Hi All,

Since Daubster, our specialist map vault and MOTM moderator, hasn't been very active recently, we are currently taking applications for new moderators. If you are interested, post in this thread with a short paragraph on why you think you would make a good moderator. It would be good if you could show us an example of a map review you've done, too.

Here's a basic list of requirements for the two positions we are offering. If you are dedicated enough, you can apply for both jobs, but because we know that people never have much free time, don't try to commit to too much. Please only apply if you're going to be active on TWHL for the forseeable future.

Map Vault Moderator
 • Must own Steam copies of all or most Valve games (required: HL1 & Orange Box)
 • Reviews maps in the vault and gives constructive criticism
 • Deletes spam maps/comments when necessary
 • Fixes old/dead links to maps (if possible) when needed
MOTM Moderator
 • Must own Steam copies of all or most Valve games
 • Reviews the maps for each month and chooses a MOTM winner
 • Writes up a full review of the MOTM for each month (Example)
 • (Hopefully) manages a team of reviews to produce 2 or 3 total reviews each month
 • Does NOT need to catch up on all the missed MOTMs (we missed 18 months :<)
Additionally, new moderators can be added to the competition review team if they wish (but obviously you cannot judge a competition you want to enter).

To make it a bit better for MOTM people, I will be putting MOTM in a prominent place on the front page for all to see. When we were doing MOTMs, they were presented excellently (both youtube and written reviews) - and I think they were an excellent addition to the site. For this reason, I will put the MOTM in a large box on the front page between the news and the forums.

We are looking for two people to add into the moderator team, but we could pick more (or less) depending on how many applications we get.

I would like to be a Map Vault Moderator.
I know I might not have a good reputation on this website, but I am responsible. I have the requirements listed above, I enjoy to go through all the past competitions and play those maps. I know spam when I see it, something that keeps copying itself over and over, something pointless, or something just trashing the person who made the map. Also, I've been to many upload/download sites, I could easily fix a link. Please consider to allow me to me a map vault moderator.

Also, I would like to help judge.

Like I said before, I like to go look at the maps from old competitions. I would be honored to judge.

EDIT: Darnit, I'm missing one game: CS, hopefully somebody else can check the CS maps? My mom refuses to give it to me.

I'm willing to do mv moderator if i qualify. I would also apply for motm position, but i don't really have the time to do it properly.
 • I have all the games except l4D2, ep3, and portal 2 =)
 • Some reviews i've done:

http://twhl.co.za/vault.php?map=5555
http://twhl.co.za/vault.php?map=5552

http://twhl.co.za/vault.php?map=5535
http://twhl.co.za/vault.php?map=5530
http://twhl.co.za/vault.php?map=5514
* Deletes spam maps/comments when necessary
shouldn't be a problem doesn't seem like people do that all that much here anyway.
* Fixes old/dead links to maps (if possible) when needed
I'm kinda doin this already and in the past, as i would try to find mirrors for dead links in the mv, and post them in the entry's comment section.

I would be interested in both positions, but one or the other. I like to review maps and mods, and I do have all the valve games, so I would be capable of reviewing the whole spectrum of maps/mods.

The only thing is, I may have difficulty in a MOTM position just because I can't promise I'd be able to stick to a regular schedule of reviewing. Some months are really busy for me life-wise. Some are not. I do have a good microphone, fraps, and good video editing software however.

As far as an example of a review goes, I'm almost embarrassed by this because this review was written years ago, I think I was 13. Anyway, My Timefall review:
eh, i played this mod 4 times, and, to be honest, i did not like it very well. From the start, i did not understand the story, and i never got any hint of the story in the rest of the game. If i may compare this mod to "lifes end" on this site, i would point out how you really knew your character in "lifes end", from getting fired by the boss, to your character thinking out loud, it really gave you a sense of who you were playing as, and giving you a reason to progress, and protect your character. I did not get the same feeling in timefall, i literally forgot the characters name by the end.

The combat was not all that good, the fights with the aliens were the same thing every time, and the army fights were not implemented in a strategic combat way.

