Can HL1 do big open terrain maps like the Coast levels from HL2, or at least Unreal-style maps like Nyleve's Fall?

Also, what are some of the custom maps that have huge outdoor areas? I only know of Badlands from TFC (but it's an official map).

GoldSrc has a lot of trouble with huge open terrain maps even if you optimise to the max.

While it is actually possible (also with expanding the grid size to 13000x13000 units), the end result would be horrible, and the map would also be hard to work with, unless you have a good PC with a GPU equivalent to a GTX 480, but the engine would still struggle. +compile times.

If you want some open maps, Source is OK up to a point, while CryEngine (even CE1) seems the best one for the task.

To answer the second question, I'm not sure. But, there's a map of mine, "de_crater" or "dm_crater". And, I'm soon going to add open world maps into my Half-Life mod, "An unknown game".

well hl2 map length is 32k units, hl1 is 8k, if im not wrong and ofc the limits are tighter. Visually it might be possible to make large terrains, up to 32k, using large scale textures or models. Check out HLDM maps like eden or karnak

There are hacks such as big maps toolkit from VulzaCN, but it is highly experimental to map beyond original limits, allthough it should be safe to use the area beyond +/-8k as visuals only where player and entities do not exist.

+/-8k works with player and entities. Beyond gave me problems.
