Or if you just want a rounded tunnel with a turn in it, make the two segments and clip.

You may have to be more specific.

I think he means a pipe with a bend in it.

There's a method in Mapping Tips, but I'm too lazy to find it right now.

what should i do?
Posted 14 years ago2010-04-01 17:47:36 UTC Post #280173
Yeah, I tried that one time but gave up on smoothing the tunnel.
The only thing I could think of was to do this:

But that's really just exactly what Snarkpit tells you to do. And this method only works with 2 pieces; any more and you get a plethora of errors.
Unfortunately this also results in the rounded part being thinner than the rest of the tunnel, and you can't really move the vertices around lest you risk building invalid structures.

Use vertex manipulation rather than copying, pasting and connecting. This will take a bit more time but if you line up the points it should come out error-free!

Good luck!

You'll end up with invalid structures if you do that.

And with modelling that'd take 1 minute tops :D

I might just got the solution. I'm working at it now.

Here's our "Expert" The_(c)Striker to the rescue!

Har!

One other way to do it, is to use temporary cillinders and use the vertices as temporary placeholders for the tunnel parts. It's pretty complex and time consuming.

I used this method in my map for the TWHL Rooms coop project.

Nevermind. It's what The mighty atom said I was trying to do. But in my case, was a total failure.
Then I tried using maths: failed too. I ignored the fact that rotating the arch cut in half 3 times( to make the curve more realistic) will make its sides smaller.

[EDIT] Bah! I'm too tired to think about something. I'm sure there are solutions though. I'd like myself to see one, I was always puzzled with making realistic round tunnel corners.

Rotate to 45 degrees, then intersect them perfectly. Select one and cut the edge at the same

Were it acceptably simple in section, you could use the Arch Tool. Of course, it being cylindrical makes it rather difficult.

I just tried it and didn't get any errors. Also I've used it all over Poison Garden.

That Snarkpit tutorial really isn't good. The curve they did looks like balls.

I'll do it for ya. Shouldn't be too hard, I'll add the extra piece ;)

If all else fails, make one out of triangles.

I did it. It's a little squashed in the middle because you should really use 4 pieces, not three, but you can hardly notice it.

Does ye olde Hammer have the torus tool? I can't remember, but I'm guessing no. And there's no easy way of porting Source maps back into Goldsource that I know of.

You could do this in about a minute with that tool. Use that, paste special and a lot of clipping... easy detailed tunnels.

We know your passion for tunnels, Strider :D.
Can somebody explain that triangle method please? I don't really like copy-paste without knowing how to do one myself.

i am going to use clip these triangles kick my ass

1) Create a cube.

2) Cut the cube in half from corner to corner on your top view to get two triangles.

3) Cut the cube in half again on your front view in the same way.

4) On the left view, it will appear as if it is already cut, but cut it again along the line. This give you a cube made of triangles. No matter what you do with it, you will never receive errors from it.

5) Use the arch tool and make an arch of your choice.

6) Clone your triangle cube and replace each segment of the arch with your tiangles. It will look messy in the wire frame views, but it all works fine.

7) once you have your new arch, use the arch tool again and make yourself a guide to follow. This way you know how thick and what angle the segments of your new arch will be. It will look the most accurate.

8) Vertex manipulate like hell. Use your best judgement and snap the points on the grid to avoid leaks.

9) Profit.

strider: that looks amazing so that's using hammer 4?

Rim: Really good and nice explanation! It would look better with like 2 more horizontal segments, but you'd quadruple your vm work... Did you build 1 quarter of the torus and then clone the other 3, or did you manually build the whole thing?

i'm not sure if i know exactly what you mean about using the arch tool, but i'll check it out!

Hotdog: screenie?

Found at least 2 more of these searching tunnel or torus in the vault... I want to build one now to enter the unofficial torus/twisted-tunnel competition...
