp to the other and it worked, is still working good with no troubles. I didn't think it would work but if it ain't broke i guess... = )

K here's my number 6, simple fluted columns:

http://captain0terror.googlepages.com/geometry60000.zip

I'm having problem weird shadows on some of the small brushes, and I can't seem to get my light environment to work (hence the weird texture lighting) If someone can be bothered to check out these problems I'd be grateful! The columns are also fatter/blockier than I'd like but I'm not redesigning them. = )

Tetsu0: Columns look great in-game, and the glass texture looks cool, and they're scaled nicely. but maybe you could adjust the texture scaling/lighting to accent the flutes a little better...I mean they look good, but they could look better. (there hard to see imo)

I don't think you can edit unless you have the last post....

Btw figured out a couple of my aformentioned problems:

-light_environment wasn't working because of my sky brushes weren't textured every face with sky.

-the light was coming through brush seams because of some off-grid verticies.

Hey ant222, finish yours, cuz its so cool...and Captain Terror, yours has a little advantage with that lighting, makes it so beauty, but there is a little gap between the columns and the highest strair, I know this is for discourage splitting up faces, but if you turn the highest step into a func_wall is also solves this problem, or just make it higher or lower in case that the players cant see the gap. Tetsu0's one is also f*cking great, as always...

When I figured #6 out I didnt think that these beauty columns will be created.

BUT we need more challengers!!!

After 36 hours my post the election will starting...hopefully anyone can join who wants in that period or is it too long?

is it cheating if i use displacements?
This challenge is in the goldsource engine discussion, so yes it would be cheating, unless your map is also working under this engine (but i have never heared that before it could be possible). Anyway if the usage of Quark is cheating, then the usage of displacement would be a very huge cheating (if it is possible), but I am not gonna disqualify that person, who knows a quicker and better way of making it, just make it work in hl1. Hopefully no one else disagrees with that, dont you?
Posted 16 years ago2008-01-17 17:27:25 UTC Post #243639
Yeah, today the situation with my exam has taken a very bad turn... I got to program soundly all night long, and even that may be to no effect! So I just release my column for public use in the hope that somebody turns it into a final compo entry. Note the column is twisted, but due to its being 8-sided, that's not quite noticeable, so I thought it might be done with some grooves like in cactuses (with a gear-like cross-section), or it may be endowed with branches...

Link: http://twhl.co.za/mapvault_map.php?id=4965

P.S.: If I am still alive tomorrow, maybe I'll try finishing it...
Posted 16 years ago2008-01-17 21:02:48 UTC Post #243657
I hope you can finish it but studies come first!

Here's my final for #6:

http://captain0terror.googlepages.com/geometry60003.zip

I used alt-e to taper the top and bottom of each column so there thinner
and tapered now. The capital parts of the columns are also scaled down using alt-e, but no big visible errors, so I'm leaving them that way rather than redesigning.

Hope somebody else joins in before the end... it was so much fun! : )

Agreed. It would be nice to have more players... Maybe the 3-4 of us who always participate should make a mod together!

On an unrelated idea, here is my hypercube version:

http://captain0terror.googlepages.com/hypercube0007.zip

If I demand more time, I would like to experiment with render options and other stuff to make the effect better. I used separate func_walls for each cross section, which made the effect a lot better than making the whole a single entity.
