Never seen a forum thread for what TWHLs favrite music from Europe is(if any, then agian, most of the people I talk to on here are not from america). I would say all of the world but lately americas musuic is shit.(Rap, Hip-hop, etc.) I listen to 1 or 2 american bands. ANYWAYS, on topic of this thread, I'll start off with my TWO faverite British bands, The Doors and Joy Division.(New Order just isnt the same without Ian Curtis.) Sorry is this sounds dumb, just curious what you guys liked.

While I'm not going to deny that American hip-hop artists like 50 Cent and Lil Wayne are nothing short of atrocious, there's still a lot of decent music coming out of the States - including rap and hip-hop. Check out artists like Jedi Mind Tricks, Sage Francis, Foo Fighters and B.O.B. for some good American music.

That said, the majority of artists I listen to are European, so I can get behind this thread.

Despite the fact I've somewhat outgrown metal, I still love In Flames from Sweden. One of the best live shows I've been to. Great tracks include Come Clarity, Satellites and Astronauts and My Sweet Shadow.

Some incredibly intelligent rap comes from underground London artist Akala. He's only just starting to get recognition here in the UK, and I hope he makes it big because the man is a complete genius. Seriously check this song out.

I'm sure I don't need to mention how awesome Daft Punk from France are, so I'll just finish with KT Tunstall. Very easy-listening, but just a brilliant song-writer and performer. Check out her British TV debut which made her big on Later with Jools - recording the elements of the song and looping them live.

Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. Both are from Britain, both are awesome.

Everything that comes out of Eurovision! That's an accurate representation of European music, right? Of course it is.

Oh well if we're counting Wales then I could go back to all the pop-metal style bands of my past. LostProphets, Bullet for my Valentine, Funeral for a Friend etc

Artic Monkeys, Sigur Ros, Radiohead, Muse, Keane, Mumford & Sons, You Me At Six, Zero 7. Bit of something for everyone there.

And surely you don't need to be told about the classics such as The Beatles and Queen...

Also some good Canadian bands (not European, but for some reason the USA and Europe are the only two places in the world?) such as Metric and Arcade Fire are worth a shot.

Then again, since when is Europe the only non-american place where music is made? I implore you to check out some good Australian bands, such as: Crowded House, Eskimo Joe, Gyroscope, Jet, Kisschasy, Little Red, Pete Murray, Powderfinger, The Butterfly Effect, The Temper Trap, Thirsty Merc and Van She. (in alphabetical order of course!)

Also still some great music coming out of the USA of course, if you can only find rap and hip hop you're looking in the wrong places.

too many bands come to mind to mention, but i would agree most of the music i listen to is not from the USA.. However if you're willing to look, you can find an abundance of any type of music you like in the US by just finding a Myspace Band you like, and then branch off their links to find more stuff like it. You could spend a lifetime doing this and never run out good things to listen to.

The only thing I listen to is British 'indie' stuff.

Arctic Monkeys, Dirty Pretty Things, Franz Ferdinand, The Libertines, Kaiser Chiefs, The Fratellis, The View, The Rifles, The Young Knives.

I also listen to a little British hip-hop, but mostly just Scroobius Pip.

On top of that I enjoy some of the swedes, being The Hives.

And if we're talking European, I guess Daft Punk counts as well. They're French.

Lacuna Coil - female fronted alternative rock band from Italy.

And don't you talk like that about USA, they have A LOT of awesome music and A LOT of crap just like European music scene.

Also, not all musicians from the U.S. are like 50cent. Stevie Wonder, BB King, Herbie Hancock... not going into this.

Jamiroquai, Zero7, the Brand New Heavies, Joss Stone, the James Taylor Quartet are the ones I can think of right now. And right now I'm going back to homework, so that's all I'll think about this for tonight.

Oh and of course, The Beatles and individual members - Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon... perhaps not Ringo, he hasn't had a great solo career and I haven't heard any of his solo material.

I didn't say ALL American Music was shit, just alot of the stuff I hear anymore sucks. Plus, I like older artists, like Frank Sinatra. That dude has some good music. I'm not into the new rap stuff.

Akala was great, I am in love with the fact he actually has a band, it's fantastic. I actually wrote a rhyme with insanity and humanity once, so that was a bit iffy to me, but the rest of it was great. Most rap doesn't usually capture my attention to lyrics like this does.

Good rap artists have so much rhythm, tonality and control in their voices that they effectively become an instrument themselves (see: akala, plan b, king blues, skrein, sage francis, jedi mind tricks) - complimenting the song rather than just using it as a beat to brown-nose themselves (see: 50 cent, Kanye West)
You've got an incredibly obtuse view of music, one I shared when I was around 14 so I'm guessing that's roughly your age (coincidentally the sort of age where I listened to bands like Arch Enemy). Don't worry, you'll mature out of it. Don't judge an artist/song just because it's a particular genre. I listen to everything, from heavy metal to drum n' bass, dubstep to rap. Classic rock, punk, world music, indie rock, soul from all over the world. Good music can be found everywhere, and you've clearly got yourself stuck in one corner.

Akala isn't all that original. There are a lot of Hip-Hop crews with actual bands behind them and even though his lyrics were well meant he did fell for clichés. I'd say there is a lot of great Hip-Hop music, which is even to be found in the more commercial areas of that genre - be it American or European. Furthermore, Huntey, you mentioned B.O.B. as a good artist, but you don't like Kanye West? Obviously that's personal opinion, but could you explain why? I'm curious about that.

B.O.B. Has an awful lot of shit as well, but some of his songs are closer to Seal than anything else. Very melodic, very calming.

That's a bit harsh, don't you think? It seems like your mixing his arrogant personality in the media with the actual music he made. It's much like B.O.B. in my honest opinion: he made a lot of shit, but there are some songs with a lot of soul to it. I'm not an avid fan of Kanye West, let that be made clear, but he has made some great songs with a lot of warmth and feel to them. This for example. Furthermore, he does provoke thought - agreeing with those thoughts is second. B.O.B. is a bit too poppy for me and his lyrical content is anything but original. But then again.. I suppose this is personal preference and I wrote way too much on this already. Haha.

I think you've been jaded and don't really know how to judge rap.
First of all, "rap" is more poetry than it is music, and you need to really think about what that means for a second. Now I like more melodic hip-hop myself, but at the same time the fundamental point of rapping isn't to be melodic.
Secondly, you dismissing the lyrics because they could be swapped with "ama gangsta" means you're not looking at rapping the right way. Period. With all due respect, but I find this perspective hard to take serious. Obviously lyrics are very important to rap, but they should not be decontextualized from the music. Much of the strenght of rap is in the expression: the way a rapper uses his voice and seeks to add layer to the production.