The sniper rifle, while a good idea, was poorly implemented. I noticed that, upon firing the rifle, it took a 2 second delay to hit medium to far away targets, and i realized that this, was because it was just a remodel of the crossbow! - 1 star for that, that really dissapointed me.

The architecture, was repetitive, and boring, and some things just didnt make sense. The texturing was dull, but that wasnt very bad.

The puzzles, gah, the puzzles really annoyed me. They were the same thing over and over, look around for a paper thin ledge, and follow it, open a door, backtrack, activate something, progress. :/

And really, i expected this NOT to be in a mod as highly reviewed as this, the barney said "open fire gordon", now i may have forgotten the characters name, but i know for a fact that it was not gordon. :/ -1 star

This also disapointed me, getting the crowbar, and the shotgun, BEFORE the HEV. Yet you could see the HEV sleeves on your player, thats just not right. - 1/2 star

The only things i really liked, was the time travel sequence, and the clever parts where you saw gordon.

This mod was much less than i expected it to be, i was really disapointed. 2.5 stars, rounds to 3.
Two things I dislike about this review, 1) My overall tone was really negative. and 2) I compared it to another mod. Which I feel isn't a good thing to do.

At any rate. there you go.

I might also add (since I can't edit PB's post) that we are looking for someone with an excellent grasp of spelling and grammar. In terms of review style, it would be preferable if proper reviews were not done in first person.

It's not too hard to write a review in that style and it reads far more professionally than first person.

ATDestroy: It essentially makes a research paper read more like a factual document rather than just personal thoughts.

In regards to being a MOTM moderator:
 • I do own Steam copies of most valve games (with a couple of exceptions, eg. Counter Strike and Left 4 Dead 2)
 • I would enjoy playing through all the maps this site has to offer each month
 • I've got a very respectable grasp of spelling and grammar, if I may say so myself
 • I've got plenty of free time
 • The fact I've been here for so long while hardly ever submitting maps shows I've got some dedication to the community
However, I'm not experienced in writing comprehensive reviews, and I'll probably be strapped for time later this year (what with the last year of high school and all).

Map Vault Moderator Application

Hello, I'm Crollo, although many of you know me under a different alias which I won't go into details about, here are some of the reasons I think you should pick me for the position, and some reasons you shouldn't:

* I am able to review Goldsource maps, but unable to review any source maps as my machine is not adequate for the source engine to run well.
 • I do not own any valve games on steam, other then HL2DM, HL2:LC, and CS:S, but as mentioned before my machine is not adequate to run them well. (I run goldsource under WON)
 • I can review and give C&C to a decent standard.
 • I am able to do basic moderation.
 • My level of grammar and spelling is adequate for the job.
 • I have a good level of free time as I have no job, and I'm still in school.

Why were the beerfort reviews never posted? Pretty sure there were 2 text reviews as well as my video review. It was the last motm I did :(

Also, lol at the notion of Crollo becoming a moderator on the site he got banned like 5062935 times on.

I wouldn't turn it down if you offered me a MOTM reviewer position.
-I can provide detailed reviews (see below)
-I own every Valve game to date
-I am one of the oldest, active members of TWHL and you guys [hopefully] know that I'm not going anywhere.

I was also already on the team that was supposed to catch up on all the missed months. You should ask Daubster if he still has the files we uploaded to his MOTM hub.
If you need an example of how I wrote them, have a look see at these 2:
Review of Noob #2's "de_deabolt"
Review of Rimrook's "Payload"

The problem is motivation, as it seems to be with everyone. To be honest, I would likely be more of a "better than nothing" asset. This isn't exactly an application so much as it's a hey-if-you-want-me-I'm-here.
You know what, this is an application. At most one review a month is nothing. I forget that under Daubster we were crunching several reviews in a very short time span. So yeah, hire me and stuff. I'm your guy.

Edit: I hope I'm even allowed to disclose this information :x

id write the reviews but thats it.
id only take the job just so i get to say "hay! im a moderator on this site!" (which i assume 30% of the people applying on here are doing - to go up in the world or TWHL).

