I just discovered a tool called "Wall Worm" for creating Source / Goldsrc maps entirely in 3DSmax, which apparently was used to create the Xen chapters in Black Mesa. That sounds really exciting to me, but I was wondering if anyone here has used it and recommends it over Hammer? Is it worth spending the time learning to use, particularly for Goldsrc?

I haven't tried it, but it certainly sounds very interesting, especially for natural environments. It's a modern tool, useful for a lot more than just level-design, and it's also extensible.

On the other hand, 3ds Max isn't exactly cheap... If something like this was available for Blender then I would certainly give it a try, but 3ds Max just isn't worth it for me.

I used it all the time (for goldsource) before the big updates to Blender 3-4(?) years ago. There's a thread somewhere here on TWHL by the developer and they had plenty of video tutorials on their site to get you started. Iirc, back then when i still had a max license, most known level designers in the CS GO community were using it in one way or another.
