The very first TWHL3 competition is up!

We will be having a three-day cool-down period before it is open for entries.

Discussion goes here.

More Information
The task is to remake a map from a different game (AND ENGINE) in source or half-life 1. Games allowed are:
Half-Life & HLDM
Counter-Strike
Half-Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2, Deathmatch
Team Fortress 2
Counter-Strike Source
Spirit of Half-Life (must be a mod)

The map can be either singleplayer or multiplayer, but MUST include a readme saying what game it is for, and whether it is single or multiplayer.

Example readme:
Name: dm_mapname
By: Penguinboy
Game: Half-Life 2 Episode 1
Type: Singleplayer

I must point out that you don't have to make the exact same map - i.e. you can change the texturing, you can change the models (anything to get out of making custom content, if you are unable) - as long as the map represents the map in the screenshots you provide.

I must stress this point: Disqualification is immediate if the BSP file or the mod name does not include your TWHL username.
That is: example names for a BSP is compo25_penguinboy, or dm_mapname_penguinboy (you do not have to go as far as having exact capitals, and if you have funny symbols in your username you can leave them out). Example mod names are "Penguinboy's Compo25 Entry", "Mod Name - By Penguinboy", etc.

Prize for first place (one each for source and gldsrc) is a steam purchase up to the value of US$30, which you will choose, and the game(s) will be gifted to you via steam.
Second and third place for each engine is a personalised letter from the TWHL admin team and an official TWHL sticker. (it isn't a "You're winner" sticker, it's the TWHL logo or something)
Note that to prevent a monopoly of prizes, each user can only ever recieve one prize of the same thing. (you don't get $60 of steam games if you win both engines.)

entries can be .rar or .zip format.

custom content is allowed. just remember we will not be judging the custom content or code.

Since I have the material for it, maybe I could join >:>
Of course I won't use what I currently have in the crysis project, that would be unfair.

As I mentioned in the brief, there are prizes this time. Here's what's up for grabs:

1st Prize - $30 worth of games over Steam. You will have a free choice of any game(s) over Steam!
2nd & 3rd Prize - Personalised congratulatory letter and official TWHL3 sticker.

Since the competition is being judged seperately, these prizes are on offer for both engines. While you are allowed to submit entries (and win) for both engines, you cannot win prizes for both engines. Should you win a place for both engines, we shall decide on what to do with the prizes.

So yes, get involved folks! We want a huge turnout for this compo, and with some tasty Steam products up for grabs, you should've all started already!

Surely both, take Black Mesa Source as an example. Anyone who's played HL and sees BM:S will instantly recognise the scenes, yet they've been greatly improved. They keep the basis and build on it, so you'll have to be clever in order to achieve the right balance.

you can remake a source map in half-life 1 and vice versa

you cannot remake a source map in source, etc.

oops sorry madcow i forgot to answer - it's a pre-emptive yes (i would love to see some cartoony tf2 remake maps) but i've yet to confirm the judges of this compo so we have to make sure they have the orange box.

Does the map have to be playable, for instance can I use C:SS without having it be an actual fighting map, as in no buy zones, cause C:SS has good textures for what I am remaking.
Posted 16 years ago2008-03-02 18:49:16 UTC Post #247074
more details in the top post.

no, the map doesn't have to be playable, but it would be better for your chances if it was.
Penguinboy PenguinboyHaha, I died again!
Posted 16 years ago2008-03-02 21:24:39 UTC Post #247076
Ok, some more details:

Yes you are allowed to remake a map from a game that's appeared on a console! As well as the requirements for your entry's readme, I'm also making it mandatory to give details on the level you've actually recreated. This includes the name of the original game and what platform it was on (i.e. PC or console). We need this to cross-check your entries as best we can.

For example, if you've remade a level from Super Mario 64, you'd put in your readme:

Game: Super Mario 64
Platform: Nintendo 64
Level Name: Tick Tock Clock

As for the prizes, no, they are not going to be the same for each compo, nor can we guarentee that all competitions will have prizes. We mods are poor folk. :P

I just started mapping for hl2 so am unfamiliar with making custom textures and sounds and stuff but might enter. Definetly with a retro game if so.

the compo is for both half-life 1 and source. they are judged separately.

So is the game judged on playability? I have a map in mind, but its huge, and not only that, its got a reflective floor :\ R_speeds would be through the roof, and it would not be fun to fight enemies, but fun to look at, so im just going to try recreating the acrcitecture as best i can. Would that hurt my map in terms of judging?
Posted 16 years ago2008-03-03 09:09:31 UTC Post #247091

anyhoo, i have been thwarted already having only discovered now that source goes horribly buggy if you try to put more than 2 brushes in front of one another when they have alpha channel transparent textures.

Now this sounds like a competition I could be interested in I think I might make remake of a map from one of the rainbow six games. Also just out of curiosity can you make levels using half life expansions e.g. opposing force

No Hunter, you fail at understanding:
custom content is allowed, but only if you made it yourself. the same goes for custom code. just remember we will not be judging the custom content or code.
And as for Trooper:
1. Games allowed are:
Half-Life & HLDM
Counter-Strike
Half-Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2, Deathmatch
Team Fortress 2
Counter-Strike Source
Spirit of Half-Life (must be a mod)
So no Rainbow Six Engine. :(

Posted 16 years ago2008-03-03 17:33:59 UTC Post #247114
no, unbreakable. You fail at understanding. On 2 counts.
man, so it must be our custom made resources, so no HL2 textures
HL2 textures are not custom content. They are very much allowed if you are mapping for HL2. Same goes with HL1 Textures for HL1.

Further, as has been pointed out, your lack of grasping the difference between "from" and "for" is rather worrying.

trooper, Opp4 is not mentioned in the games list, so i would say it's not allowed. You may wish to PM one of the judges for a definate answer, though.