Yep, thats my application.
oh yeah, i was once a moderator on a machinima forum about 2 years ago, so ive got experience.
the end!

Right now I am at school and I can't get a grasp of everything that is discussed here. Since I am a very active member of this community(for 4 years now) and always will be, I am a bit interested in those positions. So here goes:

My application to Vault Moderator\MOTM Moderator
(I'd prefer "Vault Moderator")
 • I can basically review any kind of map, other than L4D/L4D2. I own: Half-Life, Half-Life2, Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, HL2:Ep1, HL2:Ep2, Portal, Garry's Mod, Opposing Force and CS:S.
-although I don't own CS 1.6, I'd still be able to review them in HL. I will, on the other hand, try to discourage the making and posting of cs 1.6 maps here on TWHL. There are probably millions of cs 1.6 maps out there, so investing any kind of effort in cs 1.6 mapping is practically useless. Yes, I myself started mapping in cs 1.6, but there was nobody to guide me at that time. If I started with HL mapping, I would probably have more mapping experience by now.

-I have some random reviews of some maps(comment reviews).

-my grammar and spelling is, I think, adequate. I often use dictionaries when writing some important stuff.

-I still am an active mapper in a way or another

-You'd have the most eastern map reviewer around here, if there's no russian members on the site! :D

-I've played/finished other FPS games, not just the hl series

-having this volunteer job is a chance to improve my english and relationships with you guys.

-I might provide video reviews.

Literally every active member on the site is going to apply for shits and giggles.

No offense, but how does the "I could do it, but I may not be able to do X because of X, and I'm not so good at X" attitude really work out? I mean, you're either applying or you aren't. If you don't think you're the best man for the job, what the hell are you doing offering yourself up? You're just thinking out loud, basically. If Penguinboy wanted half-assed moderation, he'd just randomly choose a current active member and assign them to the job, but that ain't what's going on here.

Me, I'm obviously not applying.

Actually, I don't even know what made me post this...

I don't have the time really so I am out.....sorry...

Alot of good candidates though...

I vote for Rimrook since he is one of the best technical mappers on the site. My second choice would probably be Soup Miner and overall he would probably make the best reviewer.

Sorry if this offends anyone...

Not going to apply for a bazillion reasons(screw responsibility), but instead suggest either Hunter or Rimrook (if he ponies up for CS:S) of the people who have posted so far for the job. Hunter already reviews games like a felon and Rim is one of the more technically skilled dudes on the site.

that's my two cents, anyways.

The least I should do is apologize for letting you all down as far as MotM goes.

I wasn't capable of keeping up with the reviewing myself (procrastination over being busy, really), not to mention motivating the whole team to keep up. Just one of those things I took up lacking the skill or dedication, got everyone's hopes up, and eventually played a major part in leading to the projects' demise (6-D, OIFH, anyone?)

I've moved on from web/level design to programming somewhat successfully over the last few years, hence my low activity in TWHL. Not an excuse to just drop everything and disappear though, so I feel it's just to at least say I am sorry for failing.

Best of luck to my successor.

If it weren't for my stack of projects, meager amount of spare time and the fact that I am about as organised as a terrier's arse hair, I would apply.

I have some MOTM reviewing experience (which I really need to pick up again)

what the hell are you doing offering yourself up
If there's no money involved, it IS 'offering yourself up'. Because it is a 'volunteer' position, you basically are dedicating your own time to do a job you don't have to do.

(And no, I'm not saying I should be picked even though I'm not 'the best', I'm just putting up a honest application as to why I'd be interested in the job.)

Crollo, you must have misunderstood the sentence or something. I know it's offering yourself up. That's what I said. That's what I meant to say. No argument there.

The whole post was aimed at the various people who were putting themselves out there as candidates, and then listing any number of reasons why they WOULDN'T be up for the task. It's curious behavior for someone that wants the position.

Thank you for not considering my non-application.
