Interesting challenge, I must say. If vrad.exe decides to work well I'll participate.

Of course, I think the goal of this challenge is actually Rimrook proving to himself that nobody can exceed his imagination :D.

when is deadline for the competition?
Posted 12 years ago2011-05-02 11:41:07 UTC Post #294146
When everyone is done in a month or so.

CStriker, I know. I like pools. I work in the pool industry. There's water or a pool in 90% of my maps. Really?

I should add that with the current forum activity you may as well extend the deadline to a year :D

challenge yourselves to make a better map than fy_pool_day, guys, it's got a outdoor pool area and separate locker rooms for both sides. Well maybe not since suggested restrictions to the pool area. In that case, remember that swimming pool from Decay?

Say, is this going to be combined into a mod a la cubicles? If so I hope everyone has gameplay in the maps. If needed, I can provide floating scientist or barney corpses for ambience. Hey, in fact I have some ichysaur model replacements, imagine you jump in the pool, and come a barney gnawing on ya. Ha!

Well anyway cheers to mapping challenges.

I work in the pool industry.
So that's what this is about... you were tasked with designing new and innovative pools for the business and you're covertly relaying that onto us, hoping to avoid doing the major work.

What do I get for figuring it out?

I work in the pool industry.
My brother did that for a few summers, and now he doesn't like pools because he knows what chemicals go into them.
I might participate. If I can think of a unique feature.

Is this about scenery/eyecandy or about actual gameplay?

Ok addressing things:
Nice one, Rim, im in.
Awesome.
Say, is this going to be combined into a mod a la cubicles?
Yes for now, but I don't have any hosting right now so probably no.
you were tasked with designing new and innovative pools for the business and you're covertly relaying that onto us, hoping to avoid doing the major work.
I work in retail.
he doesn't like pools because he knows what chemicals go into them.
I sell those chemicals.
Is this about scenery/eyecandy or about actual gameplay?
Eyecandy. Gameplay could be added but not necessary. Might lift the player restrictions if by popular demand people want game play.

This was one of my suggestions for the last compo. I'm in. Got a few projects i'm beginning on though so this one might not get a lot of attention. May make a spongebob map for hl/cs and I have a fewe architecture exercises in mind for the summer.

My recent architecture project for school incorporated water and my teacher wouldn't allow many of my ideas so it will be nice with out many limitations.

I am aquarius, you are warned! :crowbar:

i will add a boat with ladder
i will add a boat with hand railings

I'm in on this, but I agree with defuse, we truly need a ladder?
Posted 12 years ago2011-05-05 04:45:15 UTC Post #294205
Uh, what if there's multiple areas of the pool/ other features to it. I don't think there should be any limiting rules besides its a manmade pool.

Zeeba-G is an architect, what do you expect.
Also, did you include your foot intentionally? Its presence in the image makes it a bit hilarious :D.

Lol thanks, no but I did notice it. I've layed out the map in hammer for scale just have to get chipping away at it for the next month or so! Thats a sexy ladder thanks i'll check it out.

I would just simply roll on the floor if there is a giant turtle in the outside scenery of Zeebro's map.

@Zeeba- I see nice shapes but I'm unable to tell what part is pool and what part is not. Please set the texture value in your blue water to > 64.

I'm seeing some tiny progress in the overly complex pool. Any one else doing one?

I really don't have time for mapping these days. Otherwise, I would DEFINITELY join.

No time for mapping either. I have had some mapping inspiration go to waste in the past few days, I have way too much to do. And I don't foresee any useable holidays in the near future.

Lots of progress but SO much to DO ugh!

Edit: I am definitely flexing my mapping muscles in this one. Two days straight of work "new screen not taken". I really need to find a more terrain friendly engine.

Might have to join in on this one too. :D

I've tried making a decent pool a couple of times.

Thanks. The colors are pretty. Had to all be triangles to curve with the bottom.

Is anyone else highly participating or am I the only sock in the drewer? Because i'm like a glow in the dark tube sock!

Edit: ugh no responses... Rim are you still in? Your legit competition especially when it comes to pools! Please enter!

Edit 2: Second day, no resp, is this thread dead? lol.

WOW Zeeba-g! That concept art looks awesome!

Sorry, I've been considering entering but don't want to say I am until I've committed to actually building a pool.
Posted 12 years ago2011-05-15 21:34:11 UTC Post #294667
Well, I know the rules say constrict the player to the pool area... So I decided to make my whole map the pool area. =P Half man-made and half natural!

Sweet this isn't dead. Looks cool crazy, reminds me of mine in some ways as you will see...
Posted 12 years ago2011-05-16 02:34:39 UTC Post #294672
Crazy: that looks neat reminds me of Splash Mountain, a ride at an amusement park near my house. =)

I tried many time to make a water slide in goldsrc, but failed, learning you'll "bump-bump-bump" down the chute unless you're "surfing". Is this much easier to make happen in source?

Just lost hours of work but re did it in less than an hour. Now its 6 am, yes time to sleep...
Posted 12 years ago2011-05-16 19:34:43 UTC Post #294693
Cap'n Terror: Thanks, and yes, I do believe it is much easier to make a water slide in source due to one great console command, "sv_friction". By default it is at 4, so if you put it at something like 0.1 you will be sliding all around uncontrollably, ha.

So all those triggers you see on my slide simply toggle the friction way low, and then toggle it back to default. I use that with an ice texture on the slide and a couple trigger_push's, as well as a trigger to force you to crouch, and you'll be sliding away in no time! =]

And thanks Zeeba-G. As usual, I will be very excited to see your map completed!

Pfft, ladders are for noobs, you should use trained gravity gun using monkeys for the job.
