I would show my work, but for some reason all my textures are acting up, being "stretched too small."

FINAL

After about 7 hours, I'm finally finished. Painting your minuscule geometry was a pain in the ass, btw. Another major pain was making 45 textures, almost all of them manually edited. There are 3 animated textures, though I haven't used one of them.
It was fun though, but I had to tweak a bit the texlights at the final compile. I even beveled the exterior and if I left some piece of geometry un-textured, please excuse me.

This map is for GOLDSOURCE

I may or may not take part in this.
And by that, I mean I'd really like to, but I probably won't get of my ass to start it :C
Downloading the base map now.

Edit: I think I have an idea that might just get me banned. Let's do it.

(I can upload psds also)

Any tips would be very appreciated!

This is the first time i've really sat down and tried to use ps to make textures, and tho i think i will be able to get good at it, i also feel it's going to take me a long time...

Thanks again to archie for forcing me to get my feet wet it texture making ;)

Here are a couple of WIP screens. I haven't done much with the lighting or cubemaps yet so it may look pretty different when complete.

Mapping/modding wise, i feel this is the most challenging thing i've ever tried so far. I'm finding it very difficult to make anything realistic, so it's time to hit some tutorials i guess :)

FINAL

Here is my final version. Anyone may use the textures in the zip file for anything they might be working on. Please just credit me in the final work. There is a playable BSP file that will work in Episode 2. Let me know if you have any trouble loading it up. Two sheets of textures that I created are below the screen shots. Thanks Archie for hosting this competition!

Instant's texturing tutorial

Step 1. Make a shape in photoshop
Step 2. Add a tonne of filters to it
Step 3. Add a white layer with some small noise, make multiply
Step 4. Shove so many filters on it that it looks nothing like the original

Personally I believe that textures and brushwork go hand in hand so as the brushwork is not of my own doing or preferable art style, I'm finding it pretty much impossible to make textures for it, hence why I am not entering the competition.

edit
Oh what the hells, I'll post what I've got so far on Imgur. Not so thought through but I was aiming for some industrial feel. Some I made by hand but most of em are from close up photos on various things on the island I'm working on.

Been using mainly Picasa and Gimp2.

OK, since you keep going on about it I'll just tell you that Urby won. The video will come at some point but the basic reason is none of you actually really made textures to fit the architecture which is what the competition was all about.

There were tiling textures, yes, but I wanted to see textures specifically designed for specific brushwork.

Naticus had the most unique theme, but aside from the glass the texture set just didn't fit the environment at all. His WIP lighting was also a lot better than the final.

Striker's entry was good, but was let down in a couple of areas. The tile texture didn't align to any of the brushwork edges, the slate wall texture in the windowed room could do with tiling better, but what really killed it for me was the crate texture. Crates are an important element of classic HL maps and this texture really didn't sell it to me. The metal trim texture you used on your glass borders is also really oddly bright and contrasty. Nice concrete though.

Urby's might seem a little plain, but it has a very consistent visual theme that it sticks to. The crates are a highlight and your tiles align fairly well for the most part. Could definitely do with better trims, though, as your floor edges in particular are very plain.

To be honest, I'm not hugely happy with Urby winning this - I don't think any of you completed the competition to the brief - "making textures to fit a specific purpose" - but his entry wins on the basis of consistent visuals which is very important.

Well, quite a dull ending to a time consuming competition. Perhaps it was the amount of work it takes to make those textures that scared a lot of people. Frankly, if I wasn't bored I wouldn't have participated either.

I sensed from the start that Urby would win. I agree that my textures don't quite fit a theme. I know you value cleanliness in design. You can definitely see my messy style in my maps, but I'm trying to improve. In any case, it was a good exercise.

Now, what game(s) will Urby choose?

I'm sorry you were so disappointed by the entries but I think you were a little vauge in the original instructions when you wrote "making textures to fit a specific purpose".

I think we all included textures that fit the appropriate structure inlcuding lights, doors, floor, wall, crates and glass in the right places.

If the whole point of this was to design textures that architectually moved with and were created for each specific brush than you should have indicated that and I would not have wasted my time.

My entry had a futuristic theme and I attempted to demonstrate my ability to create different types of textures including, animated, translucent, environment mapped and bump mapped. From your review, except for the glass, it appears that I got zero credit for any of the texture creation techniques I used.

If the "specific purpose" was making goldsource textures for the Core then you should have explicitly said so.
Posted 11 years ago2012-08-21 14:27:23 UTC Post #309214
That's hardly fair.

I'm sorry you feel hard-done-by. You didn't win regardless of whether or not the textures fit the architecture well, since to be honest none of the entries fit the architecture particularly well.

Basic things like trims and alignment were lacking in your entry, though and although all your textures were good individually, together they just create a very messy theme.

It's nothing to do with your entry being for Source - I much prefer Source, I just don't think you did a particularly great job texturing the area. It's not fair saying I was too vague - this was a texturing contest, you should have made them as good as they could be, and that means making sure they fit the brushwork. Otherwise, I would just have asked for texture sheets rather than for people to texture the map.

It's clear that you were disappointed by the lack of entries as well as the quality of those that did enter. Out of respect for those that do enter the competitions you host please at least do a better job at posting the results in a timely manner and you could put more of a positive spin on the results for those that did spend time on the competition.

I can only speak for myself and I just feel a little empty after this exercise. I don't really care that I didn't win but just feel that you are dismissing the entries without any care of the time that was put forth.
Posted 11 years ago2012-08-21 14:41:43 UTC Post #309216
Naticus seems to have exposed the less polite version of my response :).

Well, let's all be fairplay and say that everyone's dissapointed. Let's consider it a reminder for better hosted competitions in the future. I agree with Naticus, although staying optimistic, it was not fully wasted time. I flexed my texturing muscle, and anyway, enjoyed time is not wasted time.
And in the end, Archie has a life...

I find his quote from the Big Brother thread funny(slightly modified):
Why bother subscribingmapping? I'm never going to update this seriesthread again, it's so shit. I hate working on it and you probably hate watching itwaiting, so why bother? I'm sick of it.
Also, in future competitions hosted by Archie, Urby should not participate, instead he should be a judge.

I wasn't meaning to be dismissive!
I really love the glass designs, and it's very different from anything I envisioned when I slapped together the brushwork. Nice entry!
The rundown was so brief because I was running out the door, and I'm still pissed that the video I recorded wouldn't save, because I gave each map a proper rundown in that.

Striker, that quote from the BB thread was a joke for the people on the front page, and it's been something I've added to every episode release thusfar.
As for Urby not being allowed to participate, I hardly see why or how that's fair.

That's too bad about the video. I was looking forward to that after seeing how good your other video reviews were. Sometimes technology fails us and there is nothing we can do.

Sorry I came back so harsh. I know that it took your time too to set up and moderate the competition and you have a lot going on.

Hopefully there will be more participants and involvment in the next competition.
