What resolutions can you make the artwork/source files for the splash screen in goldsource? Can it be a higher res than 800x600?

Depends which version of Goldsource you're talking about. Steam backgrounds can go up to 1280 x 1024, possibly higher.

With WON I never tried anything higher than 1024x768.

Steam HL (and "non-Steam" versions) allows very high resolution backgrounds, but you need to split your image into lots of small pieces and edit the two files relating to backgrounds in the "resources" folder.

This would be for a steam HL1 mod. Sounds like as long as I split it up properly and set the files up correctly I can use a higher res source image. Thanks

Yes I've made them for Steam at 1920x1200 and 1920x1080.

Make sure you use the CS1.6 Background Maker. Save yourself the headache of doing it all manually.
